How well is the Map X4 Barrow MK2 built?

The frame on the MAP X4 MK2 is reassuringly solid for its size. It uses welded steel with simple, no-nonsense fittings that feel more durable than the price point might suggest. When I first set it up, I was impressed with how little play there was in the joints.

The handle brackets lock firmly into place, and the entire barrow feels stable under load, even with a full seatbox and extra kit strapped on. After several sessions in wet conditions, the paint finish has held up well and hasn’t shown any signs of flaking or rust.

The wheels, though not pneumatic, roll smoothly and feel tough enough to handle regular use on both hard paths and grass.

How does it handle on the bank?

I’ve used this barrow across several venues, from flat commercials to sloped gravel tracks, and the handling surprised me. The four-wheel layout gives it natural balance, so even when fully loaded, I didn’t feel like I had to constantly correct or shift my grip.

The adjustable handles are a standout feature.

Being able to extend them out gave me better posture while pushing and reduced the strain on longer walks. Turning on tighter swims is manageable thanks to the compact width, and I never once felt like it would tip when pushing sideways across a slope.

That’s the difference a four-wheel design can make, and it’s a game-changer if you’re tired of barrows that feel top-heavy or awkward.

How much can it carry and store?

For a barrow of this footprint, the X4 MK2 offers excellent carrying space. The extending main frame is simple to adjust, and it let me tailor the setup depending on whether I was doing a day session or carrying a full match kit.

With the frame fully extended, I can comfortably carry all the gear I need to my peg with ease.

The drop-in rear bag is handy for extra bait or waterproofs, though I found it a touch small for long-session kit. Where this barrow could improve is the addition of side arms or bag rails as standard.

Without them, you’ll need to stack carefully or rely on bungees to keep things tight. That said, it’s still one of the most adaptable non-powered frames I’ve tested, and the fold-down size makes it ideal for anglers who need space-saving storage at home or in the car.  

Is it good value for money?

At around £170, the MAP X4 MK2 offers brilliant value when you consider what you’re getting. You’re not just buying a barrow, you’re getting a modular transport system that adapts to your session and venue.

I’ve tested other trolleys in this price bracket and very few offer an extending frame, adjustable handles and a full four-wheel layout.

When you add in the inclusion of a proper storage case and rear bag, the overall package is very competitive. It won’t match the load capacity or luxury of premium power barrows, but it’s not trying to.

This is built for practicality, reliability and ease of use, and in that respect, it delivers far more than its price tag would suggest.
