5 Things To Know

  1. The external exoskeleton frame sits on the outside of the skin, so there are no poles running through the middle and the internal space stays clear.
  2. It is a quick-erect design built around a centre block and pole sequence, so it goes up in a set order.
  3. The footprint is sized for one angler's full overnight setup, with room for the bedchair, luggage and tackle.
  4. The extended front profile adds extra cover around the doorway.
  5. It comes as a complete shelter system with the front panel, groundsheet and support parts included.

Avid Exo+ Bivvy Review

The Avid Exo+ Bivvy is a one-man-plus shelter built around speed, with Avid's patented self-locking boss and self-locating elbows doing most of the work when you pitch it. It's made from blackout EX fabric with a 20,000mm hydrostatic head, and at 270cm wide, 195cm deep and 140cm high it gives a single angler plenty of room for a full session without going up to a two-man footprint.

What makes the plus version stand out for me is how much comes in the bag, with a storm cap, a full mozzie front, a heavy-duty groundsheet and two Cam Lock storm poles all included. It's a premium bivvy and the boss takes a little learning, but for overnighters and longer carp sessions I think it's one of the strongest one-man systems around.

How well is it built?

Avid have built the Exo+ around an external frame, with a patented boss at the centre and self-locating elbows on the arms, and that keeps the inside of the bivvy clear of poles.

The fabric is 100% polyester with a blackout EX finish, so it's darker inside on bright mornings and helps with concealment, which I like on pressured waters.

The shape is the other big plus, because the back is high and flat rather than sloping away, so you get more headroom and more of the floor is usable, and there are two internal mesh pockets for the small bits you want to find in the dark.

Avid Cams are used throughout, the elbows have fixing points for the skull cap, and the carry bag has its own zipped peg pocket, a storm pole holster, a groundsheet pocket and inner bivvy clips. It's the sort of detail I'd expect at this level, and Avid haven't skimped on it.

Stability & Weather Resistance

The 20,000mm hydrostatic head is a top-end figure for a carp bivvy, and the supplied storm cap adds a second layer over the top for extra insulation and protection.

Avid have also given the Exo+ an adjustable peak with more coverage, so you shouldn't need to buy an extra peak or wrap to keep rain off the entrance.

For holding it down in a blow, you get two heavy-duty Cam Lock storm poles, a fabric tension strap, and webbing adjusters with elastic loops on every pegging point, so you can get the whole skin properly tight. I think that's a solid storm setup straight out of the bag.

Airflow comes from four camo mozzy vents, and the front has a solid infill panel with two door options in solid or camo mozzy mesh, plus a full mozzie front, so you can shut it right up in bad weather or open it out on a warm night.

Ease Of Setup & Portability

Speed is the whole point of the Exo+, because Avid's patented boss locks itself as the frame goes up and the elbows locate on their own, so there's less fiddling with poles and joints than on a traditional bivvy.

Avid rate it among the fastest shelters of its kind to pitch and pack away, and the design backs that up on paper.

To be fair, it isn't foolproof the first time, as at least one owner has found the centre block slow to click into place. I'd practise pitching it at home before relying on it in the rain, and once you know the sequence it should be quick.

The groundsheet has a letterbox-style flap sewn in, and everything packs into a bespoke bag with separate pockets for the pegs, storm poles and groundsheet. It's a full system rather than a light day shelter, so for me it's one for the barrow rather than a long walk.

Is it good value for money?

The Exo+ is a premium bivvy, costing much the same as the Nash Titan T2 and Fox Frontier II and a fair bit more than the Nash Titan Hide XL Camo Pro.

Where it earns its price is the kit list, because the storm cap, full mozzie front, groundsheet and two storm poles are all included, and those are the extras that often push the cost up on other bivvies.

The XL PVC door and the full inner dome are sold separately, so if you want a winter setup with a clear front or an inner, budget for those on top. If you need room for a second angler or a lot more kit, the bigger Avid Carp EXO 2 Man Bivvy System is the step up.

It suits carp anglers who fish overnighters and longer solo sessions, want a fast-pitching bivvy with serious weather protection, and are happy to barrow it to the swim.

  • Full mozzie front, groundsheet and two Cam Lock storm poles included
  • Adjustable peak gives extra cover over the entrance
