How well is it built?

Drennan have been building float rods under various range names for decades, and the Vertex MK2 is the current generation replacement for the original Vertex that itself replaced the long-running Series 7.

The MK2 brings updated blank construction and refreshed cosmetics to the same mid-tier float-rod niche.

The 13ft variant is the all-rounder of the MK2 Float range. 3-piece construction, 3.96m extended length, tuned for floats up to 10g-plus with optimum reel lines between 3lb and 6lb paired with lighter hooklengths underneath.

The blank is built on updated high-modulus carbon. Drennan have not published specific carbon grade spec, but the MK2 blank feels a touch slimmer than the original Vertex, with tip recovery that is noticeably quicker.

For repeat-cast waggler work at mid-range, that recovery speed matters.

Guide hardware follows the standard Drennan Vertex treatment. SiC ceramic ring inserts for smooth line flow, standard Vertex frames running the length of the blank. Not flagship Fuji territory, but sensibly-specced for the price tier.

The cork handle paired with EVA casting grip is a Drennan signature. Premium cork for warmth and feel in cold weather, EVA in the wear zone. Vertex-branded engraving on the butt section adds a proper finished feel.

How well does it cast and feel?

The Vertex range now covers shorter Carp Waggler variants (10ft, 11ft) for tight commercial work and the longer MK2 Float variants (13ft, 14ft) for broader float applications. The 13ft MK2 sits in the all-rounder slot.

On the cast, the 13ft MK2 delivers the reach needed for general stillwater waggler work at 20-30 metres. Wagglers up to 10g load comfortably, with the cushion strike tip absorbing the load rather than punching through.

The updated blank has noticeably better tip recovery than the original MK1 Vertex. After the cast release, the tip stops hunting quickly, which keeps repeat casts landing in the same spot for disciplined feeding.

The SiC ceramic guides contribute consistent line flow across the 3-piece blank. Guide spacing is optimised for the longer blank, avoiding friction spots that cheaper rods introduce.

Balance across the 13ft length is the real standout. The cork-EVA handle combination keeps the centre of gravity back toward the reel rather than out at the tip, so the rod sits neutral over long all-day float sessions.

13ft is the natural pick for commercial match fishing, general stillwater waggler and light stick float work on slower rivers. For longer-range work the 14ft MK2 is the better pick; for tight commercial pegs the 10ft or 11ft Carp Waggler variants.

How does it perform when playing fish?

There is no point owning a 13ft float rod that cannot cushion a bonus fish. The Vertex MK2 13ft delivers on this job with a progressive action that loads properly through the mid-section on a running fish.

On commercial carp and F1s up to around 8lb, the 13ft MK2 cushions strikes cleanly on 0.14-0.16mm hooklengths without pulling the hook. The cushion strike tip is the key design feature, absorbing the initial strike load before transmitting through to the hooklength.

The 3-6lb line window is the practical operating range. 3lb mainline for silvers and light commercial work, 6lb for bigger commercial carp with lighter hooklengths underneath.

Above 6lb mainline the rod starts feeling under-gunned for anything bigger than mid-sized commercial carp.

For natural-water float work the Vertex MK2 13ft is genuinely capable. Roach, bream, skimmers and bonus chub or tench come to the net without drama. The progressive action protects fine hooklengths in the same way it does on commercials, just applied to different species.

What the rod is not built for is specimen float work at distance or big river work where a 17ft Acolyte or similar is the right tool. The Vertex MK2 13ft is an all-rounder float rod, not a specialist specimen tool.

Is it good value for money?

What the Vertex MK2 delivers at this price is genuine Drennan build quality. Updated blank construction over the MK1, SiC guide train, cork-EVA handle, and the brand's decades of float-rod design experience behind the tuning.

The mid-range bracket is a strong one for float anglers. The Guru N-Gauge Pro Float has ZERO40 carbon and Sea-Guide Anti-Tangle frames. The Shimano Aero X5 Match has HPC XT60 carbon and long-frame guides. The Drennan Vertex MK2 has SiC guides and Drennan tuning heritage.

All three are peer-tier picks, and the right choice depends more on brand preference and handle configuration than raw spec differences.

Compared down to the Red Range Float Fish Rods at lower price, the Vertex MK2 is a clear step up in both blank quality and guide spec. For anglers who have outgrown entry-level Drennan kit, the Vertex MK2 is the natural upgrade.
