Maver MV-R UK Pole Roller Review
Protecting an expensive pole is the whole point of a roller, and the Maver MV-R UK Pole Roller keeps things simple with soft-touch EVA on a single horizontal roller and two upright end rollers. It sits on four extendable legs secured with snap-lock fittings, and it comes with its own carrying case for the trip to and from the bank.
So, what kind of angler is it for? It's a straightforward single roller for pleasure and match anglers who want something kind to their pole and easy to pack away. It isn't the steadiest roller at the budget end, especially on an exposed peg, but the case and the soft EVA go a long way for the money.
How well is it built?
The MV-R UK is a simple frame with one long horizontal roller and an upright roller at each end, and both the roller and the uprights are covered in soft-touch EVA.
That's the right material for a pole roller, as it's soft enough not to mark a carbon pole and has enough grip to roll it rather than let it slide.
The four legs extend and lock with snap-lock fittings, which should be quick to use and easy to adjust with cold or wet hands. It also comes with a carrying case, a welcome extra at this level that keeps it from rattling about in the car with the rest of your gear.
It's a plainer frame than its sibling, the Maver MV-R X2 Flat Bed Roller, which adds spirit levels, a weigh-down hook and push-button opening and closing at both ends, and that's why build sits at 7.5. For a budget roller, though, I think it's put together sensibly.
Performance & Handling
The soft-touch EVA roller gives the pole a smooth, cushioned surface to run over as you ship back, and the two upright end rollers stop it rolling off either end. For one pole line fished straight out in front, that's pretty much all you need.
It's a single roller with no centre upright, so there's only one channel. If you want to double ship, the Leeda Concept GT Double Roller is set up for it for a little less money, and its two independent rollers give the pole more to work with.
For me, the EVA is the real strength. It's kind to the pole, and a well-padded roller should help stop the bounce that can unsettle your rig when you're shipping out to a long line. I think the 8.0 fits a roller that does the main job well without any extras.
Stability & Footing
Stability is the weaker side of the MV-R UK. The four extendable legs let you set the height and level it up on a bank that isn't flat, and the snap-lock fittings should hold each leg firmly once it's set, so the basics are covered.
It's a plain set-up for rough weather, though.
Compare it with the Maver MV-R X2 Flat Bed Roller, which has spirit levels and a weigh-down hook underneath, or the Preston Innovations Ignition Pole Roller with its 54cm base and four splayed telescopic legs, and I'd expect the MV-R UK to be the least planted of the three.
Would I trust it on an exposed peg in a strong side wind? I'd want to keep an eye on it. On a sheltered commercial or a calm day it should be fine, and the 7.5 reflects a roller that's steady enough in normal conditions but not one for the windiest pegs.
Is it good value for money?
So, is it worth buying? For the money, I think it is. You get soft EVA that protects your pole, quick snap-lock legs and a carrying case, and a case isn't something you can take for granted on a budget roller.
It costs a little more than the Preston Innovations Ignition Pole Roller, though, and the Ignition is the steadier of the two, so it's worth thinking about which matters more to you.
The Nytro SLS Pole Roller is cheaper again if you just want the basics, and if your pegs are often exposed to the wind, the Ignition is the safer choice.
For a lot of pleasure anglers, though, pole protection and a tidy case will matter more than outright stability, and that's where the MV-R UK makes sense.
Overall, I'd recommend the MV-R UK to pleasure anglers and club match anglers on sheltered commercials who want a roller that's gentle on their pole and packs away neatly in its own case.
