The Spomb X Reel product video - YouTube
The Spomb X Reel is a purpose-built baiting reel developed for casting Spombs and other baiting devices, rather than a general big-pit reel adapted for the job. It is aimed at anglers who spod heavily and want a reel focused on repeated loaded casts.
The drivetrain uses machine-cut aluminium and brass gearing, with sealed drag, rotor and body components. That design focus is durability under wet, gritty baiting work, where a normal reel can take a lot of punishment.
Its 25kg Quick Clutch carbon-matrix drag is there to stop spool slip during the cast. The quick adjustment also helps when moving between locked-up casting tension and normal line control. The 5.2:1 gear ratio retrieves 124cm of line per handle turn. Paired with slow oscillation and a 300m capacity for 0.18mm braid, it is built around fast recovery and tidy braid lay.
Line control details include dual soft-sprung clips with line-safe surrounds, a rotor brake and a no-return ramp. Those features are there to reduce accidental bail closure and keep clipped-up baiting more repeatable.
At 603g with 3 + 1 bearings and an anti-reverse system, the Spomb X is a specialist reel. Its natural place is a dedicated spod rod, where baiting efficiency matters every session.
| Feature | What this means |
|---|---|
| Purpose-Built Spombing Design | Unlike general-purpose reels that are simply marketed as spod reels, this reel was designed from scratch specifically for casting Spombs and other baiting devices. Every component is built to handle the repeated heavy loads that spodding puts on a reel throughout a long session. |
| 25kg Quick Clutch Drag Carbon Matrix | A very high-resistance drag system rated to 25kg means the spool stays locked solid during the cast so you get zero slip, which is essential when you're punching out heavy, fully loaded Spombs at distance. The Quick Clutch lets you switch between locked and freespool quickly and easily between casts. |
| Aluminium Brass Combination Gearing | The internal gears are machine cut from a combination of high-strength aluminium and brass, which gives you a precise, smooth feel that holds up over years of heavy use. This is far more durable than the cheaper pressed or moulded gears you find in many budget spod reels. |
| Sealed Core Components | The drag, rotor and body are all sealed against water and debris getting inside. Spombing involves a lot of splashing and wet braid, so keeping grit and moisture out of the internals is key to keeping the reel smooth and reliable for longer. |
| Grease Port for Maintenance | A dedicated grease port lets you lubricate the internals without having to strip the reel down. A quick top-up now and then means the gears and bearings stay properly maintained, prolonging the life of the reel significantly with very little effort. |
| Slow Oscillation for Line Lay | The spool moves up and down slowly as you retrieve, laying the braid in a tight, even pattern. Good line lay reduces tangles and allows the braid to peel off smoothly on the cast, helping you hit your spot consistently at range. |
| Line Capacity: 300m of 0.18mm Braid | The spool is sized to hold 300 metres of 0.18mm braid, which is the typical diameter used for spodding. The fill level has been optimised so the braid sits at the right point on the spool, reducing the risk of frap-ups (loose loops flying off the spool and tangling during a cast) while still allowing maximum distance. |
| Dual Line Clips | Two soft-sprung line clips with line-safe surrounds let you clip up to a set distance so you can hit the same spot cast after cast. The soft spring and protective surrounds help prevent the braid from being damaged or weakened where it sits in the clip. |
| Rotor Brake and No-Return Ramp | These two features work together to stop the bail arm from accidentally closing mid-cast, which can cause a crack-off where the line snaps under the sudden shock load. A crack-off while spodding can mean losing your Spomb in the lake, so this is a genuinely important safety feature. |
| Weight: 603g | At 603g, this is a reasonably light reel given the heavy-duty build. Carbon reinforcement is used to keep the weight down without sacrificing strength, so your spod rod stays balanced and comfortable to cast repeatedly over many hours. |
| Bearings: 3+1 | Three stainless steel ball bearings plus one roller bearing give you a smooth, fluid retrieve. The roller bearing specifically handles the anti-reverse function, which means the handle does not kick back when you stop winding, keeping everything feeling tight and controlled. |
| UK Development | The reel was developed from the ground up in the UK by the Spomb team, meaning the design reflects real-world British carp fishing conditions and the specific demands of Spombing rather than being a generic overseas design with a spod-reel label added to it. |
