We also take into account any additional features that make life on the bank easier for anglers.

8.5
CASTING ABILITY
?
What Does This Mean?

Easy, frictionless casting that provides accuracy and distance is all rated in this category.

8.5
PLAYING FISH
?
What Does This Mean?

The ability to play fish effectively is an important feature of any fishing rod.

Fishing is a sport, and as part of this sport, feeling the pulls, lunges, and the fight of a fish is an exhilarating experience.

This is all taken into account when rating fishing rods.

8.0
VALUE FOR MONEY
?
What Does This Mean?

How much any fishing rod costs is always a key factor in an angler's final choice.

A rod can have all the bells and whistles under the sun, but if it is unaffordable, it may not be the best choice for some anglers.

This rating considers how the rod performs in all the other categories versus its price point.

Thoughts & Experiences

The Daiwa Powermesh range of rods is very popular on the angling scene. They tend to be more specialised rods with options specifically aimed at carp, barbel and pike fishing. You know what you get with a Daiwa rod, which is renowned quality using the latest technology in rod making.

The deadbait option is another nod to this quality range.

It’s tweaked slightly from the other models in the way that the stiffer butt section is particularly suited to casting heavy deadbait rigs. In testing, I found the blank recovery to be well-optimised for accurate and distant casting with a total rig weight of around 4-5 ounces being cast at around 80 yards with relative ease. This is why this rod scored a credible 8.5 for it’s casting ability in this review.

In terms of playing fish, it performs well and has a good amount of ‘beef to it to be able to bully pike away from danger when needed. The features on the rod are pretty standard with no real ‘fancy’ materials used that you see in the top, premium rods out there.

They are still pretty solid though and also well-balanced which makes it one of the better deadbait rods out there in my opinion. It’s good value as well at around the £100 mark which pitches its suitability at both beginners and more experienced pike fishermen looking for a quality deadbait rod that doesn’t cost a fortune.

What Anglers Like (Pros)

Excellent value for money at around £100, offering Daiwa's renowned build quality
Powerful butt section optimised for casting heavy deadbait rigs accurately
Strong but lightweight construction thanks to high-grade carbon blank with 1K woven carbon
Well-balanced blank with enough backbone to control large pike near snags

What Anglers Dislike (Cons)

Standard components rather than premium materials found on top-end rods
Limited to deadbait fishing specifically, reducing its versatility for other predator techniques

There are four key attributes that form the basis of our reviews on pike fishing rods. These include the following:

Build Quality: – When assessing the build quality of a fishing rod we focus on the raw materials used to build the rod and how they knit together to output the rod’s overall performance.

Casting Ability: – Without stating the obvious here, we test how the rod casts both short distances and longer distances. We are examining how smooth the cast is and how much effort is required to gain the desired distance.

Playing Fish: – Here, we are looking at how a rod can dictate a fight, i.e. its power, how subtle it is and most importantly how enjoyable it is to play fish on.

Value for Money: – Under the ‘value for money’ review, we value and score the rod for its price-point against its quality and actual worth.
