How well is it built?

I'll be honest - these are quite large alarms compared to some competitors. But they need to be, given all the technology packed inside. The plastic casing feels absolutely fantastic, extremely hard-wearing and heavy-duty.

These genuinely feel like they'll last a lifetime, and Wolf backs that confidence with a three-year warranty as standard, extending to four years when you register the purchase. If that isn't confidence in your product, I don't know what is.

It almost goes without saying that these alarms are 100% weatherproof sealed. The build quality is exceptional, and knowing each unit is tested in the UK factory before dispatch provides real peace of mind.

If you do have any problems, you're dealing with someone on home ground rather than waiting for international support. The control dials feel secure and tight on the alarm head, preventing accidental adjustments - something that frustrated me with cheaper alarms in the past.

How good is bite detection?

The standout innovation here is the Variable Detection System, which combines both vibration sensing and roller wheel detection in a single alarm. Until recently, most alarms relied on either one system or the other.

The Qi combines both, and crucially, both can be set independently to give you maximum indication in any fishing situation. The vibration detection system is ultra-sensitive and works alongside the high-sensitivity roller wheel detection to ensure you never miss a take.

Having two independent detection methods means if one system picks up something the other missed, you're covered. It's like having a safety net that catches absolutely everything happening on the end of your line.

The sensitivity range is extraordinary. At maximum setting, the alarm registers just 2mm of line movement before giving an indication.

At minimum sensitivity, you get 100mm of movement, giving you a massive scope to tailor the alarms to any fishing situation from ultra-tight lines at range to slack line margin fishing.

One feature that deserves special mention is the Recoil Elimination system.

This measures line movement in both directions, so if you get a couple of millimetres of movement one way and then the same back again, it won't create an indication because it could just be wind or waves.

However, if you get more than a couple of millimetres in one direction, you instantly get an indication. This dramatically reduces false alerts while ensuring you never miss a genuine take.

What are the settings and features like?

Where things get really clever is with the indication system. You get three distinct audible tones: one for forward takes, one for drop backs, and a third tone specifically for vibration detection.

This means before you even look at the receiver or alarm head, you already know exactly what's happening in your swim. The LED system is equally intelligent - forward takes give you a constant LED, while drop backs give you a flashing LED.

If you're running everything on silent for stealth fishing, you still get all the information you need at a glance.

LED customisation is extensive - you've got seven different colour choices for the main LEDs across the top, and seven different choices for the night light, both adjustable individually.

So you could have green main LEDs with a blue night light if that's your preference. The LEDs are also brightness adjustable, and there's an automatic mode where a light sensor on the back automatically adjusts brightness to match environmental conditions.

The Hubb receiver is genuinely impressive, functioning as a control centre rather than just a receiving unit. It features an LCD display for navigating settings, a built-in torch, and can connect up to 24 devices (12 wireless and 12 wired).

The tone replication from paired alarms is exact, and you can adjust volume, sensitivity, and latching time directly from the receiver. Battery life is excellent with 500 hours in standby, and the 2km line-of-sight transmission range demonstrates the strength of the signal.

Connection between alarms and receiver is instantaneous with zero lag time.

Is it good value for money?

At a comparable price for the three-alarm presentation set with Hubb receiver, these represent excellent value in the premium category.

You're getting cutting-edge dual detection technology, British manufacturing and quality control, extensive customisation options, and a four-year warranty.
