Fox Explorer Barrow Review

The Fox Explorer Barrow is one of the most versatile non-powered barrows I’ve used for carp fishing. Whether I’m out for a few hours or staying the night, this compact frame handles it without feeling cramped or overloaded.

The extendable front rack is a smart piece of design. When I’ve fished without a bedchair, I’ve retracted it and kept the centre of gravity close for easy pushing. On longer sessions, I’ve fully extended it to make room for extra kit, and the balance remained spot on.

It’s a brilliant choice for anglers who want something modular, easy to transport, and totally compatible with Fox's popular Camolite luggage range.

How well is the Fox Explorer Barrow built?

The Explorer doesn’t cut corners in terms of construction. The hi-tensile steel frame feels strong without being overly heavy, and after regular use across gravel tracks and muddy margins, there’s no warping or weakness anywhere.

The welds on the main load points are tidy and reinforced, and the drop-in bag rails and front extension slots lock into place with zero play.

The Fox wheel design also impresses, it detaches easily, yet the quick-release system feels more secure than similar barrows in this price range. It’s worth noting that the central camo under bag has good structure to it, so it doesn’t sag or flop when filled.

Fox have clearly put thought into real-world usability, and the result is a tidy, durable bit of kit.

How does it handle on the bank?

One of the main reasons I rate this barrow so highly is how easy it is to push around. Even with a full day’s gear loaded up, the Explorer remains light on its feet thanks to its centralised balance and compact geometry.

The shape of the handles made a surprising difference too.

They’re moulded in a way that suits a natural pushing grip, so there’s less fatigue on your wrists during longer walks. The swivelling mud feet keep it upright when parked on soft banks or awkward swims.

When moving between pegs or loading up quickly to move, this barrow saves time.

It handles turning tight corners and narrow paths well, and the balance stays stable even when navigating downhill sections.

How much can it carry and store?

For such a compact frame, the Explorer offers excellent storage options. I’ve packed everything you need for an overnighter without needing to force anything. The under-barrow bag is well placed and accessible from the side, ideal for waterproofs, spare clothing, or food.

The mesh side pockets are genuinely useful too, especially for stashing gear you may need to access quickly. If you already own Camolite luggage, this barrow really comes into its own. Every item fits neatly within the frame without wasted space.

While it might not rival three-wheel barrows for max load capacity, it’s easily enough for any standard carp session.

Is it good value for money?

At just over £200, the Explorer sits in a competitive bracket. But what sets it apart is how well it transitions between session types. It’s two barrows in one - a tidy day barrow that quickly converts for longer stints.

Fox’s choice to include the drop-in camo bag and universal straps out of the box also adds value.

You’re not having to source extra fittings to make it usable, and the compatibility with the rest of the Camolite range means you can build your setup over time.

With an overall score of 8.6, this is one of the best carp barrows for short to mid-length sessions, especially if you're an angler who likes to stay mobile and efficient.
