How to Choose a Fishing Rod

Rods are built around the discipline they suit, so the type matters more than any single number. Carp rods, feeder rods, match rods, pike and lure rods, and sea rods all handle different fish, weights and casting distances.

Carp and specimen rods carry a test curve, usually between 2.75lb and 3.5lb, which describes the power in the blank. A higher test curve casts heavier leads and pulls bigger fish from cover, while a softer one protects light hooklengths at closer range.

Feeder and match rods are rated by casting weight rather than test curve, and length sets how far they reach. Longer rods of twelve to fourteen feet suit big rivers and stillwaters, and shorter rods give more control on small venues.

Pike, lure and sea rods are matched to the lure or rig weight they cast, often shown as a casting range in grams or ounces. The action, whether tip, mid or through, decides how the rod loads and how it plays a fish once hooked.

The rod also needs to balance the rest of the setup, so reel size, line strength and the line guides all factor in. A rod handling heavier line and bigger reels suits distance and power, while a lighter rod pairs with smaller reels for finesse.

The number of sections and the transport length matter for travel and storage, and a multi-piece or telescopic rod packs down smaller. The guide linked below explains the options in more detail.
