Best Fishing Braid

Spools of fishing braid from Daiwa, Skeater, Berkley, Spiderwire, Fox Rage and Thinking Anglers

Braid has changed lure, pike and sea fishing, because a line with no stretch on a thin diameter casts further and tells you exactly what's happening at the other end.

These are the best fishing braids for lure, pike, sea and carp fishing, from smooth eight-strand lure braids to tough predator and sea braids, and scored on strength, casting, presentation and value.

Let's get straight into it.

How We Test Fishing Braid

Every braid here is scored on the same four things, so a budget four-strand and a premium eight-strand can be compared on equal terms. Strength and abrasion covers the breaking strain for the diameter, knot strength and how well the line stands up to rough ground, while casting and handling is about how smoothly it leaves the spool and how it behaves on the reel. Presentation weighs the stretch, buoyancy and visibility, and value for money then sets all of that against the price. The overall score is the average of the four.

A braid for flicking small lures has a very different job from one for pike or the sea, so we name a winner for each discipline rather than one best overall. Predator braids are only half the set-up, as pike need a wire trace on every cast.

For carp, the short carp section summarises two sinking mainlines, and our best carp fishing line guide covers carp mainlines in full. For spodding and marker work, see our best spod braid guide.

Daiwa J Braid X8 150m Dark Green

Best for Lure Fishing

Daiwa J Braid X8 150m Dark Green

How It Scored

Strength & Abrasion 9.0

High strength for the diameter, 9lb to 58lb.

Casting & Handling 9.0

Round, smooth eight-strand weave for long, quiet casts.

Presentation 8.5

Muted Dark Green, thin and ultra low stretch.

Value For Money 8.0

Mid-priced, with only 150m on the spool.

Daiwa's J-Braid X8 weaves eight strands of Japanese yarn into a thin, ultra low stretch line that's very strong for its size. The Dark Green version comes on 150m spools.

Strains run from 9lb to 58lb, with diameters from 0.06mm to 0.28mm, so one braid covers light perch lures through to heavy jigs. A highly circular, smooth weave should add distance and keep it quiet through the guides.

Lure anglers after perch, zander, chub and bass will get the most from it, and pike anglers can use the heavier strains with a wire trace. Next to the Spiderwire Stealth Smooth 8, it gives up the longer spool, but it starts far lighter, at 9lb, for perch and light lure work.

To be fair, 150m is half what some braids give you, and rough ground still needs a leader. For lure anglers who want one thin, strong braid for most jobs, though, I think it's the best lure braid here.

Best forLure anglers who want one thin, strong braid for most species
I likeEight strands of Japanese yarn, strong for a tiny diameter
Avoid ifYou want a full 300m spool, as the Spiderwire Stealth Smooth 8 comes on one.

Pros

  • ✓Eight-strand Japanese yarn gives high strength for a small diameter
  • ✓Wide spread of strains, from 9lb up to 58lb
  • ✓Highly circular, smooth profile made for long and quiet casting
  • ✓Ultra low stretch passes every knock and tap back from the lure
  • ✓Muted Dark Green colour suits most freshwater lure fishing

Cons

  • ✕Only 150m on the spool, so less line than 300m braids
  • ✕Built for strength more than abrasion, so rough ground needs a leader

Spiderwire Stealth Smooth 8 Braid 300M

Quiet Eight-Carrier Cast

Spiderwire Stealth Smooth 8 Braid 300M

How It Scored

Strength & Abrasion 8.5

Tight weave, polymer coating, 22lb to 83lb.

Casting & Handling 9.0

Soft, limp, round and coated for quiet casts.

Presentation 8.5

Round, quiet line with a choice of colours.

Value For Money 8.0

A 300m spool, but a bigger spend in one go.

Made in the USA, Spiderwire's Stealth Smooth 8 is an eight-carrier PE braid with a tight weave, a round profile and a thin microcrystalline polymer coating. You get 300m on the spool.

It's soft and limp for smooth, quiet casting, and knots clinch securely. Strains run from 22lb to 83lb, the tight weave gives high abrasion resistance, and there are five single colours, from Hi-Vis Yellow and Code Red to Moss Green and Camo.

