Fly lines from Scientific Anglers, Airflo and Snowbee

How We Test Fly Lines

Every fly line here is scored on the same four things. Build and coating covers the core, the coating, memory and the loops, while casting and turnover weighs the taper, head length and how well the line loads a rod and turns over a team of flies. Presentation and handling covers how softly the line lands, how it sinks and how it behaves in the hand, and value for money sets all of that against the usual price. The overall score is the average of the four.

We judge each line on its specs and weigh them against what independent reviews and owners report. The scores run as an honest ladder, so premium lines score above budget ones, and value only nudges a score rather than levelling it. Floating, intermediate and sinking lines do different jobs, so we name a winner for each rather than one best overall.

A line only casts well when it matches the rod's line rating, so check the weight on your rod before you buy. Our fly reels guide covers the reels to load it on, the fly rods guide covers the rods, and you can browse every line in our fly lines range.

Scientific Anglers Amplitude Smooth Trout GP Floating Fly Line WF

Best Floating Fly Line

Scientific Anglers Amplitude Smooth Trout GP Floating Fly Line WF

How It Scored

Build & Coating 9.1

AST Plus coating, braided core and welded loops.

Casting & Turnover 9.1

Infinity belly, longer tapers, quarter-size-heavy profile.

Presentation & Handling 9.0

Mid-length head for mending and soft presentation.

Value For Money 8.7

Dearer, but the coating and taper justify it.

The Scientific Anglers Amplitude Smooth Trout GP is a premium weight-forward floater, with AST Plus built into the coating to make it slicker and more durable. It's built on a braided multifilament core, every line is 90ft long, and it comes in 3, 5, 6 and 7 weights.

The Trout GP taper pairs an Infinity-style belly with longer front and rear tapers, a quarter-size-heavy profile and a 49.5ft to 52ft head that's made for mending and accurate casting at range. Three colours mark the line's sections, and welded loops make rigging quick.

It suits trout anglers who want one premium floater for rivers and stillwaters. Next to the Scientific Anglers Mastery Trout GP, it shares the same taper and head lengths, with AST Plus in place of standard AST. The Guideline Fario CDC, by contrast, is more of a small-river dry-fly specialist.

To be fair, it's one of the dearer lines you can buy. For a floater that covers pretty much all your trout fishing, though, I think it's the best floating fly line in this guide.

Best forTrout anglers wanting one premium floater for rivers and stillwaters
I likeAST Plus coating for slickness and durability
Avoid ifYou want the same Trout GP taper for less, as the Mastery Trout GP gives that.

Pros

  • ✓AST Plus in the coating adds slickness and durability
  • ✓Mid-length head made for mending and accuracy at distance
  • ✓Infinity-style belly with longer front and rear tapers
  • ✓Three colours mark the separate sections of the line
  • ✓Braided multifilament core and welded loops for quick rigging

Cons

  • ✕One of the dearer fly lines, so a big outlay
  • ✕Not built for regular heavy streamer or bulky indicator work

Scientific Anglers Mastery Trout GP Floating Fly Line WF

SA's Finesse Mastery Floater

Scientific Anglers Mastery Trout GP Floating Fly Line WF

How It Scored

Build & Coating 8.7

Braided core, AST additive and welded loops.

Casting & Turnover 8.6

Infinity belly with longer front and rear tapers.

Presentation & Handling 8.7

Finesse-leaning taper for dries and nymphs.

Value For Money 8.5

Premium taper without the top-end price.

The Scientific Anglers Mastery Trout GP is a floating weight-forward line built on a braided multifilament core, with Scientific Anglers' AST additive in the coating to keep it slick and hard-wearing. It comes in WF-3 to WF-7, and every line is 90ft long.

Its Infinity-style belly has longer front and rear tapers and a quarter-size-heavy profile, with heads from 49.5ft to 52ft. The first 30ft weighs 105 to 195 grains, SA Line ID helps you tell your lines apart, and welded loops handle leaders and backing.

