Scoring Criteria for All Trolleys & Barrows
Every fishing trolley or barrow we review is tested using four clear and consistent categories. These cover not just how a barrow looks or reads on the spec sheet, but how it performs once it’s loaded up, pushed across a muddy track, and folded down at the end of a long session.
We score each product in the following areas:

Here’s what we assess in each category:
Build Quality & Materials
This section focuses on how well the barrow is made, because even the cleverest design isn’t worth much if it folds under pressure.
We examine:
Frame construction (steel, aluminium, box-section tubing etc.)
Welds and fixings (are they clean and secure or patchy and flimsy?)
Tyres and axle durability (pneumatic vs solid, axle brackets, puncture resistance)
Folding mechanisms and joints (how they feel under repeated use)
We also evaluate resistance to rust, whether the load platform flexes, and how the finish holds up to knocks and wet conditions. If a barrow develops play in the handles or the joints start to loosen after a few sessions, it loses points fast.
And crucially, this is where portability is assessed, how easily it folds, how small it packs, and whether it’ll fit in an average hatchback without a wrestling match.
Manoeuvrability
This is where real-world use becomes obvious. A barrow might look great in the garage, but if it handles like a pig when fully loaded, it’s not doing its job.
We test:
Balance and steering (particularly between single- and twin-wheel setups)
Control and effort needed when fully loaded
Grip and ergonomics of the handles
Stability on slopes, rough banks, and uneven ground
Some barrows are clearly made for smooth gravel paths, while others handle churned-up clay or steep swims without issue. We push them across real terrain with typical gear weight to find out how they cope.
A well-balanced barrow should feel intuitive and easy to guide, not like you’re wrestling a wheelbarrow full of concrete.
Storage & Capacity
How much gear can it carry, and how intelligently does it hold it?
We assess:
Base platform size and structure
Extendable side bars, front loading trays or support bars
Integrated storage bags, strap systems, bucket holders
How secure gear feels in transit
We also factor in modularity, can parts be removed or upgraded? Does it adapt to longer sessions with extra kit or break down for lighter trips? This is where versatile designs that balance bulk with organisation score well.
You don’t need the biggest barrow, you need one that carries your gear well and doesn’t leave your bait bucket rolling down a hill.
Value For Money
This is where we bring everything together and compare what you’re actually getting for the price.
We don’t just look at RRP, we weigh performance, durability, features, and what’s included in the box. If a budget barrow performs like a session-hauler but costs under £100, it’ll score highly.
Likewise, a £300 barrow that ships without straps or starts rusting by autumn won’t get an easy ride here.
We also match the barrow to its likely user. Some anglers will benefit most from a compact, boot-friendly barrow for day trips, others need a high-capacity workhorse for week-long sessions.
A good score here means it performs well for its purpose, not just in general.
