Fox Bite Alarms Explained: RX+ vs Micron MX vs Mini Micron X

Fox bite alarms explained: Micron RX+, Micron MX and Mini Micron X

Fox alarms are a common sight on UK carp banks, but with four Micron alarm lines, three of them with their own receivers, and a long list of sets, it's not always clear what you're paying for.

This page explains how the Fox range fits together, how the RX+, Micron MX and Mini Micron X compare, and which one suits you.

Let's get straight into it.

How the Fox Bite Alarm Range Is Structured

Every current Fox alarm is a roller-wheel alarm using Fox's D-Tec sensing. The range splits into four:

  • Micron RX+: the flagship, with D-Tec Plus sensing and the most settings.
  • Micron MX: the mid-range alarm, simple and dependable.
  • Mini Micron X: the budget alarm with its own receiver.
  • Mini Micron: a basic single head with no receiver.

Each family with a receiver has its own one, and you can buy single heads, rod sets or presentation sets.

The big differences are the number of settings, the sensitivity system and the receiver.

What Does the RX+ Actually Add?

Finer sensitivity, and fewer false bleeps

The RX+ has eight sensitivity settings, registering line movement from 90mm at the lowest setting down to 2.8mm at the highest. Except at maximum, the line has to travel the set distance in one direction within two seconds to trigger, which Fox says helps reduce false indication from wind and water movement. It also has See-Saw elimination.

More control

Eight volume levels (the lowest is silent), eight tones, and twin LEDs in six colours with day and night modes. Drop-back differential is there too, as it is on the Mini Micron X. Like the rest of the range it has a weatherproof sealed case, rated IPX5 against the Micron MX's IPX4.

A bigger system

The RX+ receiver syncs with up to eight RX+ heads and has an anti-theft alarm, a vibration alert and a bivvy-light function. Fox's RX+ Sensor, a motion sensor that triggers the receiver or an RX+ Light and gives an anti-theft warning, works within the same system.

Which Fox Alarm Should You Buy?

The RX+ is for anglers who fish long sessions in all weathers and want the most control. It's the flagship roller-wheel alarm in our best bite alarms guide; see our Fox RX+ review.

The Micron MX sits in the middle. It does the basics well: a dependable roller-wheel alarm with a bright 4mm LED, sold as single heads and sets with a receiver, for a lot less than the RX+.

The Mini Micron X is the budget way into a Fox set with a receiver, and it's the Budget Fox alarm set in our bite alarms guide (see our Mini Micron X review). The plain Mini Micron is a simple head for anglers who don't need a receiver.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Fox Micron MX bite alarms waterproof?

Fox describes all three as weatherproof, with sealed cases. Its manuals rate the RX+ and the Mini Micron X at IPX5 and the Micron MX at IPX4, so none is made to go under water. After heavy rain, Fox says to bring the heads indoors and take the hard case cover off so they dry out properly.

Do you need a receiver with Fox bite alarms?

No. Every Fox head works on its own. A receiver repeats bites to your bivvy or pocket, which helps at night or when you are away from the rods. The RX+, Micron MX and Mini Micron X sets all include one; the plain Mini Micron has no receiver option.

Which Fox receiver works with which alarm?

Each family has its own receiver. The RX+ receiver syncs with up to eight RX+ heads, the Micron MX sets come with the MX receiver, and the Mini Micron X sets come with the Mini Micron X receiver. Stay within one family when you add heads.

RX+ or Micron MX: which should you buy?

Buy the RX+ if you want the most control (eight volume, tone and sensitivity settings with See-Saw elimination), the IPX5 rating and the RX+ receiver with its anti-theft alarm. Buy the Micron MX if you want a reliable, simple roller-wheel alarm for a lot less.

Why are bite alarms so expensive?

You pay for the sensing system, sealed weatherproof cases, digital radio range and the number of settings. A flagship head like the RX+ adds all of those; a simple head like the Mini Micron keeps only the basics, which is why the price gap across the Fox range is so wide.
