Sonik HeroX Spod Reel Review
The Sonik HeroX Spod Reel is a welcome surprise in the budget spod reel market. It’s built to handle the rigours of repeated spodding with surprising ease.
How well is the Sonik HeroX Spod Reel built?
The HeroX has a graphite body and rotor, keeping it lightweight (weighing in at 599g) but still feeling solid in the hand. The matt black finish and CNC-machined aluminium handle with a dark wood barrel grip give it a premium aesthetic.
Alongside this the gloss black spool adds a touch of class that helps compensate for the cost-saving graphite in the build.
Inside, the 5+1 ball bearings, instant anti-reverse, and wormshaft gearing combine to offer surprisingly smooth operation albeit slower than some premium models.
The build doesn't scream "bulletproof", but it's well-executed for its price bracket. The floating rotor line guard is a smart touch too, helping prevent wrap-unders during repetitive use.
Remember this is a budget spod reel that is two thirds of the price of some of the premium options and actually the build-quality is solid taking price into account.
How well does it cast and retrieve?
Casting is made easier thanks to the Heli Coil ultra-flat line lay, which ensures that the pre-loaded braid flows smoothly off the spool. The twin spring-loaded captive line clips hold securely and are easy to engage.
They are also made from metal and held rock solid in testing even after 30 minutes of some heavy spodding.
The retrieve rate is okay, pulling in up to 1.10m per handle turn via its 4.6:1 gear ratio. There are reels with faster ratios but again, for the price, it's more than adequate to do the job efficiently.
I also really like the fact that the reel seems to give you 'a lot of space' to operate which personally I find important in a decent spod reel.
By this I mean the oversized bailarm and wide-reaching handle make it simply more comfortable to use when casting and retrieving repeatedly.
How useful is the drag system?
I aksed myself before I got my hands on the HeroX, "What clutch would I expect on a spod reel for under £60?" The answer... A basic clutch that just does the job.
But what we get with the HeroX is a Quick-Torque drag system that offers easy front drag adjustment with a stated maximum drag of 18kg. While you’re unlikely to use the full drag strength when spodding, it’s solid and dependable if you need to double it up for other purposes.
In testing, I have to say I was impressed with the drag, again bearing in mind this is a budget spod reel. It engages smoothly, with no sticky spots under tension and can easily be turned with one finger.
Is it good value for money?
For around £50–£60 (including braid), the HeroX Spod Reel represents exceptional value, so much so that it's featured asthe best budget spod reel in our full guide .
It has the key features you need in a spod reel: a good drag, smooth line lay, decent build, and reliable line clips.