It suits trout anglers fishing dries, nymphs and smaller streamers on rivers and stillwaters. Next to the Amplitude Smooth Trout GP, it has the same taper with standard AST rather than AST Plus, and compared with the Guideline Fario CDC, it's the more all-round line.

To be fair, the Amplitude Smooth's coating is slicker. For a finesse-leaning trout floater at a sensible price, though, I think it's very hard to fault.

Best forTrout anglers fishing dries, nymphs and smaller streamers
I likeSame Trout GP taper as the dearer Amplitude Smooth
Avoid ifYou want a dedicated river dry-fly line, as the Fario CDC is built for that.

Pros

  • ✓Infinity tapered belly with longer front and rear tapers
  • ✓Quarter-size-heavy profile should load modern, faster rods
  • ✓AST additive brings slickness and durability to the coating
  • ✓Five weights from WF-3 to WF-7, all 90ft long
  • ✓Welded loops and SA Line ID make it easy to use

Cons

  • ✕Standard AST rather than the AST Plus on the Amplitude Smooth
  • ✕Aimed at smaller flies rather than heavy lures or big streamers

Guideline Fario CDC Floating Fly Line WF

Guideline's River Dry-Fly Line

Guideline Fario CDC Floating Fly Line WF

How It Scored

Build & Coating 8.6

12lb braided core, dense slick coating, looped ends.

Casting & Turnover 8.5

Short front taper and long belly for control.

Presentation & Handling 8.6

Low diameter and subtle head for clear water.

Value For Money 8.4

Mid-priced for a well-designed river specialist.

The Guideline Fario CDC is a weight-forward floater for shy trout on light gear, made in WF #4, #5 and #6. It has a 12lb braided multifilament core and a dense, slick coating that keeps the diameter and wind resistance low.

Its short front taper is built to straighten long leaders with control, and the long belly and back tapers keep the loop parallel so you can correct it in the air. The head is 12m or 12.5m, it's looped at both ends, and the spring green grey head sits on a bone white running line.

It's a river dry-fly line first, for clear water and long leaders, though it also suits lakes. Next to the Mastery Trout GP, it's the more specialised choice, while the Airflo Superflo Mini Tip is built for stillwater buzzer fishing.

To be fair, it only covers #4 to #6. For dries and long leaders on small, clear rivers, though, I think it's an excellent specialist.

Best forRiver anglers fishing dries on long leaders for wary trout
I likeShort front taper turns over long leaders smoothly
Avoid ifYou want sinking tips for stillwater buzzers, as the Superflo Mini Tip has those.

Pros

  • ✓Short front taper turns over long leaders in a controlled way
  • ✓Low-diameter coating cuts through wind for accurate presentation
  • ✓Long belly and back tapers keep a stable, parallel loop
  • ✓Spring green grey head with a bone white running line
  • ✓Looped at both ends, with a 12lb braided multifilament core

Cons

  • ✕Covers WF #4 to #6 only, so it suits lighter rods
  • ✕A specialist taper, less suited to heavy flies at long range

Airflo Superflo Mini Tip Fly Line

Airflo's Midge-Tip Superflo

Airflo Superflo Mini Tip Fly Line

How It Scored

Build & Coating 8.5

Floating line with four distinct tip densities.

Casting & Turnover 8.6

Superflo casting with 3ft, 6ft or 12ft tips.

Presentation & Handling 8.6

Tips from 0.5ips to 7ips control depth.

Value For Money 8.3

Mid-priced, though you may want several tips.

The Airflo Superflo Mini Tip is a floater with a short sinking front section, built for buzzer, nymph and washing-line fishing on stillwaters. It comes in WF6, WF7 and WF8, with tips of 3ft, 6ft or 12ft.

