Daiwa N’Zon Distance Special Feeder Rod

How well is it built?

Daiwa have been a fixture in the UK match-fishing scene for decades, and the N'Zon Distance Special is one of the distance-specialist families within their wider N'Zon feeder range.

It sits below the flagship N'Zon Pro Staff in the hierarchy, alongside the Super Slim, EXT and Pre Bait siblings, pitched at anglers who want genuine distance-casting spec without stretching to full flagship money.

The blank combines Daiwa's X45 anti-twist carbon weave with HVF Nanoplus construction.

X45 cross-wraps carbon at 45 degrees to reduce blank twist under casting load, and HVF Nanoplus uses a high-volume fibre layup that keeps the blank slim while retaining power through the middle section.

Guides are SeaGuide stainless-steel anti-tangle frames with the forward-facing geometry Daiwa specify across the N'Zon range. Ring insert material isn't published by Daiwa UK, so I won't invent numbers there.

The reel seat is a Fuji DPS down-locking screw seat, and the handle is a Cork/EVA Armlock with a Cork/EVA fore grip and a down-locking fore-grip design.

Five variants cover the Distance Special family: 11ft 80g Method (2+3 sections), 12ft 90g Feeder (2+3), 12ft 120g Power (3+3), 13ft 150g Power (3+3), and 14ft 150g Power (3+3). Each is supplied with three CT carbon quivertips.

8.5 is a fair build score. X45 and HVF Nanoplus on a sub-flagship N'Zon with Fuji hardware punches above the price tag.

How well does it cast and feel?

The N'Zon Distance Special is pitched at anglers who want genuine long-range casting without stretching to flagship Daiwa kit.

It sits below the Pro Staff in the hierarchy but carries the key Daiwa blank technologies, X45 anti-twist weave and HVF Nanoplus, so the casting feel is a clear step up from the budget N'Zon siblings.

For me, the 13ft 150g Power Feeder is the volume choice for most UK big-pit and reservoir work at 70 to 100 yards with 3oz to 5oz feeders.

The 14ft 150g Power extends the range further for anglers regularly pushing beyond 100 yards on bigger waters, and the 12ft 120g Power steps in for tighter pit pegs.

The X45 cross-wrap genuinely reduces blank twist on the forward stroke. You feel that as a cleaner release under heavier payloads, with the blank tracking straight rather than rolling slightly off-axis under load.

Where the V-Joint spigot pays off is joint continuity. Daiwa's reinforced spigot keeps casting pressure flowing through the blank rather than concentrating at the ferrule, which is what can cause a flat spot on multi-piece feeder rods.

What the Distance Special isn't is a close-range commercial tool. The 11ft 80g Method variant handles close work, but the Power variants above are dedicated distance feeder rods.

8.0 is the right casting score for a mid-premium distance feeder that genuinely delivers the X45 and V-Joint technology Daiwa are known for.

How does it perform when playing fish?

There's a trade-off any distance feeder rod has to manage, which is staying cushioned enough to land fish cleanly at range without transmitting shock to the hooklink on the initial run. The Distance Special handles this balance well for its class.

On 2 to 5lb commercial carp or big-pit bream on heavier feeder gear, the HVF Nanoplus blank flexes through the middle section as the fight builds. That reduces hard shock transfer to the hooklink on the strike and the first run, which is what can pull hooks at distance.

The 13ft 150g Power handles typical big-pit carp cleanly with enough backbone in the lower blank to steer fish away from snags at 80 yards-plus. Net control comes good once the fish is in the margin.

For river work with a heavier feeder against current, the 14ft 150g Power has the length and backbone to hold a payload steady against flow. The progressive action stays sensitive enough to register bites through the tip without dropping into isolated tip flex under load.

Where the rod shows its mid-premium positioning is on absolute finesse against the flagship Pro Staff above. It does the job cleanly inside its intended window, without quite reaching the tip recovery speed of the flagship tier.

8.0 reflects a rod that plays fish well for its class, with the honest acknowledgement that the flagship tier offers more finesse in reserve.

Is it good value for money?

At typical mid-premium distance feeder pricing, the N'Zon Distance Special has to earn its place against a crowded mid-tier field.

It competes with the Shimano Aero X3 Distance HP, Matrix Aquos Ultra-D, Preston Supera X Distance and Guru N-Gauge Pro Distance at similar price points.

Against the Daiwa N'Zon Pro Staff a clear tier above on price, the Distance Special covers around 80 per cent of the practical distance feeder job without the flagship Air Sensor reel seat or X45X Full Shield blank.

For typical commercial distance work the flagship step-up only makes sense if you specifically want the flagship-tier hardware.

Cross-shopped against the Shimano Aero X3 Distance HP at broadly similar pricing, the Distance Special offers X45 and V-Joint technology versus the Shimano's Diaflash and Seaguide XOG spec. Different brand characters, broadly similar value.

Against the Preston Supera X Distance a clear tier above on price, the N'Zon covers most of the practical job without the flagship Japanese blank.

Where the value case weakens is family complexity. The N'Zon range includes Pro Staff, Distance Special, Super Slim, EXT and Pre Bait siblings, which makes picking the right variant for your venue harder than it needs to be.

7.5 is a fair value score. Real X45 carbon and Fuji hardware at mid-premium pricing, with the honest caveat that the N'Zon family structure is crowded.