For me, it suits pike anglers on lures with a wire trace and sea anglers who want a quiet, tough braid. Next to the Daiwa J-Braid X8, it's the longer spool and goes heavier, and next to the Sufix 832, it trades the GORE fibre for a soft, limp feel.

To be fair, 22lb is the lightest strain, so it's too heavy for finesse perch lures. For pike, sea and heavier lure fishing, though, I think it's a superb, quiet-casting braid.

Best forPike and sea anglers wanting a quiet, tough braid on 300m
I likeSoft, limp and quiet, with five single colours
Avoid ifYou want a fine braid for finesse lures, as the Berkley Forward goes down to 0.08mm.

Pros

  • ✓Tightly woven eight-carrier PE braid with a round, smooth profile
  • ✓Thin microcrystalline polymer coating keeps the diameter fine and durable
  • ✓Soft and limp, so it should cast smoothly and quietly
  • ✓Five single colours, from Hi-Vis Yellow to low-vis Moss Green
  • ✓300m spools in strains from 22lb up to 83lb

Cons

  • ✕Lightest strain is 22lb, so it's too heavy for finesse lures
  • ✕A bigger outlay in one go than a 150m spool

Sufix 832 Advanced Superline

GORE Fibre Construction

Sufix 832 Advanced Superline

How It Scored

Strength & Abrasion 9.0

Seven HMPE fibres plus a tough GORE fibre.

Casting & Handling 8.5

GORE fibre aids distance, built for bigger lures.

Presentation 8.5

Thin and calm, but Neon Lime needs a leader.

Value For Money 8.0

Mid-priced, but only 120m per spool.

Sufix 832 mixes seven HMPE fibres with one GORE Performance Fibre in an eight-fibre braid, with 32 weaves per inch. The Neon Lime version comes on 120m spools.

Diameters run from 0.10mm at 12.98lb to 0.18mm at 26.4lb. The GORE fibre improves abrasion resistance, casting length and accuracy, R8 Precision Braiding keeps it round and consistent, and the high pitch count makes the braid water-repellent.

It's made for casting, trolling and jigging with medium to large lures, so it suits pike, zander and bass anglers on rough or rocky ground, with a wire trace for pike. Next to the Spiderwire Stealth Smooth 8, it's the tougher build on a shorter spool, while the Wychwood Agitator AX8 is the quieter colour and a simpler braid.

To be fair, Neon Lime is bright and 120m is a short spool. For lure anglers who fish rough, rocky water and want a thin braid with real toughness, though, I think it's a superb choice.

Best forLure anglers fishing rough, rocky water with medium to large lures
I likeA GORE Performance Fibre woven in for abrasion resistance
Avoid ifYou want a low-vis colour, as the Wychwood Agitator AX8 comes in dark moss green.

Pros

  • ✓Seven HMPE fibres plus one GORE fibre for strength and toughness
  • ✓GORE Performance Fibre improves abrasion resistance, casting length and accuracy
  • ✓Tight 32 weaves per inch with R8 Precision Braiding
  • ✓Water-repellent braid shouldn't soak up water over a long session
  • ✓Thin diameters for the strain, from 0.10mm to 0.18mm

Cons

  • ✕Only 120m per spool, shorter than the usual 150m
  • ✕Neon Lime is highly visible, so it always needs a leader

Wychwood Agitator Ax8 Line

Neutral-Density Braid

Wychwood Agitator Ax8 Line

How It Scored

Strength & Abrasion 8.5

Coated eight-strand PE, 16.5lb at 0.12mm.

Casting & Handling 8.5

Silk-like coating cuts friction through the guides.

Presentation 8.0

Neutral density and low-vis moss green.

Value For Money 8.5

One of the cheaper eight-strand braids.

Wychwood's Agitator AX8 is a neutral-density braided mainline for lure and bait fishing, so it sits between floating and sinking braids. This 150m spool of coated, perfectly round eight-strand PE is 16.5lb at 0.12mm.

A silk-like coating cuts friction for casting, raises linear strength and can lift knot strength by up to 20%. It stays quiet through the guides, and the dark moss green is a low-visibility colour.

Perch, zander and chub anglers who want one affordable braid for lures and light bait work are the ones it suits. Next to the Sufix 832, it's the subtler colour, and next to the Berkley Forward, it's the all-rounder rather than the finesse specialist.

