How well is it built?

So Sonik have always been about packing in features at sensible price points, and the Gizmo 2 is a proper evolution of that philosophy. at a comparable price for a two-alarm set with receiver and integrated bivvy light, they've put together something that genuinely punches above its weight.

The biggest improvement over the original Gizmo is those illuminated snag ears. The frosted finish lights up way brighter than before, which was the main gripe people had with Gen 1.

Even in bright daylight during testing, the blue LEDs were clearly visible, which is a genuine achievement.

Beyond looking distinctive, these ears do the job of preventing your rod being pulled off during violent takes, and the rubber inlays grip securely without any risk of damage to your blanks.

The sealed case construction proved its worth when I accidentally dropped one alarm into the margin. Despite bubbles coming up from the case as it went under, the alarm worked perfectly once I fished it out. That's genuine waterproofing you can trust, not just marketing claims.

I also love the intelligent hard case on/off system. There are no power buttons anywhere on the alarm, you simply remove the protective hard case to turn it on, replace it to turn it off.

This eliminates any chance of accidentally leaving alarms switched on during transit and flattening batteries, which has caught me out with other systems before.

How good is bite detection?

The Gizmo 2 provides clear audio differentiation between forward runs and drop-backs. Forward takes produce a single continuous tone, whilst drop-backs create two shorter bursts of beeps.

This audible feedback means you instantly understand what type of indication you're receiving without needing to look at the alarm, which is crucial when you're scrambling to get your boots on in the dark.

The dial controls for volume, tone, and sensitivity are straightforward and well-positioned. Everything is clearly labelled and easy to adjust even with cold hands or in darkness.

The volume range is comprehensive, from complete silence through to seriously loud, whilst the tone adjustment lets you find the perfect frequency that suits your ears and cuts through wind noise.

During testing, the differentiation between take types was clear and consistent. There's no ambiguity about what's happening at the business end, which matters when seconds count.

What are the settings and features like?

The speaker has been upgraded from the previous model, and you can tell straight away. The tone range goes from a lovely low old-school rumble right through to a piercing high pitch that'll wake you from the deepest sleep.

Audio quality is crisp throughout the range, with genuine punch that cuts through wind and weather.

The 'F' function button activates an intelligent mute mode that's genuinely useful. Press it once and the snag ears flash to confirm mute is active.

You can then adjust your rigs, set up bobbins, or make changes to your setup without the constant bleeping that annoys both you and nearby anglers.

After a preset time, the alarm automatically returns to live mode, or you can press the function button again to reactivate it manually.

Double-press the 'L' light button and you activate the night glow function.

This creates a very dim glow from the LEDs in your chosen colour, subtle enough that it's barely visible in daylight but perfect for locating your alarms in complete darkness without destroying your night vision.

It's the kind of thoughtful feature that shows Sonik understands real fishing situations.

But it's the integrated bivvy light that makes the Gizmo 2 properly stand out. The included bivvy light automatically syncs with your alarm heads and can operate in two modes: manual on/off like a standard bivvy light, or automatic illumination triggered by your alarms.

In automatic mode, when an alarm triggers, the bivvy light illuminates in the colour matching that specific alarm head. A central indicator shows clearly which rod has received indication, even if you're half-asleep.

The brightness can be adjusted across six levels, whilst the delay setting controls how long the light stays on after activation. The 2000mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery charges via USB-C, which is brilliantly convenient with modern power banks.

The light can mount magnetically or via the hook underneath, giving flexible installation options in any bivvy setup.

The receiver is genuinely impressive for the price point. The simple on/off switch at the top makes operation foolproof, whilst the four multi-colour LEDs automatically sync to your alarm head colours.

Whatever colour you set on each alarm is instantly reflected on the corresponding LED window on the receiver.

Six volume levels plus complete silence with vibration-only mode provide comprehensive control. The vibration function is strong enough to feel reliably in your pocket, making silent operation genuinely practical.

The receiver also indicates drop-backs versus forward runs through LED flashing patterns, maintaining that differentiation even when you're away from the rods.

Is it good value for money?

At a comparable RRP for the 3+1+1 set (three alarms, receiver, bivvy light), or a competitive price for a 2+1+1 configuration, the Gizmo 2 delivers remarkable value. Individual alarm heads retail at a comparable price, whilst the receiver is a competitive price.

When you consider what's included, improved illuminated snag ears, upgraded speaker, intelligent features, comprehensive receiver, and integrated bivvy light, the Gizmo 2 competes with alarm systems costing significantly more.

Many manufacturers charge separately for bivvy light integration, so having it bundled as standard at this price point is a genuine bonus.
