How well is it built?

The R3+ feels properly built the moment you take it out of its case. Nash have gone with a compact, no-nonsense body that sits low on the buzzer bar and doesn't wobble or shift once it's locked down.

The rubberised snag ears are a nice touch. They unscrew completely for transport, and the rubber finish means your rod blank stays mark-free even when things get lively during a take.

The gasket-sealed case is genuinely watertight, not just "splash resistant" like some cheaper options claim. Leave these out in a sustained downpour overnight and they'll still fire up perfectly in the morning without any condensation issues.

The CR2 battery is the one gripe. It's compact and keeps the alarm head small, but CR2s aren't something you'll find at your local petrol station when you're running low on a Sunday session. Carrying spares is a must.

Nash's build quality at this level is consistent and reliable, and the R3+ doesn't cut corners where it matters. The 2-year extended warranty when you register the serial code adds confidence too. For an 8.5 out of 10 on build quality, it's well earned.

How good is bite detection?

This is where the R3+ really separates itself from the pack. Nash's patented Intelligent Speed Sensing system doesn't just react to line movement.

It analyses the speed of that movement, which means wind, undertow, and drifting weed get filtered out before they ever trigger a false bleep.

Two modes give you flexibility depending on conditions. Standard mode handles most situations perfectly well, while high sensitivity mode picks up the kind of tentative takes you get on pressured waters where fish are mouthing baits rather than bolting with them.

Then there's the roller wheel sensing option for those days when bites are incredibly slow and subtle. It's essentially a dual detection system in one alarm, which is something you don't see at every price point.

On the bank, the difference is noticeable immediately. Drop these on a windy day next to alarms relying purely on roller wheel detection and you'll hear the R3+ staying quiet while others are bleeping away at every gust. That's the whole point of the system and it delivers.

What are the features like?

The feature list on the R3+ punches well above what you'd expect at this price bracket. Five selectable LED colours via push button means you're not locked into buying specific colour variants, which saves hassle and money if you want to change things up.

The MMCX connection for Nash's Night Glo Bobbins and Swing Arms is a genuinely useful addition. When the alarm triggers, your indicators pulse with light too.

It's one of those features that sounds gimmicky until you're fishing in the dark and you can instantly see which rod is away without fumbling for a headtorch.

The receiver is excellent. Over 400 metres of tested range puts it among the best at this level, and the ability to pair 4 alarms individually plus a fifth Buddy Channel for up to 32 alarms makes it brilliant for group sessions or social events.

Five tone settings and four volume levels with a one-touch mute round out a package that covers every practical scenario on the bank. The receiver replicates the exact tone and LED colour from each alarm head, so there's no guessing which rod has gone.

Scoring 9 out of 10 for features feels right. The only thing missing compared to the flagship R4 is the additional programmability, but for most anglers this covers everything.

Is it good value for money?

The R3+ sits in an interesting spot in Nash's lineup. It's positioned below the Siren R4 but shares much of the same core technology, particularly the Intelligent Speed Sensing system that's been the backbone of Nash's detection approach for years.

As a set, you're paying a premium compared to budget options, but the dual detection system alone justifies the step up. If you've ever been driven mad by false bleeps on a windy lake, you'll understand why that's worth paying for.

The CR2 batteries are a running cost worth factoring in. They're not expensive individually, but they add up over a season compared to alarms running on standard AAAs. It's a small thing but it's fair to mention.

For what you get though, the R3+ represents solid mid-range value. You're getting Nash's best detection technology, a receiver with genuine range, Night Glo compatibility, and build quality that'll last season after season.