To be fair, there's only the one 16.5lb strain on this spool, which is too light for pike on big lures. For light lure fishing on a budget, though, I think it's very good value.

Best forPerch, zander and chub anglers wanting an affordable all-round braid
I likeNeutral density with a silk-like, low-friction coating
Avoid ifYou need pike-strength braid, as the Fox Rage Predator Elite comes in 40lb.

Pros

  • ✓Neutral density sits between floating and sinking braids
  • ✓Silk-like coating cuts friction for smooth, quiet casting
  • ✓Coating can raise knot strength by up to 20%
  • ✓Thin 0.12mm diameter for a 16.5lb breaking strain
  • ✓Low-visibility dark moss green blends in on most waters

Cons

  • ✕Only one strain on this spool, 16.5lb at 0.12mm
  • ✕Too light for pike on big lures or snaggy water

Berkley Forward Braid

Finesse Perch and Zander

Berkley Forward Braid

How It Scored

Strength & Abrasion 8.0

Fine finesse strains, not built for rough ground.

Casting & Handling 8.5

Smooth coating for distance and accuracy.

Presentation 8.5

Thin, fast-sinking and Low-Vis Green for natural lures.

Value For Money 7.5

One of the dearer 150m lure braids.

Berkley made the Forward Braid for finesse spinning for perch and zander, giving direct contact with the lure. The proprietary construction is all about sensitivity, so the slightest bite should register at the rod tip.

Spools hold 150m of Low-Vis Green, from 0.08mm at 3.9kg to 0.26mm at 15.4kg. A smooth coating helps distance and accuracy, the thin profile lets lures move naturally, and the smaller diameters sink faster.

For me, it suits perch and zander anglers who spend most of their time on drop shot, small jigs and soft lures. Next to the Wychwood Agitator AX8, it's the specialist rather than the all-rounder, while the Skeater Zero-X Floating is a much heavier pike braid for float and lure work.

To be fair, it's one of the dearer lure braids, and it isn't built around abrasion resistance for rough ground. For finesse perch and zander fishing, though, I think it's a superb, sensitive braid.

Best forPerch and zander anglers fishing drop shot, jigs and small soft lures
I likeSensitive construction that shows even slight bites at the tip
Avoid ifYou want more abrasion resistance, as the Sufix 832 adds a GORE fibre for it.

Pros

  • ✓Proprietary construction is built for high sensitivity to slight bites
  • ✓Smooth coating helps casting distance and accuracy with light lures
  • ✓Fine diameters from 0.08mm, with the smaller sizes sinking faster
  • ✓Thin profile lets small lures move naturally in the water
  • ✓Low-Vis Green colour suits clear canals, rivers and lakes

Cons

  • ✕One of the dearer lure braids for a 150m spool
  • ✕Built for finesse, not for abrasion over rough ground

Skeater Zero-X 8Braid Mg Floating Line 300m

Best for Pike and Predators

Skeater Zero-X 8Braid Mg Floating Line 300m

How It Scored

Strength & Abrasion 8.5

Round eight-strand weave, with strains from 30lb to 70lb.

Casting & Handling 8.5

Zero stretch and a smooth, round eight-strand profile.

Presentation 8.5

Floats clear of snags for float and drift work.

Value For Money 8.5

Mid-priced, with four strengths and 300m per spool.

Skeater's Zero-X Floating is a zero-stretch, eight-strand braid with a round profile, built for pike, zander and perch. Because it floats, the line stays up and clear of snags in weedy or snaggy water.

Every spool holds 300m, in 30lb at 0.25mm, 40lb at 0.30mm, 60lb at 0.35mm or 70lb at 0.40mm. The weave is made to resist abrasion without losing casting distance, and the finish is a low-key dark green.

Its natural jobs are float fishing deadbaits, drifting baits and casting lures over weed for pike. The Berkley Forward Braid is a far finer line for finesse perch and zander, while the Fox Rage Predator Elite is the tougher braid but only comes in 40lb and 60lb.

To be fair, a floating braid isn't the line for ledgering, and every pike rig still needs a wire trace. For float, drift and lure fishing for pike, though, I think it's the best pike braid here.