Fast intermediate tips sink at 1.5 to 2ips, Slow Tips at 0.5ips, the 12ft Mid Tip at 1ips and the 3ft Anchor Tip at 7ips. The 3ft Fast Tip drops vertically, like an ascending or descending midge pupa, and the Anchor Tip holds flies deep and static.

It suits reservoir and small stillwater anglers fishing from the bank or a boat. Next to the Guideline Fario CDC, a river dry-fly line, it's built for a different job, and compared with the Snowbee XS-Plus Twin Colour, it gets your flies under the surface.

To be fair, you may end up wanting more than one tip. For buzzers and the washing line on stillwaters, though, I think it's a really versatile choice.

Best forStillwater anglers fishing buzzers and the washing line
I likeFour tip types from 0.5ips to 7ips
Avoid ifYou need a full intermediate, as the Airflo Sixth Sense 2 Intermediate is one.

Pros

  • ✓Four tip types, from 0.5ips Slow Tips to a 7ips Anchor Tip
  • ✓Tip lengths of 3ft, 6ft and 12ft to suit the depth
  • ✓3ft Fast Tip sinks vertically like a rising and falling midge pupa
  • ✓Slow Tips hold flies just under the surface for the washing line
  • ✓12ft Mid Tip blends gradually from floating belly to 1ips tip

Cons

  • ✕Many anglers will want more than one tip, which adds up
  • ✕Weights run WF6 to WF8, so it's not for light river rods

Snowbee XS-Plus Twin Colour Floating Fly Line

Snowbee's Twin-Colour Coaching Line

Snowbee XS-Plus Twin Colour Floating Fly Line

How It Scored

Build & Coating 8.4

Supple, memory-free build with a welded front loop.

Casting & Turnover 8.4

Weight-forward profile with a slick, low-friction coating.

Presentation & Handling 8.5

Twin colours for casting, subtle once it lands.

Value For Money 8.4

Mid-priced, with line care and connectors included.

The Snowbee XS-Plus Twin Colour is a weight-forward floating line split into ivory and blue sections, which makes your loop and the loading point easy to read. It's a line casting instructors and coaches use to show technique.

The line is soft and supple with no memory to speak of, and its ultra-low-friction coating should help it shoot. A welded front loop speeds up leader changes, and Snowbee line care and two loop connectors come with each #5 or #7 line.

Anglers learning to cast or tidying up their loops will get the most from it, on rivers and stillwaters alike. Next to the Airflo Superflo Mini Tip, it's a straight floater for dries, nymphs and buzzers and costs less, while the Greys Platinum X Float is cheaper still.

To be fair, it's made in #5 and #7 only, where the Greys covers WF5 to WF8. For newer fly anglers and anyone working on their technique, though, I think it's a really useful floater.

Best forAnglers learning to cast or improving their loops on any water
I likeIvory and blue sections that show the loading point
Avoid ifYou want a sinking tip for buzzers, as the Airflo Superflo Mini Tip has one.

Pros

  • ✓Ivory and blue sections make your loops easy to follow
  • ✓Two colours help you find the loading point every cast
  • ✓Soft, supple and memory-free build should lie straight
  • ✓Ultra-low-friction coating helps the line shoot through the rings
  • ✓Welded front loop, two loop connectors and line care included

Cons

  • ✕Dearer than the Greys Platinum X Float, which comes in four sizes
  • ✕SA's Mastery Trout GP adds AST slickness and a braided core

Greys Platinum X Float Fly Line

Best Budget Fly Line

Greys Platinum X Float Fly Line

How It Scored

Build & Coating 8.0

Slick, low-memory coating with welded loops.

Casting & Turnover 8.1

Full-size heavy taper and low-diameter running line.

Presentation & Handling 8.0

Delicate enough for everyday floating-line trout fishing.

Value For Money 8.4

One of the cheapest floaters with this spec.

Developed in the UK with modern fast-action rods in mind, the Greys Platinum X Float is a 105ft weight-forward floater. Its medium-length head and full-size heavy design should load a fast rod quickly, yet it's still built for delicate presentation.

