Carp Throwing Sticks

A good throwing stick puts boilies on the spot at range without a spod or a boat. Carbon and plastic throwing sticks are listed here with the lowest in-stock price from reputable online tackle shops, so you can see which shop is cheapest before you buy.

Each listing shows how many reputable online tackle shops stock the stick, and the price shown is the cheapest of those in-stock offers. Reviewed products also carry an eTackle score.

Sticks are sized by the bore, from around 18mm up to 29mm, so match the stick to the boilies you use.

Bore Size

The bore is the inside width of the tube. A 20mm stick suits 15mm to 18mm boilies, while 24mm to 29mm sticks take 20mm baits and bigger.

Too tight a bore crushes soft baits, and too wide a bore makes the bait rattle out early.

Carbon or Plastic

Carbon sticks are light and stiff, so they throw further for the same effort. Plastic sticks cost far less and suit short range baiting or a first stick.

Longer sticks add range but take a little more practice to throw well.

Getting the Range

Most anglers reach 80 to 120 metres with a carbon stick once the action is right, and a short range stick covers the margins and mid range.

For bigger beds of bait at range, our best spod rods guide compares the other way to do it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size throwing stick do I need?

Match the bore to your boilies. A 20mm stick is right for most 15mm to 18mm baits, and a 24mm or bigger stick suits 20mm baits.

Is a carbon throwing stick worth it?

If you bait at range often, yes, because carbon is lighter and stiffer and throws further. A plastic stick is fine for close work.

How far can you throw boilies with a stick?

With practice most anglers reach 80 to 120 metres with a carbon stick. Range depends on the stick, the bait and your action.

Do boilies need to be hard for a throwing stick?

Firm, round baits work best, as soft or misshapen boilies can split or jam in the tube. Air dried baits throw cleanly.

Can I throw pellets with a throwing stick?

Throwing sticks are made for single boilies. For pellets, particles and groundbait use a spod, a baiting spoon or a catapult.