Best forPike anglers float fishing, drifting baits or casting lures over weed
I likeFour strengths from 30lb to 70lb, all on 300m spools
Avoid ifYou want a braid for ledgering, as the Skeater Zero-X Sinking stays down.

Pros

  • ✓Floating design keeps the line off the bottom and clear of snags
  • ✓Zero stretch shows takes on floats and lures straight away
  • ✓Round eight-strand weave for smooth casting and abrasion resistance
  • ✓Four strengths from 30lb at 0.25mm to 70lb at 0.40mm
  • ✓300m on a recycled spool in recyclable cardboard packaging

Cons

  • ✕A floating line isn't suited to ledgering or bottom fishing
  • ✕The 60lb and 70lb versions are thick for casting light lures

Fox Rage Predator Elite Braid

Abrasion-Resistant Pike Braid

Fox Rage Predator Elite Braid

How It Scored

Strength & Abrasion 9.0

Micro-bonded weave and a slightly larger diameter.

Casting & Handling 8.5

Round eight strands, though the line runs thicker.

Presentation 8.5

Floating dark green braid suits float and drift work.

Value For Money 7.5

One of the dearer braids, with two strengths only.

Fox Rage built the Predator Elite for pike and predator fishing, pairing a micro-bonded weave with a slightly larger diameter for extra abrasion resistance. It's an eight-strand, round-profile floating braid in dark green.

Two strengths are on offer, 40lb (18kg) at 0.34mm and 60lb (27kg) at 0.41mm, each on a 300m spool. A 150m marker on every spool lets you split it evenly across two reels, which suits anglers running a pair of pike rods.

On snaggy, weedy or rocky pike waters, that extra toughness pays off. Next to the Skeater Zero-X Floating, it's the harder-wearing line, though the Skeater gives you four strengths, and the Skeater Zero-X Sinking is the one for ledgering, since the Fox Rage braid floats.

To be fair, it's one of the dearer braids, and the thicker diameter may cost a little casting distance. For pike anglers who put toughness first, though, I think it's a superb choice.

Best forPike anglers on snaggy, weedy or rocky waters who want toughness
I likeMicro-bonded weave and slightly larger diameter for abrasion resistance
Avoid ifYou want lighter strains, as the Skeater Zero-X Floating starts at 30lb.

Pros

  • ✓Micro-bonded weave and larger diameter improve abrasion resistance
  • ✓Round eight-strand profile for smooth casting and handling
  • ✓Floating braid suits float fishing and drifting for pike
  • ✓150m marker lets one spool load two reels equally
  • ✓40lb and 60lb strains cover lures and deadbaits for pike

Cons

  • ✕Dearer than most predator braids, which holds back its value
  • ✕Only two strengths, so nothing light for perch or zander

Skeater Zero-X 8Braid Mg Sinking Line 300m

Bottom-Contact Predator Braid

Skeater Zero-X 8Braid Mg Sinking Line 300m

How It Scored

Strength & Abrasion 8.5

Eight-strand weave for snaggy, rocky or weedy ground.

Casting & Handling 8.5

Round, smooth profile built for long-range casting.

Presentation 8.5

PTFE core keeps it down, zero stretch keeps contact.

Value For Money 7.5

One of the dearer braids, with five lighter strains.

The Zero-X Sinking is Skeater's bottom-contact predator braid, made for ledgering, bottom rigs and long-range work. Its round, eight-strand weave has zero stretch, giving instant contact with the rig.

An integrated PTFE core keeps it sinking once the coating wears, which is the clever part. Five strains run from 15lb at 0.19mm to 30lb at 0.29mm, all on 300m spools in dark green. The weave is built for abrasion resistance on snaggy, rocky or weedy ground.

Zander, perch and pike anglers who ledger or fish bottom rigs at range are its natural buyers. The Fox Rage Predator Elite floats and goes heavier at 40lb and 60lb for big pike, while the Berkley Flex Braid is a tough four-strand line built for the sea instead.

To be fair, it's one of the dearer predator braids, and it tops out at 30lb. For bottom fishing for predators, though, I think it's a smart, well-thought-out line.

