Penn Fierce Thermo Suit Fiery Red/Ink Review
Pier fishing on a winter night is a hard way to stay warm, with spray, wind and cold coming at you from every side. The Penn Fierce Thermo Suit Fiery Red/Ink is a two-piece suit built for boat, pier and bank fishing in windy, wet and cold conditions, and it keeps the spec refreshingly straightforward.
Its 100% polyester pongee outer has a PVC coating with an 8,000mm waterproof figure, and the inside combines a microfleece lining with 160gsm poly-fill padding. Add a detachable hood, fleece-lined pockets and long leg zips, and you've got a practical suit at a sensible price.
Is it a premium suit? No, but for sea anglers on a budget I think it's a solid, honest buy.
How well is it built?
The outer is 100% polyester pongee, a light, smooth plain-weave fabric, with a PVC coating to make it waterproof.
PVC is a tough coating that wipes down easily, which is handy on a suit that'll get bait, salt and slime on it, but the build is simpler than a premium suit such as the Westin W6 Winter Suit Ink Black, with its 600D Oxford reinforcement.
The details are practical, and they're the sort of things you'll use on every trip. There's a two-way front zip, a chest pocket with a water-repellent zip, two lined zipped pockets and large fleece-lined front pockets with front zips.
The salopettes have elasticated, adjustable braces, and the long leg zips use gussets and adjustable Velcro straps.
To be fair, it's a basic build, and that shows in where it sits on price. For a suit that'll spend its winters on piers and boats, getting soaked in spray, though, I think it's well made enough.
Weather Protection
An 8,000mm waterproof figure sits in the middle ground for a thermal suit.
It should cope with steady rain and spray on a pier or boat, which covers most winter sea sessions, while a 20,000mm suit such as the Westin W6 Winter Suit Ink Black is built for prolonged heavy rain and long spells on soaked seats.
The detachable hood adds cover when the wind picks up, and you can take it off on calmer days. The adjustable cuffs have ribbed inner cuffs to stop rain and cold air running up your arms when you cast. The chest pocket's water-repellent zip helps keep a phone drier too.
What about breathability? If you walk a long way to a rock mark, the Westin W6 lets up to 10,000 grams of moisture per square metre escape, which helps on the walk.
For static pier and boat fishing, that matters far less, and I think the Penn's weather protection is sound for the money.
Comfort & Fit Rating
A microfleece lining with 160gsm poly-fill padding does the warming, and that's a sensible middle weight for winter pier and boat fishing that should keep the bulk down when you're casting. Poly-fill traps warm air in its fibres, and microfleece feels soft against your clothes.
For bitter, sub-zero nights, the Westin W6 Winter Suit Ink Black has 200gsm of SORONA Aura padding in its jacket body.
The fit is easy to tailor. Elasticated adjustable braces set the height of the salopettes, and the long leg zips with gussets and Velcro straps make it easier to pull the suit on over boots or wellies.
The large fleece-lined front pockets are welcome when your hands are cold from baiting up or untangling a rig in the dark.
Sizes run M, L, XL, XXL and XXXL, so smaller anglers have less choice, but XXXL at the top end covers bigger builds. Overall, I think it's comfortable enough, if a little basic, and that's fair for the price.
Is it good value for money?
Value is where the Fierce Thermo Suit makes its case. It's one of the cheaper thermal suits you can buy, and you still get an 8,000mm waterproof figure, 160gsm padding, a microfleece lining and a detachable hood.
That's a fair amount of suit for the money, especially if you only fish the odd winter session or want a first suit before spending big.
What you give up is the tougher fabric and higher spec of a premium suit, and you'll feel that most in heavy rain.
The Westin W6 Winter Suit Ink Black is in a different league for rain, wind and breathability, and the Fox Rage Winter Suit has thumb-hole cuffs and a cut shaped for casting.
Overall, I'd recommend the Fierce Thermo Suit to pier and boat anglers on a budget, to newcomers heading out for their first winter sea sessions and to anyone who wants a warm, waterproof spare suit to keep in the car for when the weather turns.
