Greys Platinum X Intermediate Fly Line
Product Information
The Greys Platinum X Intermediate is a 105ft sinking fly line built for fishing just below the surface from the boat or the bank. Like the other sinking Platinum X lines, it uses an intermediate-density running line with an aggressive full-size heavy distance-casting taper.
A slick, smooth coating keeps memory low and gives a good feel in the hand, while the low-diameter running line helps distance casting. The line is twin-colour, and welded loops are fitted at either end.
It comes in WF6, WF7 and WF8 weights, all with the same 105ft overall length. Greys designed the line in the UK, and each one is supplied in eco-friendly packaging.
Greys Platinum X Intermediate Fly Line Review
A cheap intermediate earns its place if it casts well and lets you fish just under the surface without any fuss, and the Greys Platinum X Intermediate is built to do exactly that. It's a 105ft weight-forward line in WF6, WF7 and WF8, with an aggressive full-size heavy distance taper, a slim running line and welded loops at both ends. It was designed in the UK, and it's made for fishing from the boat or the bank.
For me, it suits reservoir and small-stillwater anglers who want a slow-sinking line for buzzers, nymphs and lures, and who'd rather spend the difference on flies. The build is plainer than the Airflo Sixth Sense 2 Fast Intermediate, but a twin-colour finish and a low-memory coating are welcome on a line this cheap.
Build & Coating
The Platinum X Intermediate is a straightforward line on the build side. Its slick, smooth coating is made to keep memory low, so it should come off the reel in fewer coils and feel good in the hand as you strip it back.
The finish is twin-colour, and welded loops are fitted at either end, which makes joining the backing and the leader quick and tidy.
Every size is 105ft long, and it comes in eco-friendly packaging. It's a UK design too, which I like, because UK stillwater fishing has its own demands, from long casts on big reservoirs to steady work on small fisheries in a cold wind.
To be fair, it isn't built to the same level as the Airflo Sixth Sense 2 Fast Intermediate, which has a low-stretch Power core that stays supple in cold weather. That's the main reason this mark sits a little lower than the rest.
For a budget intermediate, though, I think 7.9 is a fair reflection of a sound, simple line.
Casting & Turnover
So, how should it cast? The taper is an aggressive full-size heavy distance design, which means the line is heavier than the standard for its number.
That extra weight should load a fast-action rod quickly, with fewer false casts, and it's built for distance from the bank or the boat.
The running line is low in diameter, so it should shoot freely through the rings once the head is out. Like the other sinking Platinum X lines, the running line is intermediate density as well, so it sinks along with the head rather than sitting in the surface film.
On a slower or softer rod, a full-size heavy line can feel like too much, so I'd pair it with a medium-fast or fast rod. Is it as refined as the Sixth Sense 2 Fast Intermediate, with its long front taper for turning over a team of flies?
I don't think it is, but for straightforward distance work on a quick rod, the 8.0 feels right to me.
Presentation & Handling
An intermediate is all about fishing just under the surface, where it cuts through the wind ripple and keeps buzzers, nymphs and small lures out of the chop. That's exactly the job the Platinum X Intermediate is built for.
The slick, low-memory coating should help in the hand too, because a line that doesn't coil is easier to strip and less likely to knot round your feet.
The twin-colour finish is the one thing I'd weigh up. If your water is very clear and the trout are wary, the Scientific Anglers Wet Cel Intermediate Clear is clear all the way through and sinks at a steady 1.25ips, so it's the stealthier choice.
On a ripple, or with a bit of colour in the water, I doubt the Greys' finish will matter much.
For me, the handling is the stronger half of this mark, and I think 8.0 is fair for a budget line that should be easy to live with.
Is it good value for money?
Is it worth the money? I think so. It's one of the cheaper intermediate lines you can buy, and it's cheaper than both the Airflo Sixth Sense 2 Fast Intermediate and the Wet Cel Intermediate Clear.
You still get welded loops at both ends, a low-memory coating, a twin-colour finish and a full 105ft of line, which is pretty much everything you need from a first intermediate.
The Sixth Sense 2 is the more refined line, with a long front taper for teams of flies and a core that stays supple in the cold, while the Wet Cel gives you stealth in clear water. If those things matter to you, they're worth paying for.
If you just want a line to fish under the ripple, the Greys does the job for a lot less.
Overall, I'd recommend the Platinum X Intermediate to stillwater trout anglers on a budget who fish a fast-action rod, and to anyone adding a first intermediate to a floating line.
Pros
- Full-size heavy distance taper should load fast-action rods quickly
- Slick, smooth coating keeps memory low and handles well
- Welded loops at both ends for quick leader and backing changes
- Low-diameter intermediate running line should shoot well on long casts
- One of the cheaper intermediates, at 105ft in WF6, WF7 and WF8
Cons
- Twin-colour finish is less stealthy than the clear Wet Cel Intermediate
- Full-size heavy taper may feel too much on slower, softer rods
