5 Things To Know

  1. The Drennan Match Catapults are for loose feeding a wide range of baits on the pole line or within waggler range.
  2. Pole Line models have a small mesh pouch and plastic pull cord, and the medium elastic feeds up to 16 metres.
  3. Top-exit, tangle-free elastic lets each catapult fire from either side and any angle.
  4. Every model has a rubberised grip for wet or cold hands and comes with spare elastic.
  5. Trade-off to note: Plain moulded frame lacks the swivels of dearer match pults.

Drennan Match Catapults Review

If you're putting together a first match set-up, the Drennan Match Catapults are about the simplest way to cover both the pole line and the waggler. The range has four models, Pole Line and Waggler Range, each in light or medium elastic, with a mesh pouch on every one and spare elastic in every packet.

So, the key feature is the elastic, which exits from the top of the frame to keep it tangle free and lets you fire from either side and at any angle, so your eyes can stay on the float. There's a rubberised grip for wet or cold hands, and the price is about as low as a decent match pult gets.

Build quality 8.0/10
Accuracy & Range 8.0/10
Ease of Use 8.5/10
Value for money 9.0/10

How well is it built?

These are simple catapults, and that's no bad thing. The frame is a moulded Y with a rubberised grip, and the elastic exits through the top of the frame, which keeps it tidy and stops it tangling round the forks. The aqua frame is easy to find on a cluttered side tray, too.

The pouches differ by model. The Waggler Range versions use a mesh pouch with a nylon pull cord, while the Pole Line versions have a small mesh pouch and a plastic pull cord, and both pouch types are made to be strong and durable.

Each catapult also includes spare elastic, so a snapped elastic won't end your session.

Is it as refined as the Preston Dura Slip with its PTFE bushes? No, and the 8.0 reflects a plain but sensible build. For a budget match pult, though, it's well put together.

Accuracy & Range

Which model do you need? On the pole line, the light elastic is for accurate short-range feeding, while the medium feeds up to 16 metres.

The Waggler Range light elastic is for accurate feeding at medium range, and the medium version reaches farther still, so between them they cover most match situations short of very long range.

The mesh pouch should hold small baits like maggots, casters and pellets neatly, so they leave together rather than dribbling out to one side. Being able to fire from any angle also helps you keep the feed going while you watch the float.

To be fair, there's no long-range option in the range, so a pellet waggler line well out will need something like the Guru Incredible 'Pult. For close and medium-range feeding, though, the 8.0 is a fair score.

Ease of Use

The top-exit elastic is the big plus for ease of use. Because it's tangle free and can be fired from either side and any angle, you can feed while holding the pole or keeping an eye on the waggler without twisting round to line it up.

The pull cords are made for a firm hold even with wet or cold hands, and the rubberised grip does the same for the frame. Having spare elastic in the packet also means you can re-elastic it on the bank rather than packing up.

There's no tension to set and no fittings to adjust, so a junior should be feeding accurately after a few practice shots.

For me, that's exactly what a beginner or a pleasure angler wants from a match pult. It's simple to pick up and use, and I think the 8.5 is deserved.

Is it good value for money?

What does it cost to get started? Very little, as these are among the cheapest match catapults you'll find, a little less than the Drennan Pole Line Pellet Pult.

For that you get a rubberised grip, top-exit tangle-free elastic and spare elastic included, which is pretty much everything you need.

The four models also mean you only buy what you need. A pole angler can stick with a Pole Line version, while a waggler angler picks the Waggler Range model, and you can add the other later. The spare elastic in the packet also saves you buying the first replacement.

I'd recommend the Drennan Match Catapults to beginners, juniors and pleasure anglers who loose feed on the pole line or the waggler at short to medium range. If you want swivels and a tougher polymer pouch for pellets, the Drennan Pole Line Pellet Pult is worth the small step up.

Pros

  • Top-exit elastic is tangle free and fires from any angle
  • Spare elastic is included with every catapult in the range
  • Four models cover pole line and waggler at two strengths
  • Rubberised grip and pull cord hold well in wet hands
  • Among the cheapest match catapults, with a sound, simple build

Cons

  • No long-range model for a distant pellet waggler line
  • Plain moulded frame lacks the swivels of dearer match pults