A slick, low-memory coating should keep it easy to handle, while the thin running line is there for extra distance. You get welded loops and a tri-colour format, in WF5, WF6, WF7 and WF8.

Budget-minded anglers, newer fly fishers with a fast rod and anyone setting up a spare outfit should all get on with it. Next to the Snowbee XS-Plus Twin Colour, it's cheaper with two more sizes, while the Scientific Anglers Amplitude Smooth Trout GP adds AST Plus slickness at a much higher price.

To be fair, the heavier taper won't suit every soft, slower rod. For trout anglers on a fast rod who want a tidy floater without spending much, though, I think it's the best value pick in the guide.

Best forBudget-minded trout anglers with a modern fast-action fly rod
I likeFull-size heavy taper that loads fast rods quickly
Avoid ifYou want AST Plus slickness, as the Scientific Anglers Amplitude Smooth Trout GP has it.

Pros

  • ✓Full-size heavy design is built to load fast-action rods
  • ✓Slick, supple, low-memory coating on a budget floating line
  • ✓Low-diameter running line should shoot smoothly on longer casts
  • ✓A full 105ft of line in WF5, WF6, WF7 and WF8
  • ✓Welded loops and a tri-colour format at a low price

Cons

  • ✕Heavier taper may feel too much on softer, slower rods
  • ✕SA's Amplitude Smooth Trout GP has the slicker AST Plus coating

Airflo Sixth Sense 2 Intermediate Fly Line Fast Inter WF

Best Intermediate Fly Line

Airflo Sixth Sense 2 Intermediate Fly Line Fast Inter WF

How It Scored

Build & Coating 8.9

Low-stretch Power core that stays supple in cold.

Casting & Turnover 8.9

Long front taper and 46ft head for teams.

Presentation & Handling 8.9

Fast 1.5ips sink with a low-profile finish.

Value For Money 8.7

Dearer, but the core and taper justify it.

The Airflo Sixth Sense 2 Fast Intermediate is a 1.5ips stillwater line for fishing flies a little way down, out of the surface chop. A long front taper is there for teams of two or three flies, balancing a delicate turnover with distance.

Underneath, the low-stretch Power core keeps you in direct touch with the flies and stays supple when it's cold. The 105ft line carries a 46ft head in every size from WF5/6 to WF8/9, finished in translucent green and mid-green.

Reservoir and small stillwater anglers fishing buzzers, nymphs and lures from the bank or a boat will get the most from it. Next to the Scientific Anglers Wet Cel Intermediate Clear, it sinks a touch faster, and its low-stretch Power core and long front taper make it the best intermediate fly line in the guide.

To be fair, it's one of the dearer intermediates, and a slower line suits fish right in the film. For anglers who fish teams of flies just under the ripple week in, week out, though, I think it's worth every penny.

Best forStillwater anglers fishing teams of flies just under the surface
I likeLong front taper that turns over a team of flies
Avoid ifYou want a clear finish, as the Scientific Anglers Wet Cel Intermediate Clear has one.

Pros

  • ✓Long front taper made to turn over teams of flies
  • ✓Low-stretch Power core gives direct contact with the flies
  • ✓Power core stays supple in cold conditions
  • ✓1.5ips sink rate gets flies down under the wind ripple
  • ✓Translucent green finish keeps a low profile in the water

Cons

  • ✕One of the dearer intermediate fly lines you can buy
  • ✕Sinks faster than a slow intermediate for fish near the film

Scientific Anglers Wet Cel Intermediate Clear Weight Forward Fly Line

SA's Clear Wet Cel Intermediate

Scientific Anglers Wet Cel Intermediate Clear Weight Forward Fly Line

How It Scored

Build & Coating 8.2

Simple, no-frills build on a monofilament core.

Casting & Turnover 8.3

Weight-forward, with one head length in every size.

Presentation & Handling 8.4

Clear throughout, sinking steadily at 1.25ips.

