5 Things To Know

  1. The SmartLite hanger senses its own movement and tells a forward run from a drop-back.
  2. A drop-back gives a two-tone sound and a flashing latch LED, repeated through the Rx-D v2 receiver.
  3. Its integral multi-coloured LED matches the alarm's chosen colour and runs without any extra batteries.
  4. The single set comes with the hanger, Smart Arm, a Txi-D v2 wireform and 3g, 5g and 10g C-Slot weights.
  5. Only Delkim's Txi-D v2 and EV-R bite alarms are compatible, so check yours before you buy.

Delkim SmartLite Indication Set Single Review

Drop-backs are the bites that are easiest to miss, and the Delkim SmartLite Indication Set is built to flag them for you. Its intelligent hanger senses whether it's moving forward or backwards, and a drop-back gets its own two-tone sound and a flashing latch LED, both repeated on the Rx-D v2 receiver.

The single set includes the illuminating hanger, the Smart Arm, a wireform fitting for the Txi-D v2 and 3g, 5g and 10g C-Slot drag weights. The hanger's multi-coloured LED takes the colour you've set on the alarm and needs no extra batteries.

The one catch is that it only works with Delkim's Txi-D v2 and EV-R alarms, so it's a system to buy into rather than a simple add-on.

How well is it built?

The SmartLite is a properly engineered bit of kit. The hanger has a clear body around an integral multi-coloured LED, a magnetic line clip built into the head and a super slim CatFlex 2 cable to the alarm.

It draws its power through that cable, so there's nothing to charge and no battery to forget.

The Smart Arm is the second key part. It connects to the supplied wireform and holds the hanger steady, stopping it moving sideways, and you can take the hanger off and use it free hanging if you'd rather.

The slotted C-Slot drag weights let you add weight in small steps, with heavier 20g, 30g and 60g options sold separately.

For me, it's about as complete as an indication set gets, with every part made to work together and with the alarm. I think the 9.5 is well earned.

Sensitivity & Visibility

So, how does the drop-back detection work? The hanger senses its own movement and whether it's going forward or backwards. A run sounds as normal, while a drop-back is signalled differently, with two tones and the latch LED flashing, so you know straight away what's happening.

You can also switch drop-back detection off when conditions call for it.

The Smart Arm plays its part too. By stopping sideways movement, it should cut false signals in a crosswind, and it's designed to get the most from the drop-back function.

The hanger alone is 8g, which suits slack lines at short range, and the drag weights add tension for longer range, right out to extreme distances with the heavier options.

After dark, the clear body glows in the alarm's colour and copies its flashing, latching and Night Marking. Is there a clearer way to see a take at night? Not really, and the 9.5 reflects it.

Ease of Use

Setting up is straightforward on a compatible alarm. The wireform fits the Txi-D v2, the Smart Arm connects to it, and the cable plugs into the alarm.

From there, the magnetic line clip holds the line, and the LED colour follows whatever you've chosen on the alarm, so there's no colour to match by hand.

It drops half a point because there's a little more to think about than with a plain hanger. You decide whether to run drop-back detection or switch it off, and you need to pick the right weight for the range and conditions.

None of that is hard, but it's an extra step each time you set up in a new swim.

Is it worth the learning curve? I think so, because once it's set, it watches for drop-backs so you don't have to. The 8.5 is fair.

Is it good value for money?

This is the SmartLite's weak spot. It's one of the dearest single indicators you can buy, and it's made for just two alarms, the Txi-D v2 and the EV-R, so if you run anything else it isn't an option at all.

A presentation set of three is available for a full setup, but that's a big spend on top of the alarms.

What you get for the money is a proper piece of electronics, with drop-back recognition, automatic colour matching and a stabilising arm in one set.

Next to the Delkim NiteLite Set Illuminating Hanger V2, it adds the drop-back sensing and colour matching, while the NiteLite works with every Delkim alarm.

Overall, I'd recommend the SmartLite to carp anglers who already own Txi-D v2 or EV-R alarms and fish drop-back rigs, long range or overnight. For anyone on other Delkim alarms, the NiteLite V2 is the more sensible choice.

Pros

  • Senses drop-backs and gives them their own two-tone alarm
  • Multi-coloured LED matches the alarm colour with no batteries
  • Smart Arm stops sideways movement in the wind
  • 3g, 5g and 10g C-Slot drag weights included
  • Drop-back alerts repeat through the Rx-D v2 receiver

Cons

  • Only works with Delkim Txi-D v2 and EV-R alarms
  • One of the dearest single indicators you can buy
