5 Things To Know

  1. The Basix Kurv Shank has an aggressive in-turned eye and a curved shank to help the hook turn and hold.
  2. Its X gauge wire is stronger than the original pattern, and the black nickel finish is unobtrusive.
  3. No kicker or shrink tube is needed, which makes it practical for Spinner and IQ D-rig presentations.
  4. A long-lasting point is designed to stay useful across several fish before the hook needs replacing.
  5. Barbed and barbless versions come in sizes 2, 4, 6 and 8, with ten hooks in every packet.

Korda Basix Kurv Shank Hooks Review

Hooks are one bit of carp tackle where cheap can be a false economy, so it's refreshing to find a budget pattern as well thought out as the Korda Basix Kurv Shank. It has an aggressive in-turned eye and a curved shank, an X gauge wire that's stronger than the original Basix version and an unobtrusive black nickel finish.

So, what do you give up for the low price? Not a lot, I think. It's sold barbed or barbless in sizes 2, 4, 6 and 8, with 10 hooks in each packet, and it's designed to work straight from the packet on a Spinner or IQ D-rig, with no kicker or shrink tube needed.

Build quality 7.5/10
Sharpness 8.0/10
Hooking & Hold 8.0/10
Value for money 9.0/10

How well is it built?

The Basix range is Korda's budget line, and the build reflects that in a sensible way. The wire is X gauge, which makes it stronger than the original Basix Kurv Shank, so it should cope with a good carp on a typical club or day-ticket lake without opening out.

The finish is black nickel, an unobtrusive dark finish that suits most lake beds and won't flash in clear water.

It's a plainer finish than the PTFE coating on the Korda Wide Gape or the Thinking Anglers Curve Shank, and that's the main reason for the 7.5, as a slick coating helps a hook slide in and a premium pattern is more refined all round.

To be fair, a 7.5 still means a solid, well-made hook rather than a weak one. For the money, though, I think it's honest budget quality rather than a premium hook in disguise, and that's no bad thing.

Sharpness

How sharp can a budget hook be? The point is built to last, and it's designed to stay useful across several fish before you need to swap it.

That's a sensible priority for a hook you'll get through a lot of, because a point that stays sharp is worth more than one that's very fine out of the packet but folds on the first stone.

The Korda Kamakura Krank goes a step further, as it's sharpened after production to a finer point, and that's what you pay the extra for. For everyday fishing, a hard-wearing point on a well-tied rig should prick a carp's lip reliably.

I'd still check the point on your thumbnail after every fish and after any recast over gravel, and change it the moment it skids. Overall, an 8.0 is fair for a dependable, long-lasting point at this price.

Hooking & Hold

The aggressive in-turned eye and curved shank are what make a Kurv Shank work. Together they make the hook turn as a carp blows the bait out, so the point flips down and catches hold, and the curve then helps it settle into a firm hook hold.

The clever part is that you don't need to add a kicker or a piece of shrink tube to get that turning action, as it's designed to work straight from the packet.

That's why it suits a Spinner rig or an IQ D-rig so well, as both rely on the hook turning freely with nothing extra on the shank. It should also work well on a simple knotless-knot hair rig with a bottom bait.

It scores 8.0 rather than higher because it's a plain curve shank without the beaked point that helps a pattern like the Korda Choddy resist movement during the fight. For most open-water fishing, though, I think the hold should be very reliable.

Is it good value for money?

Is it worth it? This is where the Basix Kurv Shank really stands out. It's one of the cheapest packs of 10 carp hooks from a major brand, yet you still get barbed or barbless versions in sizes 2, 4, 6 and 8, which is the kind of choice you'd expect from a dearer pattern.

That spread covers a big bottom bait on a size 2 right down to a small pop-up on a size 8, and with barbless versions in every size, you won't be caught out on a barbless-only water.

For a newer carp angler stocking a box for terminal tackle, or anyone who gets through a lot of hooks, the savings soon add up.

Overall, I'd recommend the Basix Kurv Shank to newer carp anglers, club and day-ticket regulars and anyone tying Spinner or IQ D-rigs who wants a reliable curve shank without paying premium prices.

If you want a PTFE-coated hook, the Thinking Anglers Curve Shank costs more but adds that slick finish.