Value For Money 8.4

Mid-priced for a clear, dependable intermediate.

Clear from end to end, the Scientific Anglers Wet Cel Intermediate Clear is a general-purpose weight-forward line for nymphs and lures. A monofilament core and a 1.25ips sink rate keep the flies just under the surface.

There are four sizes, #5 to #8, each 24.3m long with the same head length throughout. The build is plain and no-frills, and it's designed for cold to medium water, which suits a UK season.

Stillwater anglers after wary trout in clear water will get the most from it, from the bank or a boat. Next to the Airflo Sixth Sense 2 Fast Intermediate, it sinks a little slower and costs a good deal less, while the Greys Platinum X Intermediate is cheaper again and 105ft long.

To be fair, a clear line is harder for you to follow on the water too. For anglers who want a simple, stealthy intermediate on a sensible budget, though, I think it's a very sound choice.

Best forStillwater anglers wanting a low-visibility intermediate for wary trout
I likeFully clear finish for wary trout in clear water
Avoid ifYou need a long front taper, as the Airflo Sixth Sense 2 Intermediate has one.

Pros

  • ✓Clear all the way through for a low-visibility presentation
  • ✓Steady 1.25ips sink rate fishes just under the surface
  • ✓Same head length and overall length across all four sizes
  • ✓Covers #5 to #8 for river and stillwater rods
  • ✓Simple, no-frills weight-forward build at a mid-range price

Cons

  • ✕Plainer build than the Sixth Sense 2's low-stretch Power core
  • ✕Clear line is harder for you to follow on the water

Greys Platinum X Intermediate Fly Line

Greys' Budget Intermediate

Greys Platinum X Intermediate Fly Line

How It Scored

Build & Coating 7.9

Slick low-memory coating, welded loops, twin-colour finish.

Casting & Turnover 8.0

Full-size heavy distance taper with a slim running line.

Presentation & Handling 8.0

Fishes just under the surface and handles well in hand.

Value For Money 8.2

One of the cheapest intermediates, with loops and 105ft.

The Greys Platinum X Intermediate is a 105ft weight-forward line for fishing just under the surface from the boat or the bank. It comes in WF6, WF7 and WF8, with an aggressive full-size heavy distance taper on a low-diameter, intermediate-density running line.

That heavier-than-standard taper suits a fast-action rod, and the slim running line should shoot freely on long casts. A slick, low-memory coating, a twin-colour finish and welded loops at both ends round it off, and it was designed in the UK.

It suits reservoir and small-stillwater anglers who want a cheap first intermediate for buzzers, nymphs and lures. Next to the SA Wet Cel Intermediate Clear, it's cheaper but less stealthy, as the Wet Cel is clear right through. The Airflo Sixth Sense 2 Sinking that follows it fishes much deeper, at 3ips or 7ips.

To be fair, it's plainer than the Airflo Sixth Sense 2 Fast Intermediate, and the heavy taper wants a quick rod. For budget anglers with a fast rod, though, I think it's a very sensible intermediate.

Best forBudget stillwater anglers wanting a first intermediate for a fast rod
I likeFull-size heavy distance taper on a slim running line
Avoid ifYou want a clear line for wary trout, as the SA Wet Cel Intermediate Clear is.

Pros

  • ✓Full-size heavy distance taper should load fast-action rods quickly
  • ✓Slick, smooth coating keeps memory low and handles well
  • ✓Welded loops at both ends for quick leader and backing changes
  • ✓Low-diameter intermediate running line should shoot well on long casts
  • ✓One of the cheaper intermediates, at 105ft in WF6, WF7 and WF8

Cons

  • ✕Twin-colour finish is less stealthy than the clear Wet Cel Intermediate
  • ✕Full-size heavy taper may feel too much on slower, softer rods

Airflo Sixth Sense 2 Sinking Fly Line WF

Best Sinking Fly Line

Airflo Sixth Sense 2 Sinking Fly Line WF

How It Scored

Build & Coating 8.8

Low-stretch core, built-in hang markers, coded colours.