Best forPredator anglers ledgering or fishing bottom rigs at long range
I likeA PTFE core that keeps it sinking after the coating wears
Avoid ifYou want heavier 40lb or 60lb strains, as the Fox Rage Predator Elite has both.

Pros

  • ✓Integrated PTFE core keeps it sinking after the coating wears
  • ✓Zero stretch gives instant contact with bottom rigs at range
  • ✓Round eight-strand weave resists abrasion on snaggy, rocky ground
  • ✓Five strains from 15lb at 0.19mm to 30lb at 0.29mm
  • ✓Dark green finish keeps it low-key in the water

Cons

  • ✕One of the dearer predator braids, which holds back its value
  • ✕Tops out at 30lb, so it's light for big pike in snags

Berkley Flex Braid 275m

Best for Sea Fishing

Berkley Flex Braid 275m

How It Scored

Strength & Abrasion 8.5

Thermally fused PE, tough over rocks and mussels.

Casting & Handling 8.5

Slightly stiff for distance, easy to knot, no wind knots.

Presentation 8.0

Four strands are less round than eight-strand braid.

Value For Money 8.5

Affordable 275m spool with a wide range of strains.

Built for sea fishing, the Berkley Flex Braid is a thermally fused, four-strand PE line. It's extra tough and abrasion resistant, so it should break less often around rocks, mussels and heavy weed.

The 275m spool comes in moss green, with diameters from 0.12mm to 0.33mm and breaking strains from 5.1kg to 23.1kg. A slightly stiff build helps it cast easier and farther, and it's easy to knot and resists wind knots. Low stretch gives sensitive bite detection too.

Shore and boat anglers fishing rough, snaggy ground will get the most from it. The Skeater Zero-X Sinking is a rounder eight-strand braid, but it's a predator line, while the Leeda Super Braid is the budget pick for deep water and long range.

To be fair, four strands and a stiffer build won't run as smoothly as a round eight-strand braid. For sea anglers over rough ground, though, I think it's the best sea braid here.

Best forShore and boat anglers fishing over rocks, mussels and heavy weed
I likeAn extra tough, abrasion-resistant build that's easy to knot
Avoid ifYou want a round eight-strand braid, as the Skeater Zero-X Sinking is one.

Pros

  • ✓Tough, abrasion-resistant build for rocks, mussels and heavy weed
  • ✓Slightly stiff construction is built for easier, farther casting
  • ✓Easy to knot and built to avoid wind knots
  • ✓Low stretch gives sensitive bite detection at range
  • ✓Diameters from 0.12mm to 0.33mm and strains from 5.1kg to 23.1kg

Cons

  • ✕Four-strand line isn't as round or smooth as eight-strand braid
  • ✕Slightly stiff build makes it less supple for light presentations

Leeda Super Braid

Best Budget

Leeda Super Braid

How It Scored

Strength & Abrasion 8.0

Strong knots, with 20lb at just 0.18mm.

Casting & Handling 7.5

Round and thin for range, but a basic braid.

Presentation 7.5

Near-zero stretch, but general-purpose rather than specialist.

Value For Money 9.0

One of the cheapest braids, on two spool sizes.

With near-zero stretch and an ultra-thin diameter for its strain, Leeda's Super Braid is a round-profile braided mainline. It's made for deep-water fishing, long-range casting and anywhere strength and durability count. It's a no-frills line that covers the basics well.

The 20lb version measures 0.18mm on a 300-yard (274m) spool, and the 40lb comes on 150 yards (137m). Knot performance is strong, and the 150-yard spool also covers pike and lure fishing. Near-zero stretch means bites show quickly, even in deep water.

Anglers on a tight budget, or trying braid for the first time, have a lot to like in it. The Berkley Flex Braid is tougher over rocks and mussels, while the Thinking Anglers SBX is a specialist sinking mainline built for carp.

To be fair, it's a simple, general-purpose braid rather than a floating or sinking specialist. For strong, thin, low-stretch braid on a budget, though, I think it's the best budget braid here.

Best forBudget-minded anglers fishing deep water, at long range, or for pike
I likeNear-zero stretch and a thin 0.18mm 20lb line
Avoid ifYou need extra abrasion resistance, as the Berkley Flex Braid is built for rocks.

