About Zig & Floater Line

Zig and floater line is fine, low visibility monofilament made for rigs that present a bait in mid water or on the surface rather than on the bottom.

Buyers are mostly carp anglers fishing zigs through the warmer months on deep pits and estate lakes, or casting controllers and floaters at fish cruising in the upper layers. Hooklink lines here run from 7lb to 15lb at 0.22mm to 0.30mm, with floater main lines up to 0.33mm.

Buoyancy is the choice that counts, because it decides whether the bait sits naturally in the water. Pick a neutral or semi buoyant link for zigs, and a true floating main line for surface fishing.

How to Choose Zig and Floater Line

Most lines here are hooklink materials on 100m spools, tied as long links for zigs or short links for surface rigs. A couple are dedicated floater main lines on 250m spools, made to stay on top and cast light controller floats.

Neutral buoyancy line hangs naturally in the water, so a zig hookbait holds the depth you set with little pull from the link. Semi buoyant and floating lines suit surface rigs, where the line needs to stay up with the bait.

Zig links here come in 7lb to 15lb, and the finest is 0.22mm. A thinner link is harder for carp to see, but it leaves less margin near weed or snags.

Floater main lines run from 10lb to 15lb at 0.28mm to 0.33mm. Step up the strain where fish bolt for lilies or overhanging trees.

A common starting point is a hooklink about half the depth of the swim, then moving the bait up or down a foot at a time until you find fish. Liners with no takes often mean fish are deeper than the bait, so shorten the link.

Some stretch in a zig or floater line acts as a cushion and helps keep small hooks in place during a long fight. Low stretch floater lines give a faster pick up on the strike at range.

Zig and floater hooks use a finer wire so a buoyant bait is not dragged down, and come in sizes 6, 8 and 10. Tungsten zig sleeves slide over the swivel and stand a long link away from the main line to stop tangles.

Clear and translucent lines are the most common, alongside trans khaki, green tints and two tone camo. A low reflection finish helps in bright sun when fish are close to the surface.

Fine copolymer and mono lines knot well when tied with care, and a five turn grinner or palomar is a common choice. Wet the knot and draw it down slowly to keep its full strength.

Zig and Floater Line Budgets and Ratings

Leaving out the hooks and zig sleeves, the dearest line here costs about five times the entry spool across reputable online tackle shops. The top end is a 250m main line, so per metre the gap is smaller than it looks.

Paying more mostly buys a dedicated floating main line, a finer diameter for the strain or a level wound spool. Hooklink spools cost little enough to carry two strains on every trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

What line is used for zig rigs?

Use a clear, fine mono or copolymer of around 7lb to 12lb with neutral buoyancy. Stronger 15lb links suit weedy waters or bigger fish.

Does zig line float?

Most zig line is neutral or semi buoyant, so it neither floats hard nor sinks fast. That lets the hookbait hold the depth you set.

What breaking strain line for floater fishing?

The floater main lines here come in 10lb to 15lb. Surface hooklinks are usually a similar or slightly lighter strain.

How long should a zig rig be?

Start with a link about half the depth of the water and adjust a foot at a time. Some anglers start nearer three quarters depth in warm weather.

Can you use normal mono for zig rigs?

You can, but dedicated zig line is finer for its strain and made to hang naturally in mid water. Avoid thick, dark or springy lines that stand out.

What is floater line?

Floater line is a buoyant main line made for surface fishing, so it stays on top between the rod tip and the controller. It makes light controllers easier to cast and gives a quick pick up on the strike.

Do you need special hooks for zig rigs?

Zig and surface hooks use finer wire so they do not pull a buoyant bait down. Sizes 6 to 10 are common.

What are zig sleeves for?

Zig sleeves are weighted tubes that slide over the swivel and hold a long link off the main line. They help stop long zig links tangling on the cast.

When should you fish zigs?

Zigs work when carp are in mid water or near the surface, often in warm spells and on deep waters. They tend to be less effective in cold water under about 8°C.

What knot should you use for zig line?

A five turn grinner or palomar is a common choice for fine zig line. Moisten the turns and tighten slowly so the line does not weaken.
