FOX MK3 Swinger Review

A swinger hangs from its own arm under the alarm, so it shows a run as the line tightens and a drop-back as it falls slack, and the Fox MK3 Swinger is a very tidy example. It has a light-reactive acrylic head with a widened front end, a fixed line gate system and a 50g sliding weight on a matt black anodised arm.

So, what makes it stand out? The head has a Betalight slot for night fishing and rubber shock absorbers beneath it, and the arm pivots from a streamlined Micron attachment tab that keeps everything neat under the alarm.

Singles come in red, orange, green, blue, black and purple, and it's also sold in sets for three or four rods.

Value for money 8.5/10

How well is it built?

The MK3 has a matt black anodised coating on both the arm and the sliding weight, which looks smart and should cope well with being packed away damp after a night on the bank.

The head is light-reactive acrylic, with rubber pads on the bottom to cushion it against knocks, which matters on something that swings up towards the rod on every take.

The arm is a simple wire with a hooped end that drops into a streamlined Micron attachment tab, so it sits low and tidy under a Fox Micron alarm. There's very little to go wrong, and the fixed line gate system has no moving parts to wear out.

To be fair, it's a plain swinger, with no lit head and no spring tension unit like the Fox MK2 Illuminated Swinger. For a straightforward swinger, though, I think the build is excellent and well worth its 8.5.

Sensitivity & Visibility

How well does it show a bite? A swinger lifts on a run and drops on a drop-back, and because the arm pivots from the alarm rather than hanging on a cord, it shouldn't sway about in a crosswind.

The 50g sliding weight is what makes the MK3 so adaptable, as it lets you adjust the tension on the line.

Slide the weight towards the pivot for a light setting on short-range or slack-line work, or out towards the head for more tension, which keeps a tighter line at range and makes drop-backs far clearer. That one adjustment covers pretty much every swim you're likely to fish.

Visibility is strong too. The widened front end gives you a bigger face to look at, the light-reactive acrylic catches the light at dawn and dusk, and a Betalight in the slot keeps the head in sight after dark.

For me, that's everything you want from a swinger, and I think the 9.0 is deserved.

Ease of Use

Setting up should be quick. The attachment tab goes under the alarm, the hooped end of the arm drops into it, and the fixed line gate takes the line without any clip to adjust.

After that, it's just a case of sliding the weight along the arm until the head hangs where you want it.

Is there a catch? The fixed gate can't be tuned for grip, so you can't set how easily the line pulls out on the strike, which the adjustable clip on the Fox Micro Swinger lets you do.

The tabs are also made for Micron alarms, so if you use another make, check the fit before you buy.

Neither point will bother most carp anglers, and once it's on the alarm there's nothing else to fiddle with. Overall, it's a simple swinger to set up and live with, and I'd say the 8.5 fits.

Is it good value for money?

It's a mid-priced swinger, and for that you get an anodised arm and weight, a properly visible head and a sliding weight that copes with short and long range alike. That's a lot of indicator, and it should last for years with a little care.

If you want a matching setup, the three-rod and four-rod presentation sets are the easy route, and a case is sold separately if you want somewhere safe to keep them between sessions. Singles let you build up a set one colour at a time.

Overall, I'd recommend the MK3 Swinger to carp anglers who fish at a mix of ranges and want one swinger that shows runs and drop-backs clearly, by day or by night with a Betalight fitted.

If you mostly fish short range on small waters, the Fox Micro Swinger is the more compact choice.
