How to Choose a Pike Rod

Pike rods split broadly into two camps, and the fishing style decides which one fits. Deadbait and bait-fishing rods are built to cast heavier baits and leads and to handle a powerful fish at close range, while lure rods are lighter and quicker for working artificials over a session.

Test curve is the main number to read on a pike rod. A rod around 2.75lb to 3.25lb covers most still-water and river deadbait work, and a higher test curve helps when bigger baits or longer casts come into play.

Length affects both casting distance and control. Rods of 10ft to 11ft suit tighter swims and boat work, while 12ft blanks gain range on open water and lift more line off the surface when playing a fish.

Lure rods are rated by casting weight rather than test curve, so the figure to match is the gramme range of the lures being used. A rod that loads correctly with the chosen lures casts more accurately and stays comfortable across a long day of casting and retrieving.

The rod also needs to sit alongside the rest of the setup. A reel sized to hold enough strong line, a wire trace and a balanced bait or lure all matter, and the blank should suit the line and weights being used.
