5 Things To Know

  1. The 6000 EU model uses a 4.8:1 gear ratio, retrieves 90cm per turn and weighs 587g.
  2. Its 9kg maximum drag is stronger than smaller Baitrunner models offer.
  3. AR-C spool shaping and a one-piece bail are there to help line leave and return more cleanly.
  4. Varispeed oscillation lays line in overlapping layers rather than letting it stack in one place.
  5. It has 3 shielded S A-RB bearings plus a roller bearing, so the spec is practical rather than overcomplicated.

Shimano Baitrunner D Reel – 6000 EU Review

The Shimano Baitrunner D 6000 EU is a mid-size freespool reel that puts Shimano's classic Baitrunner system into a tougher 6000-size body. You get a deep-skirted gold aluminium spool, an XT-7 body and rotor, a machined aluminium handle with a T-shaped knob and a waterproof drag rated to 9kg, so it's built for strength rather than saving weight.

It's a versatile reel that suits carp, barbel, pike and catfish, and with its waterproof drag it'll cope with saltwater fishing too. It isn't a long-range big pit or a lightweight reel, but if you want a sturdy, proven Baitrunner without paying for the Shimano Baitrunner XTB CI4 LC, I think it's a very sensible choice.

How well is it built?

The Baitrunner D is built for toughness rather than low weight.

Shimano use an XT-7 body and rotor, a cold forged aluminium spool and gear and a machined aluminium handle, and on paper it reads like a reel made to take a pounding from big fish, which is why it's become such a favourite with catfish and predator anglers.

At 587g it's on the heavy side for a 6000-size reel, but I think that's a fair trade for the strength, and on rests or alarms the extra weight matters far less than it would on a reel you hold all day.

You get three shielded A-RB ball bearings plus a roller bearing, which is a modest count at this price, but Shimano have gone for practical and proven rather than overcomplicated.

The gold spool and black body make it one of the most recognisable reels on the bank, and the one-piece bail means fewer places for line to catch.

How well does it cast and retrieve?

The AR-C spool shape is designed to help line leave the spool cleanly on the cast, and paired with the one-piece bail it cuts down the chance of line catching around the bail arm.

Varispeed oscillation lays five layers of line per oscillation, which should help keep the line bedded down neatly on the spool.

The 4.8:1 gear ratio brings back 90cm of line per turn of the handle, which I think is plenty for most carp, barbel and pike fishing at sensible ranges, and the hi-torque gearing gives you the power to wind a big fish back towards you.

Where it falls short is distance. It isn't a long-range reel in the way the Daiwa Emblem 45 or the Shimano Ultegra 5500 XTD are, so if you're fishing big pits at range, a proper big pit makes more sense. For rivers, margins and mid-range swims, though, I'd be very happy with it.

How useful is the drag system?

The Baitrunner system is the reason most people buy this reel. With it engaged, a fish can take line freely before you engage the main drag, so it's ideal for fishing static baits on rests or alarms, whether that's for carp, barbel or a big pike or catfish.

The main drag is waterproof and rated to a 9kg maximum, which is stronger than the smaller Baitrunner models and plenty for big carp, pike and catfish. If you fancy using it in salt water as well, I think the waterproof drag is a real plus.

Next to the Shimano Baitrunner DL I'd rate the drag level, because both use the same proven Baitrunner idea, while the Baitrunner XTB CI4 LC is the one to step up to if you want Shimano's best freespool.

For me it's a dependable drag that does exactly what you need it to, without any fuss.

Is it good value for money?

The Baitrunner D sits in the middle of the freespool market.

It costs more than the Shimano Baitrunner DL and the Daiwa 20 GS BR LT, and a lot more than budget freespools like the Fox EOS 10000, but for the extra you get the cold forged aluminium spool and gear, the XT-7 body and a waterproof drag in a stronger 6000 size.

There's no spare spool in the box, which is a shame at this price, and with three ball bearings and a roller it's not the most refined reel you can buy for the money. That's why I've scored its value a little lower than the Baitrunner DL, even though it's built for heavier work.

It suits anglers who want one strong, proven freespool for carp, barbel, pike and catfish, and maybe a bit of saltwater fishing, and who care more about toughness than saving weight.

Pros

  • Baitrunner system lets a fish take line before the drag engages
  • Waterproof main drag rated to a 9kg maximum
  • Cold forged aluminium spool and gear, with an XT-7 body
  • AR-C spool and one-piece bail help line come off cleanly
  • Varispeed oscillation and a 90cm retrieve per turn of the handle

Cons

  • No spare spool comes in the box at this price
  • At 587g it's a heavy reel for a 6000 size

Features and Specifications

Feature What this means
Baitrunner System The Baitrunner system lets a fish take line freely without triggering the main drag, so you won't get a rod pulled in when fishing with slack lines or on a running set-up. A flick of the bail or turn of the handle disengages it instantly.
Bearings: 3 S A-RB + 1 Roller Bearing Shimano's Shielded Anti-Rust Bearings (S A-RB) are protected against water and dirt ingress, keeping the reel smooth and reliable over time. The additional roller bearing sits in the line roller to help reduce line twist as you retrieve.
XT-7 Body and Rotor XT-7 is Shimano's high-density graphite composite material, which gives the body and rotor a strong, rigid construction without adding unnecessary weight. It keeps the reel tough enough for hard use while remaining comfortable to carry.
Cold Forged Aluminium Spool and Gear Cold forging compresses the aluminium under high pressure, producing a denser and stronger component than a standard cast part. This means the main gear and spool are built to handle the stress of big, powerful fish without flexing or failing.
Deep Skirted Gold Aluminium Spool The deep skirted design helps prevent line from working its way behind the spool, which can cause tangles and damage. The large 6000 size spool holds plenty of heavy mainline, making it well suited for big fish at range or in strong currents.
Varispeed Oscillation (5 Layers per Oscillation) Varispeed oscillation varies the speed at which the spool moves up and down as you wind, so line is laid in overlapping layers rather than stacking in the same grooves. This reduces line digging in under load and helps the line peel off the spool more smoothly on the cast.
Waterproof Drag The drag washers are sealed against water and grit, keeping the drag running smoothly and consistently even in wet or harsh conditions. This is particularly useful for saltwater or river fishing where splashing and moisture are unavoidable.
One Piece Bail A one piece bail arm has no join points or screws along its length, which removes a common weak spot found on lesser reels. It is more rigid and less likely to flex or fail under the pressure of a hard fighting fish.
Handle: Single T-Bar (EU 6000 Model) The 6000 EU model comes fitted with a T-shaped handle grip, which gives a firm and comfortable hold during long retrieves or when cranking line back against a big fish. This handle style is a popular choice among specimen and predator anglers.
Machined Aluminium Handle The handle arm is machined from aluminium rather than moulded from plastic, giving it far greater rigidity and strength. This contributes directly to the high-torque feel of the reel when you are winding in a large, powerful fish.
Fresh and Saltwater Compatibility The combination of shielded bearings, waterproof drag, and corrosion-resistant aluminium components means this reel is built to cope with both freshwater and saltwater environments. It is a practical choice if you fish a variety of venues and species throughout the year.
Spare Spool No spare spool is included in the box with this model. If you want a second spool loaded with a different line, you would need to purchase one separately.
