From the moment I picked up the rod it felt balanced, slim, and responsive, with the HVF Nanoplus blank offering a lovely combination of crispness and control. The 11ft 6in version is perfect for commercials, while the 13ft feels like the ideal all-rounder for most anglers.
Longer models at 15ft and 17ft come into their own on rivers, providing superb float control at distance. This is very much a rod range designed for serious float anglers who want top performance without compromise. For anglers unsure which option to choose, I personally recommend the 13ft as the most versatile in the line-up.
The build quality on the Tournament S Match Rod is nothing short of excellent. Daiwa’s HVF Nanoplus carbon makes the blank feel remarkably light in the hand but still resilient under load.
The finish is sleek and understated, with subtle blue detailing that gives the rod a premium look.
The reel seat is rock solid, locking the reel securely and adding to the overall sense of reliability. Combined with the cork/EVA Armlock handle, the rod feels really comfortable in the hand, both lightweight and easy to hold.
The Seaguide guides are another stand-out detail. Their larger profile reduces friction and helps with smooth line flow, especially when casting lighter wagglers. Overall, I’d comfortably give build quality a 9/10.
Casting with the Tournament S feels effortless. The blank has a crisp recovery and a smooth progressive action, which makes delivering wagglers up to 15g accurate and controlled, even when the wind is pushing across the water.
With lighter floats, the rod almost adapts itself, giving a nice tippy flick that helps small wagglers cut through the air and reach their mark with surprising ease. It’s punchy when you need it, but still forgiving enough for fine lines.
What stood out most for me was the balance. Paired with a 2000 or 3000 reel, it casts beautifully, feels solid and well built, and sits comfortably in the hand. For that reason, I’d have no hesitation giving casting and feel a strong 9 out of 10.
Playing fish is where this rod really shines. The action is soft and forgiving through the tip, making it perfect for protecting fine hooklengths with even the feistiest of F1s.
Yet, when you hook into something bigger, the rod quickly powers up through the middle and butt sections.
On small rivers, the control you get is superb. Even when a fish darts for cover, the V-Joint Alpha technology keeps the pressure consistent without flat spots. Every turn and lunge translates nicely through the blank, making the fight enjoyable while still being practical.
It’s a rod that gives you confidence, whether stacking up with silvers or enjoying some action from larger fish, the playing fish score is an easy 9/10.
There’s no denying the Tournament S Match sits at the higher end of the market. You are paying for Daiwa’s premium build and proven technologies, and while this places it above many mid-range rods, the performance backs it up.
If you’re a dedicated float angler fishing both natural and commercial venues, the investment feels worthwhile. The durability of the blank and the premium fittings mean this is a rod built to last and perform for many years.
That said, casual anglers or those on a tighter budget may find better short-term value in more affordable models. For me though, as someone who spends a lot of time float fishing, it’s worth every penny. Value sits at 8/10, reflecting the quality but also the price.