Casting & Turnover 8.8

Long front taper turns over teams of flies.

Presentation & Handling 8.8

Precise 3.0ips and 7.0ips rates for known depths.

Value For Money 8.7

Mid-priced, with hang markers and two densities.

The Airflo Sixth Sense 2 Sinking is a 105ft stillwater line with precision-controlled sink rates. It comes as a WF5/6 Sink 3 at 3.0ips in Dark Green/Aqua, or a WF7/8 Sink 7 at 7.0ips in Black/Grey, both on a low-stretch core.

A long front taper is built to turn over teams of flies, balancing delicacy with distance. Built-in hang markers, short at 10ft, double at 20ft and long at 40ft, show how much line is left on every retrieve, so holding the flies on the hang is simple.

It suits reservoir and stillwater anglers fishing buzzers, nymphs and lures at a known depth. Next to the Greys Platinum X Intermediate, it fishes far deeper and adds the hang markers, while the Airflo Booby Basher sinks faster still at 8ips but is a specialist long-range line.

To be fair, each sink rate is tied to one size, so match it to your rod. For stillwater trout anglers who want one sinking line that does it all, though, I think it's the best sinking line in the guide.

Best forStillwater anglers fishing teams of flies at a known depth
I likeHang markers at 10ft, 20ft and 40ft
Avoid ifYou want 8ips for long-range booby work, as the Airflo Booby Basher does.

Pros

  • ✓Precision-controlled sink rates of 3.0ips and 7.0ips for known depths
  • ✓Long front taper is built to turn over teams of flies
  • ✓Hang markers at 10ft, 20ft and 40ft show the line left
  • ✓Low-stretch core keeps you in direct contact with the flies
  • ✓Different colours for Sink 3 and Sink 7 make them easy to tell apart

Cons

  • ✕Sink 3 comes as a WF5/6 and Sink 7 as a WF7/8
  • ✕Dearer than the Guideline Classic Trout Sink 3, which also sinks at 3ips

Airflo Booby Basher Fly Line

Airflo's 8ips Booby Basher

Airflo Booby Basher Fly Line

How It Scored

Build & Coating 8.8

Cuttable 55ft head and ultra-thin ridged running line.

Casting & Turnover 8.8

Stable loop built for long casts on fast rods.

Presentation & Handling 8.5

Fast 8ips sink and high-vis running line, not delicate.

Value For Money 8.6

Dearer, but built to do one job very well.

The Airflo Booby Basher is a Di8 line that sinks at 8 inches per second, made for long-range reservoir fishing from the bank or a boat. It's 165ft long with a 55ft grey and black head, and it drops flies to 30 feet or more.

The head is made to be cut for your rod, to about 40ft on a 7/8-weight. Its ultra-thin, ridged running line in high-vis orange reduces tangles and shows takes clearly, while a stable loop helps it carry distance on an ultra-fast tip-action rod.

It suits experienced anglers fishing boobies on big, deep concrete-bowl reservoirs. Next to the Airflo Sixth Sense 2 Sinking, it sinks faster and is built to cast further, but it covers far less general fishing. The Guideline Classic Trout Sink 3 that follows it is a simpler, cheaper 3ips line for everyday stillwater work.

To be fair, it's one of the dearer lines and it needs a skilled caster. For long-range booby fishing on deep reservoirs, though, I think it's a superb specialist line.

Best forExperienced reservoir anglers fishing boobies deep at long range
I likeSinks at 8ips to 30 feet or more
Avoid ifYou want one all-round sinking line, as the Airflo Sixth Sense 2 Sinking is.

