Wychwood Agitator CR-S Catfish 12ft 4.5lb Review

Twelve feet of high-modulus carbon and a 4.5lb test curve make the Wychwood Agitator CR-S Catfish the longest rod in the Agitator CR range. It's aimed squarely at anglers who fish bigger, more open waters for catfish and want extra length and power to keep a hard-fighting fish under control at range.

Its core construction matches the 11ft Agitator CR-C, so you get the same powerful through action, double-leg SiC guides, fibreglass-reinforced DBS reel seat and EVA fighting butt. What changes is the length and the extra half-pound of test curve. So, is bigger always better?

Not in every swim, and that's why its handling score sits a touch lower than its other ratings.

Build quality 8.5/10
Power & Action 8.5/10
Handling 8.0/10
Value for money 8.5/10

How well is it built?

The CR-S is built on a high-modulus carbon fibre blank, which keeps a 12ft, 4.5lb rod as light and responsive as a rod of this power can reasonably be.

That matters more on a long rod, because any extra weight towards the tip is magnified when you're holding it through a long fight.

Double-leg SiC guides are a must on a catfish rod, in my view. Two legs spread the load on each guide when the blank is fully bent, and SiC inserts are smooth and hard enough to cope with braid, which is the standard mainline for most cat anglers.

They're impact resistant and anti-tangle too, so they should shrug off the odd knock on the bank.

Below the reel there's an EVA fighting butt, and the seat itself is a fibreglass-reinforced DBS, which rounds off a sturdy, no-nonsense build. It's a working rod rather than a showpiece, but for a mid-priced rod I think it's very well put together.

Power & Action

A 4.5lb test curve is serious power, and on a 12ft blank it gives you real leverage to turn a big cat away from snags or weed beds.

That's the main reason to choose the CR-S over the 4lb CR-C, as it should let you pile on more pressure when a fish is heading somewhere you don't want it to go.

The powerful through action keeps all that power usable. Rather than a stiff tip and a poker-like butt, the blank should bend progressively under load, soaking up the head shakes and sudden lunges catfish are known for.

With braid on the reel, that cushioning is what helps keep the hook in place.

For me, the length and test curve together make this the Agitator for big waters where you need to stop fish at distance. It's a lot of rod, but it's controlled power rather than brute stiffness, and I think it earns its 8.5.

Handling

Handling is where the CR-S drops half a point, and it's down to length rather than any flaw in the build. A 12ft rod is more of a lever to hold, and in a tight river swim or under overhanging trees it can be awkward to play a fish close in or to net one on your own.

On a big open pit or reservoir, though, that extra foot pays off. It gives you more line pick-up at range, a better angle over marginal weed and more control when a fish kites along the bank.

The EVA fighting butt helps too, as you can brace the rod against your body when a cat refuses to give up.

Is it the right rod for every swim? No, and I'd point anglers on tighter venues towards the 11ft CR-C instead. Where there's room to use it, it handles well for a rod with this much power, so 8.0 feels fair.

Is it good value for money?

Is it good value? I think it is. You're getting a high-modulus carbon blank, braid-friendly SiC guides and a reinforced reel seat on a mid-priced specialist catfish rod, and none of those are places you want corners cut when a big cat is on.

Next to the Catfish Pro Top Cat Rod 12ft 4.5lb it's the same length and test curve, but the Top Cat adds a super-tough Fuji tip ring and a Duplon butt from a dedicated catfish brand, so it's worth a look if those details matter to you.

The Skeater Unlimited Catfish range is worth considering too, as it comes in 10ft, 11ft and 12ft lengths with a choice of handles.

Overall, I'd recommend the CR-S to catfish anglers who fish big pits, reservoirs and wide rivers, where a 12ft, 4.5lb rod gives them the reach and power to stay in control.

