Product Information

Westin's W6 Winter Suit pairs a jacket with bibs for cold days and tough terrain. It is waterproof and windproof, with SORONA Aura insulation for sub-zero conditions.

The jacket is 228T nylon Taslon with a PU coating, while the bib has 600D Oxford reinforcement. Soft polyester lining runs throughout, and chest pockets have warm lining.

The jacket has 200gsm body padding and 160gsm sleeves, while the bib uses 160gsm padding. The suit comes in S, M, L, XL, XXL and 3XL.

Westin W6 Winter Suit Ink Black Review

Open water in winter is where a suit really earns its keep, because the wind comes across a reservoir, an estuary or a boat deck with nothing to stop it. The Westin W6 Winter Suit Ink Black is built for those days, pairing a waterproof, windproof jacket and bib with SORONA Aura insulation for sub-zero conditions and a 20,000mm hydrostatic head.

So, what sets it apart? The fabric lets up to 10,000 grams of moisture per square metre escape, which matters for lure anglers who walk and cast all day, and the bib is reinforced with tough 600D Oxford fabric.

It's a big spend, but for predator and boat anglers who fish hard through the coldest months, I think it's a superb suit.

How well is it built?

The jacket is made from 228T 100% nylon Taslon with a PU coating. Taslon is a textured nylon with a soft, almost cotton-like feel, and the 228T figure points to a dense weave, so it should shrug off the scrapes of a boat gunwale or a rocky bank.

A soft 100% polyester lining runs throughout.

The bib is where the build really stands out, because it's reinforced with 600D Oxford fabric backed by a TPU membrane.

That's a heavy, hard-wearing fabric, the sort you'd find on a good rucksack, and it's exactly what you want on a bib that takes wear when you kneel in a boat or sit on a wet seat. The bib closes with a YKK two-way zip, and YKK zips have a strong name for lasting.

For me, it's a seriously tough suit that's built to last many winters on the water, and I think the build is as good as thermal suits get.

Weather Protection

Rain shouldn't trouble you much, because a 20,000mm hydrostatic head is about as high as thermal suits go, and it should keep you dry through prolonged heavy rain and while you sit on a wet boat seat or kneel on a soaked bank.

The suit is windproof too, and that's the big one for boat anglers, because a cold wind over open water strips heat far faster than still air.

Breathability is strong as well, at up to 10,000 grams of moisture per square metre. That helps when you're walking a long bank with a lure rod, as sweat can escape before it chills you once you stop.

The removable hood has a wired peak to keep rain off your face, and the bib's YKK two-way zip has a wind shield to stop draughts creeping in at the front. Can a thermal suit do much more against the weather?

I don't think so, and it's the one I'd want on a boat in a cold February wind.

Comfort & Fit Rating

Warmth comes from SORONA Aura insulation, a synthetic fibre fill that holds a layer of warm air around you, and the suit is built for sub-zero conditions.

The jacket has 200gsm padding in the body and 160gsm in the sleeves, so your core gets the most warmth while your arms stay a little freer for casting and working lures. The bib uses 160gsm SORONA Aura padding.

The handwarmer chest pockets have a soft, warm lining, which is a nice touch when your hands are wet and cold from unhooking a pike or pulling up an anchor.

The soft polyester lining throughout should feel comfortable over a base layer too, and it should slide easily over a fleece mid-layer as you pull the jacket on.

Sizes run S, M, L, XL, XXL and 3XL, which is a slightly narrower range than the Fox Rage Winter Suit, as that goes up to XXXXLarge. Overall, I think it's a superbly warm, well-balanced suit to fish in, whether you're casting all day or sitting over deadbaits.

Is it good value for money?

There's no getting away from the cost, as it's one of the dearer thermal suits you can buy, so it isn't an impulse purchase.

What you get for that is a 20,000mm head, 10,000 grams of breathability, SORONA Aura padding and 600D Oxford reinforcement, which is a full set of serious specs in one suit, and the reinforced bib should keep it going for years.

If you fish from a boat in winter and want flotation built in, the Westin W4 Flotation Suit Jetset Lime is the one to look at instead, as it adds certified buoyancy.

If you mostly sit behind rods on a sheltered bank, the Fox Rage Winter Suit is a simpler fleece-lined option that should still keep you warm.

Overall, I'd recommend the W6 to predator anglers who fish big reservoirs and rivers through the winter, to boat anglers facing wind over open water and to anyone who fishes in sub-zero cold. For them, I think it's worth every penny.
