The Spomb X Reel product video - YouTube
The Spomb X is a reel built for one job, and that's casting Spombs and other baiting devices over and over again. It was designed from the ground up in the UK rather than adapted from a big pit, with machine-cut aluminium and brass gearing, a sealed drag, rotor and body, and a 25kg Quick Clutch drag that stops the spool slipping on the cast.
It's quick on the retrieve too, with a 5.2:1 ratio bringing back 124cm of line per turn, and it holds 300m of 0.18mm braid. It's dearer than the Daiwa Superspod and the other spod reels around it, but for anglers who spod heavily and want a reel that's built to take it, I think it's the one to beat.
Spomb have clearly thought about what a baiting reel goes through.
Casting a fully loaded Spomb again and again puts a lot of strain on the gears, so the Spomb X uses machine-cut aluminium and brass gearing, a high-strength combination that's there for long-term durability rather than saving a few grams.
The drag, rotor and body are all sealed as well, and I think that's one of the most sensible features on the reel. Spodding is wet, messy work, with braid coming back covered in water and bait residue on every wind, and sealing keeps that grit away from the parts that matter.
At 603g it's a solid reel, and it only has 3+1 bearings, which looks modest next to some big pits. To be fair, on a spod rod I'd rather have strong gearing and good seals than a long bearing count, and the black finish with red Spomb logos looks smart on the rod.
Speed is what you want from a spod reel, and the Spomb X has it. The 5.2:1 gear ratio brings back 124cm of line per turn of the handle, which means less winding between casts and more time getting the bait out where you want it.
The spool holds 300m of 0.18mm braid, which is plenty for spodding at range, and slow oscillation is there to lay that braid neatly so it comes off cleanly on the next cast.
Tidy braid lay matters a lot on a spod reel, because a loose loop on a heavy cast can soon turn into a crack-off.
The line control details are where you can see the specialist thinking.
There are dual soft-sprung clips with line-safe surrounds for clipping up, and a rotor brake and no-return ramp that are there to stop the bail closing by accident during the cast, which is exactly what you don't want with a loaded Spomb in the air.
The 25kg Quick Clutch drag is the headline feature for me. It's a carbon-matrix drag, and its job is to stop the spool slipping when you're putting everything into a cast with a heavy baiting device, because any slip on the cast costs you distance and accuracy.
The quick adjustment is just as useful. You can go from locked-up casting tension to a lighter setting for normal line control without lots of turns of the knob, and it's just as easy to set it back up again before the next cast.
It's sealed too, so the carbon-matrix drag is protected from the water and bait mess that comes back on the braid every time you wind in.
The Daiwa Superspod and Emblem Spod both have very good drags, but for a reel that will only ever be used for baiting, I'd put this one right alongside them and it's the drag I'd pick for heavy Spombs.
The Spomb X is the dearest spod reel in this group, costing a good chunk more than the Daiwa 23 Superspod 45 SCW, the Daiwa Emblem Spod and the Shimano Aerlex XTC Spod 14000.
That's why its value score sits below its other scores, because those reels do the job very well for less money.
What the extra buys you is a reel designed only for baiting, with sealed internals, aluminium and brass gearing, a 25kg drag and the bail protection features, rather than a general reel adapted for spodding. If you spod a lot every session, I think that focus is worth paying for.
It suits carp anglers who bait heavily with Spombs, fish longer sessions where the spod rod gets a lot of use, and want a dedicated reel built to take the punishment, rather than an occasional spodder who'd be well served by something cheaper.
| Feature | What this means |
|---|---|
| Purpose-Built Spombing Design | Unlike general-purpose reels that are simply marketed as spod reels, this reel was designed from scratch specifically for casting Spombs and other baiting devices. Every component is built to handle the repeated heavy loads that spodding puts on a reel throughout a long session. |
| 25kg Quick Clutch Drag Carbon Matrix | A very high-resistance drag system rated to 25kg means the spool stays locked solid during the cast so you get zero slip, which is essential when you're punching out heavy, fully loaded Spombs at distance. The Quick Clutch lets you switch between locked and freespool quickly and easily between casts. |
| Aluminium Brass Combination Gearing | The internal gears are machine cut from a combination of high-strength aluminium and brass, which gives you a precise, smooth feel that holds up over years of heavy use. This is far more durable than the cheaper pressed or moulded gears you find in many budget spod reels. |
| Sealed Core Components | The drag, rotor and body are all sealed against water and debris getting inside. Spombing involves a lot of splashing and wet braid, so keeping grit and moisture out of the internals is key to keeping the reel smooth and reliable for longer. |
| Grease Port for Maintenance | A dedicated grease port lets you lubricate the internals without having to strip the reel down. A quick top-up now and then means the gears and bearings stay properly maintained, prolonging the life of the reel significantly with very little effort. |
| Slow Oscillation for Line Lay | The spool moves up and down slowly as you retrieve, laying the braid in a tight, even pattern. Good line lay reduces tangles and allows the braid to peel off smoothly on the cast, helping you hit your spot consistently at range. |
| Line Capacity: 300m of 0.18mm Braid | The spool is sized to hold 300 metres of 0.18mm braid, which is the typical diameter used for spodding. The fill level has been optimised so the braid sits at the right point on the spool, reducing the risk of frap-ups (loose loops flying off the spool and tangling during a cast) while still allowing maximum distance. |
| Dual Line Clips | Two soft-sprung line clips with line-safe surrounds let you clip up to a set distance so you can hit the same spot cast after cast. The soft spring and protective surrounds help prevent the braid from being damaged or weakened where it sits in the clip. |
| Rotor Brake and No-Return Ramp | These two features work together to stop the bail arm from accidentally closing mid-cast, which can cause a crack-off where the line snaps under the sudden shock load. A crack-off while spodding can mean losing your Spomb in the lake, so this is a genuinely important safety feature. |
| Weight: 603g | At 603g, this is a reasonably light reel given the heavy-duty build. Carbon reinforcement is used to keep the weight down without sacrificing strength, so your spod rod stays balanced and comfortable to cast repeatedly over many hours. |
| Bearings: 3+1 | Three stainless steel ball bearings plus one roller bearing give you a smooth, fluid retrieve. The roller bearing specifically handles the anti-reverse function, which means the handle does not kick back when you stop winding, keeping everything feeling tight and controlled. |
| UK Development | The reel was developed from the ground up in the UK by the Spomb team, meaning the design reflects real-world British carp fishing conditions and the specific demands of Spombing rather than being a generic overseas design with a spod-reel label added to it. |