Pros

  • Long 12ft blank gives extra reach and line pick-up
  • 4.5lb test curve gives the power to turn big cats
  • Powerful through action helps cushion lunges on braid
  • Double-leg SiC guides are braid-friendly, tough and anti-tangle
  • Fibreglass-reinforced DBS reel seat and EVA fighting butt

Cons

  • A 12ft rod is awkward in tight swims and under trees
  • More power than you need for smaller cats on modest club waters

Features and Specifications

Feature What this means
Length: 12ft This is the longest model in the Agitator CR range, giving you extra leverage when playing heavy fish and helping you keep the line clear of snags and debris during a fight.
Test Curve: 4.5lb A 4.5lb test curve means this rod is built for serious, powerful fish. It has the backbone to handle big catfish without feeling overpowered, and allows you to apply real pressure when needed.
Blank: High Modulus Carbon Fibre High modulus carbon fibre is a stiffer, more responsive grade of carbon, which helps keep the blank strong and powerful without unnecessary bulk or weight in the hand.
Blank Action: Powerful Through Action A through action means the rod bends progressively from tip to butt under load. For catfish, this helps absorb the sudden lunges of a big fish and keeps hooks pinned throughout a long, hard fight.
Sections: 2-Piece Breaking down into two sections makes the rod much more practical to transport, particularly for travel to European catfish venues, while keeping the blank integrity of a full-length rod.
Guides: Double-Leg SiC, Anti-Tangle SiC (Silicon Carbide) rings are hard-wearing and low-friction, making them suitable for use with braid as well as mono. The double-leg frames add strength and impact resistance, and the anti-tangle design and optimised spacing help the line run freely under pressure.
Reel Seat: Fibreglass-Reinforced DBS The DBS reel seat is reinforced with fibreglass for extra toughness, and is sized to accommodate large big pit reels. This means you can mount a heavy-duty reel confidently without the seat flexing or cracking under the strain of fighting a big catfish.
Handle: Custom fore grip A custom fore grip gives a firm hold on the rod during a long fight, and the EVA fighting butt sits comfortably against the body when a big catfish is pulling hard.
Fore Grip: Custom Design A dedicated fore grip above the reel seat gives you a secure second hand position when casting or applying maximum pressure on a running fish, which is important when dealing with the power of large catfish.
Fighting Butt: EVA The EVA fighting butt extends below the reel seat so you can brace the rod against your body during a prolonged fight. EVA is a firm, durable foam that holds up well even when pressed against clothing, waders, or a rod belt.

Frequently Asked Questions

What test curve does the Wychwood Agitator CR-S Catfish have?

4.5lb test curve. This gives the rod the backbone to handle big catfish and apply serious pressure during a fight, while the through action absorbs sudden lunges and keeps hooks pinned throughout a long, hard scrap.

What does CR-S mean on the Wychwood Agitator Catfish rod?

CR-S denotes the cork-handled variant in the Agitator CR range. Wychwood offers the same blank in three handle configurations: CR-S (cork), CR-D (duplon), and CR-C (composite). The cork version provides a traditional, tactile grip that warms quickly in the hand and gives good feedback during a fight.

Is the Wychwood Agitator CR-S suitable for catfish fishing?

Yes, it is purpose-built for catfish. The 4.5lb test curve and powerful through action are designed specifically for the sustained pressure and sudden lunges of big cats. The fibreglass-reinforced reel seat accommodates large big pit reels, and the EVA fighting butt lets you brace the rod against your body during prolonged fights.

What reel pairs well with the Wychwood Agitator CR-S Catfish 12ft 4.5lb?

A large big pit reel in the 6000-10000 size range loaded with 30-50lb braid or 15-20lb mono. The fibreglass-reinforced DBS reel seat is sized to accommodate heavy-duty reels, and the 4.5lb test curve suits the power output of big pit models commonly used for catfish work on rivers and pits.

How many sections does the Wychwood Agitator CR-S Catfish break down into?

Two sections. This makes the rod practical to transport, particularly for travel to European catfish venues, while maintaining the blank integrity and casting performance of a full-length 12ft rod.
