Fox RX Plus Alarm Review
How well is it built?
When Fox brought back the RX name, expectations were sky-high. The original Micron RX Digitals are still considered by many to be the ultimate bite alarm, with countless units still in active service decades later.
The RX Plus represents Fox's attempt to honour that legacy while bringing in everything they've learned from the NTX-R range.
Having tested these extensively, I can say they've nailed it. Fox hasn't tried to reinvent the wheel here. They've taken the already excellent NTX-R platform and refined it with genuinely useful improvements.
The instantly recognisable Micron shape remains, though the profile is noticeably slimmer and more streamlined. There are no garish graphics or unnecessary embellishments. These are beautifully understated alarms that look every bit as premium as they perform.
What really impresses me is how Fox has managed to pack in more technology without increasing the size or complexity. The integrated snag ears are deeper than the NTX-R, yet there's been no increase in overall height.
The twin LEDs sit right at the top of each ear, and the rod-friendly rubber inlays provide exceptional grip without any risk of damage to your blanks.
The free-standing receiver is genuinely impressive. It's wrapped in a grippy rubber finish that feels robust enough to survive years of being knocked about in your tackle bag.
The larger LED windows are visible from both the front and top, and the Colour-Sync function automatically matches the colours you've set on each alarm head.
How good is bite detection?
The detection system deserves particular praise. Fox's D-Tec Plus sensing uses a CNC machined Tru-Run roller wheel with significantly increased clearance from the body.
This improved drainage design reduces the chances of the roller freezing up in extreme cold, which has been a weakness of roller-based systems in the past.
The sensitivity range is exceptional, detecting line movement as minimal as 2.8mm at the maximum setting. That's three times more sensitive than the NTX-R. But sensitivity alone isn't the whole story.
Fox has implemented what they call See-Saw elimination, which is genuinely clever. The alarm only sounds if the line travels the specified distance in one direction within two seconds.
If it moves forward then immediately drops back, like line does in windy conditions, the distance counter resets to zero. This substantially reduces false triggering without compromising bite detection.
What are the settings and features like?
The control layout is brilliantly intuitive. Three numbered dials on the right adjust volume, tone, and sensitivity with precise, indexed clicks.
Volume can go completely silent for receiver-only operation, while the tone dial offers eight settings from a low rumble to a high-pitched scream that cuts through wind noise perfectly.
On the left, a toggle switch controls power and mode selection. One click turns it on, a second click activates night mode, which makes the LEDs glow faintly in your chosen colour. It's a lovely feature that eliminates the need for isotopes while maintaining excellent visibility.
On the battery cover, you'll find buttons to change LED colour and adjust brightness independently for day and night modes.
The bivvy light function is genuinely useful rather than just a gimmick. It only activates after three quick bite triggers to prevent false alarms from liners, then fades smoothly to full brightness while your alarm continues sounding.
Once the run stops, it fades out over five seconds unless more indications are received. It's perfectly calibrated for real fishing situations and eliminates the fumbling around for a head torch when you're rushing to get your boots on.
You can toggle vibration on or off via a switch on the rear, and there's also a silent mode that allows full receiver function without any sound output.
The range test function lets you check whether the receiver is picking up your alarms at any given distance, which is handy on venues with lots of trees or banking between you and your swim.
Is it good value for money?
The three-alarm presentation set with receiver undercuts the equivalent NTX-R setup at launch, which represents outstanding value given the improvements.
You're getting cutting-edge technology, exceptional build quality, and a proven track record from one of the most respected names in carp fishing.
If you're trying to decide between the RX Plus and other premium alarm systems, we've put together a comprehensive guide to the best bite alarms that compares all the top models to help you make the right choice for your fishing.
The only reason it sits as a close second to the Delkim is personal preference around the vibration sensing system versus roller wheel detection. Some anglers simply prefer how Delkim's piezo system responds, while others favour the traditional feel of Fox's roller wheel setup.
Both are absolutely top-tier alarm systems that won't let you down when it matters most.
