Preston Innovations Celcius Suit Review
A winter match means hours sat on a peg with the wind in your face and your hands in the water, and the Preston Innovations Celcius Suit is designed with that kind of day in mind. It's a three-quarter-length jacket and a bib and brace, insulated with Holofil and finished with a waterproof outer skin, a detachable wire-peaked hood and Velcro storm cuffs.
For me, the details are what make it a match suit. The knees have an extra-durable woven-fabric layer, the seat has a reinforced pad and the collar and pockets are fleece-lined, so it's built around the way match anglers actually sit and fish.
With sizes from Small to XXXX Large, I think it's a superb winter suit for the match angler.
How well is it built?
The Celcius is reinforced throughout, and the two areas that take the most punishment on a match suit get extra attention.
An additional layer of extra-durable woven fabric protects the knees, and a reinforced pad covers the seat, which matters when you're shuffling on and off a seatbox all day or kneeling on a wet platform to net a fish.
The rest of the build backs that up. The main zip is storm-sealed, the cuffs are Velcro storm cuffs and the hood is detachable with a wire peak, so you can shape it over your eyes or leave it in the bag on a dry day.
The bib and brace has adjustable straps and an adjustable waist.
For me, it's a very well-made suit that's clearly been thought through by match anglers. The Matrix Therma-Foil Winter Suit is its closest rival, with a heat-reflective foil lining, but for durability on the box I think the Celcius's reinforced knee and seat are hard to fault.
Weather Protection
So, will it keep a match angler dry? The outer skin is waterproof, and it's built to cover the damper days of a match season, with a storm-sealed main zip that keeps rain and wind out at the front of the jacket.
Velcro storm cuffs close the wrists, and the high, fleece-lined collar keeps a cold wind off your neck.
The detachable wire-peaked hood is a real plus. A wire peak holds its shape, so you can bend it to shield your eyes from the rain while you watch a float tip, and you can take the hood off altogether when the sun comes out.
To be fair, if you fish in the open through long spells of heavy rain, the Daiwa Two Piece Quilted Suit, with its 20,000mm hydrostatic head, is built for that.
Most match anglers put a brolly up when the weather really turns, though, and I think the Celcius gives them sound protection for the rest of the day.
Comfort & Fit Rating
Comfort is where the Celcius really stands out. Holofil is a hollow-fibre insulation, so each fibre holds tiny pockets of air, and trapped warm air is what keeps you warm on a cold peg.
Fleece lines the collar and the pockets, so your hands have somewhere warm to go between bites.
The three-quarter-length jacket is ideal for match fishing. It's long enough to cover the seat and the small of your back when you're sitting on the box, but short enough that it shouldn't bunch up on your lap or get in the way of a side tray.
The bib and brace rides high at the back, with adjustable straps and an adjustable waist, and the reinforced seat pad adds a tougher layer for a full match on the box.
Sizes run from Small to XXXX Large, so bigger anglers are well catered for. I think it's one of the most comfortable match suits you can wear.
Is it good value for money?
What does the money get you? It's a mid-priced winter suit, and the money buys you Holofil insulation, a three-quarter jacket, reinforced knees and seat, a detachable wire-peaked hood and fleece-lined pockets and collar.
That's a well-rounded package for anyone who fishes matches through the winter, whether on commercials, canals or rivers.
The Matrix Therma-Foil Winter Suit is the obvious alternative, with a heat-reflective foil lining and a 5,000mm fabric, and it's a very good suit. Both are warm, well-thought-out match suits, and I'd pick the Celcius for its tough knee and seat and its wire-peaked hood.
If you mostly fish carp from a bivvy, a bank suit like the Avid Arctic-Series Winter Suit is built more for that style.
Overall, I'd recommend the Preston Innovations Celcius Suit to match anglers who fish right through the winter, sit on a seatbox for hours and want warmth, a tidy three-quarter jacket and reinforcement where it counts.