Pros

  • ✓Sinks at 8 inches per second to reach 30 feet or more
  • ✓Ultra-thin, ridged running line is there to reduce tangles
  • ✓High-vis orange running line makes takes easier to spot
  • ✓Stable loop and thin running line are built for long casts
  • ✓The 55ft head can be cut to suit your own rod

Cons

  • ✕The head needs cutting to about 40ft for 7/8-weight rods
  • ✕A specialist line for experienced casters with ultra-fast tip-action rods

Guideline Classic Trout Sink 3 Fly Line

Guideline's Classic Di3

Guideline Classic Trout Sink 3 Fly Line

How It Scored

Build & Coating 8.2

6% low-stretch core, loops at both ends, ID tag.

Casting & Turnover 8.3

Short front taper loads quickly, and the belly turns flies.

Presentation & Handling 8.3

Steady 3ips sink and a smooth, supple coating.

Value For Money 8.4

One of the cheaper sinking lines, with a sound spec.

The Guideline Classic Trout Sink 3 is a weight-forward trout line in #5 to #8 that sinks at 3 inches per second. It's 27.5m long with a 12m head, made up of a short 2m front taper, a 6m belly and a 4m back taper.

That short front and forward weight should load the rod easily, while the belly carries enough mass to turn over a variety of flies. A 6% low-stretch core helps you feel subtle takes, and it's pre-looped at both ends with an ID tag on the front loop.

It suits stillwater anglers who want a dependable mid-depth sinker without paying for extras. Next to the Airflo Booby Basher, it's a far gentler, more general line, sinking at 3ips rather than 8ips. It's also cheaper than the Airflo Sixth Sense 2 Sinking, which matches its Sink 3 rate but adds hang markers.

To be fair, its single colour won't help you judge the hang the way the Sixth Sense 2's markers do. For everyday mid-depth stillwater fishing, though, I think it's a very sound buy.

Best forStillwater anglers wanting a simple, easy-loading 3ips sinking line
I likeShort front taper and forward weight load quickly
Avoid ifYou want built-in hang markers, as the Airflo Sixth Sense 2 Sinking has them.

Pros

  • ✓Short 2m front taper and forward weight load the rod easily
  • ✓A 6% low-stretch core helps you detect subtle takes
  • ✓Sinks at a steady 3 inches per second for mid-depth work
  • ✓Pre-looped at both ends, with an ID tag on the front loop
  • ✓Comes in #5 to #8, covering most stillwater trout rods

Cons

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best fly line?

It depends on how you fish. The Scientific Anglers Amplitude Smooth Trout GP is our Best Floating Fly Line at 9.0, the Airflo Sixth Sense 2 Fast Intermediate is our Best Intermediate Fly Line, the Airflo Sixth Sense 2 Sinking is our Best Sinking Fly Line, and the Greys Platinum X Float is our Best Budget Fly Line.

Should I buy a floating or an intermediate fly line?

Start with a floating line, because it covers dries, nymphs and buzzers on rivers and stillwaters. Add an intermediate when trout feed just under the surface or a ripple makes a floating line hard to fish, as it sinks slowly at around 1 to 1.5 inches per second.

What weight fly line do I need?

Match the line to the rating on your rod, so a #6 rod takes a #6 line. Most UK trout anglers use a #5 to #7 line, with lighter lines for small rivers and heavier ones for big reservoirs and windy days.

What does WF mean on a fly line?

WF stands for weight forward. Most of the line's weight sits in the head at the front, which loads the rod quickly and helps you cast further than a double taper line.

What is the best budget fly line?

The Greys Platinum X Float is our Best Budget Fly Line at 8.1. It's a UK-designed tri-colour floating line with a slick, low-memory coating, and it comes in WF5 to WF8.

Final Thoughts

For most trout anglers, the Scientific Anglers Amplitude Smooth Trout GP is the floating line to buy, and the Greys Platinum X Float gets you a sound floating line for much less.

If you fish stillwaters, the Airflo Sixth Sense 2 Fast Intermediate and Sixth Sense 2 Sinking cover the depths a floating line can't, and the Booby Basher gets your flies down fast when the fish are deep.