Pros
- Outstanding value, undercutting the equivalent NTX-R setup despite the improvements
- See-Saw elimination virtually eliminates false alarms while maintaining excellent sensitivity
- Deeper snag ears with rubber inlays provide exceptional rod security without external ears
- Colour-Sync technology makes identification instant and effortless
- Bivvy light function is brilliantly executed and genuinely useful in practice
Cons
- Roller wheel system may freeze in the most extreme frosts, though greatly improved
- Premium price point may stretch budgets for occasional anglers
Features and Specifications
| Feature | What this means |
|---|---|
| D-Tec Plus Sensing System | Fox's advanced digital detection uses a precision CNC machined roller wheel to detect line movement accurately. The increased clearance around the roller and improved drainage reduces false alerts and prevents freezing in extreme cold. |
| See-Saw Elimination | Intelligent technology that only triggers an alert if the line moves a set distance in one direction within 2 seconds. This virtually eliminates false alarms caused by wind or water movement while maintaining excellent bite detection. |
| Ultra-Sensitive Detection (2.8mm) | At maximum sensitivity, the alarm detects line movement as small as 2.8mm—three times more sensitive than the previous NTX-R. Perfect for detecting the most tentative takes from wary fish. |
| Twin Multi-Colour LEDs | Two LEDs positioned at the top of each snag ear, offering six colour options (Red, Green, Blue, Orange, Purple, White). The twin LEDs provide better visibility from multiple angles compared to single LED systems. |
| Colour-Sync Technology | Change LED colours via a button on the battery cover, and the receiver automatically syncs to match. This makes it instantly clear which rod has signalled, even from a distance or inside your bivvy. |
| Day and Night Modes | Toggle between modes using the power switch. Night mode makes the LEDs glow faintly in your chosen colour, providing excellent visibility without the brightness of day mode or the need for isotopes. |
| Vari-Bright LED Adjustment | Three brightness settings available for both day and night modes independently. Adjust via a button on the battery cover to suit different light conditions, from bright sunshine to overcast days or darkness. |
| Indexed Ergonomic Controls | Three numbered dials control volume (8 levels), tone (8 settings), and sensitivity (8 levels). The indexed clicks make adjustments precise and repeatable, so you can dial in your preferred settings every time. |
| Silent Mode | Turn volume down completely for silent operation where only the receiver sounds. Perfect for busy venues where you want to be considerate to nearby anglers or when fishing at close range. |
| Deeper Integrated Snag Ears | Even deeper than the NTX-R, with no increase in alarm height. The rod-friendly rubber inlays provide exceptional grip for secure rod placement during extreme conditions or violent takes, without needing external snag ears. |
| Bivvy Light Function | The receiver illuminates after three quick bite triggers, fading smoothly to full brightness and staying on while the alarm continues. It then fades out over 5 seconds after the run stops. This prevents false triggering from liners while giving you light exactly when you need it. |
| Vibration Alert Function | Toggle vibration on or off via a switch on the rear of the receiver. Combine with silent mode for completely discreet operation where the receiver only vibrates in your pocket without making any sound. |
| Anti-Theft Alarm | If an alarm head is turned off unexpectedly, the receiver will alert you by beeping and flashing. Provides security at busy venues where theft might be a concern, giving you peace of mind about your valuable equipment. |
| Range Test Function | Flick an alarm off and on quickly, and it will start beeping. Walk away from your swim until it stops to check whether you're still within range. Essential for venues with obstacles like trees or banking between you and your bivvy. |
| Battery Life Indication Display | When you turn the receiver on, LED colours show battery status: 4 green = full, 3 green = good, 2 orange = getting low, 1 red = needs replacing. Takes the guesswork out of battery management. |
| Free-Standing Receiver Design | Stable base allows the receiver to sit securely on a bivvy table or bucket lid without toppling over. The soft-grip rubber casing is comfortable in hand and provides excellent grip even with wet hands. |
| Weatherproof Sealed Case | Fully sealed and weatherproof construction protects the internal electronics from rain, spray, and condensation. These alarms will keep working reliably regardless of the weather conditions you face. |
| Ultra-Long Range Digital Signal | Fully digital circuitry provides stronger range performance than the NTX-R. The receiver will pick up signals reliably even at extreme distances or through obstacles like dense vegetation or banking. |
