What is the handle like?

The first thing I noticed when picking up the Ultegra Surf was the Shimano Cast Control Grip. It’s ergonomically shaped, giving you proper traction and stability when loading up to cast, especially useful when your hands are wet or sandy.

The shaping helps lock your bottom hand in place, which really adds confidence during high-effort pendulum or overhead casts. The handle length is spot-on for modern surfcasting technique, letting you brace easily with your hip or belt while generating a full-body cast.

How secure is the reel seat?

Shimano have fitted the Ultegra Surf with a Fuji DPS reel seat, and it’s exactly what you'd hope for on a rod at this level. It accommodates the largest surf reels with ease. I tested mine with a Shimano Ultegra CI4+ 14000, and there wasn’t a hint of wobble.

The position is just right for distance casting too, low enough to get leverage with the bottom hand, but not so low it’s uncomfortable on retrieve.

Once clamped down, it’s solid as a rock and doesn’t creep even under repeated compression.

What are the guides like?

Fitted with Fuji Lowrider guides, the Ultegra Surf keeps everything smooth and slick on the cast. These guides are braid-safe, so whether you’re using low-diameter mono or a full shock leader and braid setup, there’s no danger of damage.

I had zero issues with frap or line slap, even casting into a slight onshore wind.

The layout helps control line flow beautifully, and it’s nice to see Shimano haven’t skimped on guide quality at this price.

How does the blank perform?

This is where the rod really stands apart. The blank is built using a combination of High Modulus Full Carbon, HPC (High Pressure Carbon), Nanosheet, and Diaflash technology, some of Shimano’s top-tier innovations. The result?

A super-fast action that snaps back into position with barely any tip lag. I could really feel the blank load and release cleanly, without that dreaded “twist and wobble” you sometimes get on cheaper long rods.

It’s powerful yet refined, built for anglers who want to maximise casting distance with technique, not brute force. The tubular tip version I tested gave me confidence with heavier rigs and larger baits.

There’s plenty of power through the butt and mid-section, and that tip doesn’t collapse when you hit it hard.

How does it cast and feel?

Casting is one of Ultragra's true strengths. The extra fast taper really lets you hit those long, flat trajectories, and the tubular tip doesn’t collapse under pressure.

I was using 150g plus bait and consistently hitting around the 200-yard mark on a flat beach with no wind assistance. You can really feel the blank snap back into position, there's no lag, which is exactly what you want from a long-range casting tool.

How does it play fish?

Despite the stiffness and power, the rod still has feel when there’s a fish on. I wouldn’t call it soft by any means, but with the hybrid tip version in particular, there’s a good level of bite registration and enough give in the top section to absorb hard runs.

I wouldn’t call it a finesse rod, but it doesn’t behave like a broom handle either.

Is it good value for money?

This isn’t a budget surf rod, but for the materials, casting performance, and fittings, you’re getting a serious piece of kit for under £300. If you’re an improving or advanced caster, you’ll be getting your money’s worth.

Beginners might not access all the performance, but it’s a future-proof investment.
