Feature | What This Means |
---|---|
Magnofuge Control System | An intelligent braking system that automatically adjusts magnetic resistance during your cast. It allows maximum casting distance while preventing line tangles by responding to the spool’s speed in real-time. |
6 Bearings (5 CRBB) | Contains 6 ball bearings, with 5 being Corrosion Resistant Ball Bearings (CRBB). This means smoother operation and enhanced durability, especially important for saltwater fishing. |
5.8:1 Gear Ratio | For every full turn of the handle, the spool rotates 5.8 times. This provides a swift line recovery of 71cm per handle turn, ideal for both casting and retrieving. |
One-Piece Duraluminium Frame | Constructed from a single piece of durable aluminium alloy, providing excellent rigidity and strength while keeping the reel lightweight and corrosion-resistant. |
Infinite Anti-Reverse | Prevents the handle from spinning backwards, giving you better hook-setting power and more control during the fight. |
Five Point Support System | The spool is supported at five different points with low frame crossbars, ensuring perfect alignment and smooth operation even under heavy loads. |
High Grade Brass Drive Gear & Stainless Steel Pinion | Premium quality gears that provide smooth operation and excellent durability. The brass and stainless steel combination offers optimal wear resistance and strength. |
Star Drag System | A smooth and powerful drag system with up to 11kg of stopping power, allowing precise control when fighting larger fish. |
Line Capacity | Can hold 300 metres of 0.35mm line, providing plenty of capacity for long-distance casting and deep water fishing. |
Weight | 346 grams (12.2 oz), offering a good balance between durability and comfort during extended fishing sessions. |
The Daiwa 7HT Mag Multiplier Reel is a high-performance fishing reel designed for shore and boat anglers seeking exceptional casting control and distance.
It features a sophisticated magnetic braking system that automatically adjusts during the cast to provide optimal brake control, allowing the spool to reach maximum speed at the beginning of the cast and then fine-tuning the magnetic resistance in perfect synchrony with the spool’s speed, ensuring smooth and controlled casting performance.
Here’s how the reel performed in testing and/or from experience and feedback from other anglers.Â
When we assess the build quality of a fishing reel, we test and review the materials used in manufacturing the reel and how it all comes together in the finished product.
This part of the review is fairly self-explanatory and focuses on how well the reel casts and how smooth the retrieve is.
Distance isn't a factor in this assessment whereas accuracy and efficiency is.
On top of the actual, physical performance of the reel we also look at the number and type of ball bearings, the spool, line lay and the gear ratio in comparison to its required use.
When reviewing the drag system on a fishing reel we are testing how smooth the drag is and how convenient it is to use.
There is no bias as to whether a reel has a front or rear drag system, it is solely judged on how smooth it can take out line relative to the amount of pressure that is being applied.
Self-explanatory in terms of an assessment but yet an important part of the review process. This is because it creates more of a level playing field.
Of course, the more expensive a reel is the more quality components it will have and as such will generally score higher.
Having value for money as a criterion allows us to recognise good-performing reels at bargain prices.
Out of the box, the build quality of the Daiwa 7HT Mag immediately impresses with its rigid one-piece duraluminium frame and precision engineering. The reel’s construction focuses on durability where it matters most, incorporating high-grade brass drive gears and stainless steel pinion gears for smooth operation.
The lightweight anodised aluminium spool, combined with five CRBB bearings and one standard bearing, creates an incredibly smooth rotation that’s essential for getting distance on the cast. While the standard handle is relatively small, anglers we speak to often opt to upgrade to power handles for improved cranking power, particularly when dealing with larger fish.
In performance testing, the 7HT Mag is truly a fantastic reel for both predator and sea fishing. The Magnofuge control system is something I adore, allowing the spool to reach maximum speed at the cast’s beginning before automatically adjusting the magnetic resistance as the spool speed decreases.
The 5.8:1 gear ratio provides swift line recovery at 71cm per turn, while the star drag system, though limited to 11kg maximum drag, proves more than sufficient for its intended purpose.
A minor downside is that while this reel excels in clean ground fishing scenarios, it’s not designed for rough ground fishing or targeting species like conger eels, as the internal mechanisms are optimised for smooth performance rather than raw power.
While the price point isn’t cheap, you get what you pay for with this reel, it’s an investment in quality that, when properly maintained, will provide years of reliable service and hopefully plenty of fish.

There are four key attributes that form the basis of our reviews on fishing reels. These include the following:
Build Quality: – When we assess the build quality of a fishing reel, we test and review the materials used in manufacturing the reel and how it all comes together in the finished product.
Cast & Retrieve: – This part of the review is fairly self-explanatory and focuses on how well the reel casts and smooth the retrieve is. Distance isn’t a factor in this assessment whereas accuracy and efficiency is.
Drag System: – When reviewing the drag system on a fishing reel we are testing how smooth the drag is and how convenient it is to use. There is no bias as to whether a reel has a front or rear drag system, it is solely judged on how smooth it can take out line relative to the amount of pressure that it is being applied.
Value for Money: – Again, this is self-explanatory in terms of an assessment but yet an important part of the review process. Having value for money as a criterion allows us to judge how well a reel performs vs its price point and in turn allows us to recognise good-performing reels at bargain prices.
