Product Information

The Trakker NXG Scout Rucksack is a mobile carp-fishing rucksack for anglers moving from swim to swim with organised tackle. Its small footprint and large storage capacity suit anglers who need to move quickly and efficiently on the bank.

A top pocket contains a removable EVA rig tray with a magnetic corner that secures rig components. The large zipped front pocket takes tackle boxes and accessories, while zipped internal and side pockets sit alongside reinforced open side pockets.

Side elastic and webbing loops, plus six elasticated bankstick holders, provide places for bankware.

Adjustable-height padded shoulder straps, top tension buckles and padded lumbar support form the carrying system. The padded back cushion has a central breather section for airflow and reduced heat.

Heavy-duty lifting handles, strong zips, hard-wearing N-Dura polyester fabric and a waterproof base complete the build. At 45 x 42 x 26.5 cm, it has an approximate 45-litre capacity and weighs 2.2 kg.

Trakker NXG Scout Rucksack Review

The Trakker NXG Scout is aimed squarely at carp anglers who'd rather pick up and move than sit behind the same pair of rods all day. It's a 45-litre rucksack in a fairly compact 45 x 42 x 26.5cm body, and at 2.2kg it isn't a heavy bag before you start loading it.

So, what makes it a swim-hopper's pack? The top pocket holds a removable EVA rig tray with a magnetic corner, there are six elasticated bankstick holders down the sides, and the carry system has adjustable-height padded straps, tension buckles and a padded lumbar section.

For me, it's one of the more sensibly laid out mid-priced rucksacks you can buy for short sessions and day trips.

How well is it built?

The body is N-Dura polyester, a hard-wearing fabric that's shared with the dearer NXG Deluxe, and it's paired with strong zips and heavy-duty lifting handles.

The base is waterproof too, which matters more than people think when you set a rucksack down on a wet bank or the groundsheet of a bivvy.

The open side pockets are reinforced, and that's a sensible touch because those are the bits that take a battering from bankstick points and buzzer bars going in and out. The zipped pockets are generously sized, and the plain green finish is tidy without any fuss.

To be fair, nothing about the build is exotic. It's a polyester rucksack without the heavier 900D fabric of the Nash Scope OPS Recon or the twin-direction zips of the NXG Deluxe, and that's why it scores 8.0 rather than higher.

For a mid-priced bag that's going to be thrown in the car and carried round the lake, though, I think it's well made where it counts.

Storage & Organisation

Forty-five litres is a useful amount of room in a pack this size, and the layout is where the Scout earns its 8.5.

The large zipped front pocket takes terminal tackle cases and accessories, the side and internal pockets are zipped, and the reinforced open side pockets give you somewhere to drop the things you reach for all the time.

The rig tray is the standout. Its magnetic corner keeps hooks and other small steel rig components from sliding about, so you can tie or rebait on the tray and lift the whole thing out when you need the space.

Down the sides, six elasticated bankstick holders plus elastic and webbing loops take your bankware, which leaves the main compartment free for food, bait and spare kit.

Is it as organised as a dedicated workstation pack? Not quite, as the Nash Scope OPS Recon turns its back panel into a work surface. For a rucksack of this size, though, I'd say the storage is very well thought out.

Comfort & Fit Rating

Comfort is a strong point on paper. The padded shoulder straps adjust for height, so you can set the pack to sit right on your back rather than hang low, and the tension buckles at the top pull the load tight into your shoulders.

That's what stops a rucksack swinging about when you're climbing a steep bank or squeezing through a gap in the reeds.

There's padded lumbar support at the base of the back, and the padded back cushion has a central breather section to let air through.

It won't stop you getting warm on a long walk in summer, but it should cut down on that sweaty-back feeling after a trek round the lake, and the light empty weight helps as well.

If you regularly carry heavy loads a long way, the NXG Deluxe's waist belt spreads the weight better. For the walk from the car park to the swim and a few moves during the day, though, the Scout should be very comfortable, and the 8.5 reflects that.

Is it good value for money?

Is it worth the money? I think so, as it's a mid-priced rucksack that costs a fair bit less than the Trakker NXG Deluxe, and you still get the magnetic rig tray, the breathable padded back and a proper bankstick system.

At a similar price, the Korda Compac Rucksack 45 offers the same capacity with chest straps and side pockets sized for Korda's EVA pouches, so it comes down to which layout suits you.

The Scout's rig tray and adjustable-height straps are the reasons I'd lean towards it if you move swims a lot.

Overall, I'd recommend the NXG Scout to carp anglers who fish short sessions, day trips and quick overnighters and like to stay mobile, especially on venues where you might move two or three times in a day.

If you fish longer sessions from a barrow, the NXG Deluxe's bigger capacity makes more sense.

Pros

  • Removable EVA rig tray with a magnetic corner for small components
  • Six elasticated bankstick holders plus elastic and webbing side loops
  • Adjustable-height padded straps with tension buckles to pull it tight
  • Padded lumbar support and a breather back panel for airflow
  • 45 litres of storage in a compact, easy-to-carry footprint

Cons

  • Polyester build isn't as heavy-duty as dearer 900D rucksacks
  • Too small to carry everything for longer sessions in one load