Pros

  • ✓Near-zero stretch helps you stay in contact and spot bites
  • ✓Ultra-thin diameter for its strain, with 20lb at 0.18mm
  • ✓Strong knot performance adds to its strength and durability
  • ✓Round profile suits long-range casting and deep-water fishing
  • ✓One of the cheapest braids, on 150-yard or 300-yard spools

Cons

  • ✕General-purpose braid rather than a floating or sinking specialist line
  • ✕Less suited to rough, rocky ground than the tougher Berkley Flex Braid

Thinking Anglers SBX Sinking Braided Mainline 40lb

Best for Carp

Thinking Anglers SBX Sinking Braided Mainline 40lb

How It Scored

Strength & Abrasion 9.0

Tightly woven, abrasion resistant, 25lb or 40lb.

Casting & Handling 8.5

Round and smooth, made to cut wind knots.

Presentation 9.0

Fast-sinking fibres with a green and black camo.

Value For Money 8.0

Not cheap, but the 600m spool splits across reels.

SBX from Thinking Anglers is a sinking braided carp mainline, made from a tightly woven, round blend of fast-sinking fibres. It comes in 25lb at 0.40mm and 40lb at 0.48mm, on 300m or 600m spools.

Zero stretch gives a direct feel and clear bite detection, and the weave gives high abrasion resistance. A green base with black sections breaks up its outline, and the 600m spool has removable markers at 200m, 300m and 400m for loading more than one reel.

Carp anglers on weedy, snaggy or demanding venues who fish at range are the ones it suits. Next to the Leeda Super Braid, a thin sea and deep-water braid, it's a heavier sinking line made for carp, while the RidgeMonkey Descend is lighter and finer. Our best carp fishing line guide covers carp mainlines in full.

To be fair, you'll need leaders, and some waters ban braided mainline. For carp at range over weed and gravel, though, I think it's the pick for carp, and the camo finish seals it.

Best forCarp anglers fishing weedy or demanding venues at range
I likeFast-sinking camo braid with markers on the 600m spool
Avoid ifYou want a lighter, finer braid, as the RidgeMonkey Descend comes in 20lb at 0.28mm.

Pros

  • ✓Extremely robust, tightly woven build with high abrasion resistance
  • ✓Fast-sinking fibres settle the braid quickly onto the lake bed
  • ✓Green and black camo pattern blends in on most waters
  • ✓Zero stretch gives direct contact and clear bite indication
  • ✓600m spool has removable markers for splitting across reels

Cons

  • ✕Needs a leader, and some waters ban braided mainline
  • ✕Zero stretch needs care to avoid hook pulls near the net

Ridgemonkey Descend Sinking Braid

Budget Sinking Braid

Ridgemonkey Descend Sinking Braid

How It Scored

Strength & Abrasion 8.5

Highly abrasion resistant, but only 20lb or 30lb.

Casting & Handling 8.5

Fine, round profile with virtually zero stretch.

Presentation 8.5

Super-fast sink, but plain weed green, not camo.

Value For Money 8.3

Bulk 1000m spool loads several reels.

RidgeMonkey's Descend is a sinking carp braid in weed green, and its round, low-diameter profile gets it down very quickly. It comes in 20lb at 0.28mm and 30lb at 0.35mm.

Both strains come on 300m or 1000m spools, so one bulk spool can load several rods. Virtually zero stretch keeps a direct line to the rig, and high abrasion resistance helps it cope with rough ground and tough conditions.

Anyone fishing open or weedy waters at range who wants a quick-sinking braid that keeps the line pinned down will get on with it. Next to the Thinking Anglers SBX, it's the finer and lighter line, and it trades the camo finish for a plain weed green.

To be fair, there's no heavy strain for really snaggy swims, and you'll still need a leader. For filling three reels with a fast-sinking braid that won't break the bank, though, I think it's very good value.

Best forCarp anglers filling several reels with a quick-sinking braid
I likeFast sink from a round, low-diameter profile
Avoid ifYou need heavier braid for snags, as the Thinking Anglers SBX comes in 40lb.

Pros

  • ✓Round, low-diameter profile makes it sink super-fast
  • ✓Virtually zero stretch for direct contact with the rig

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best fishing braid?

It depends on the fishing. For lure fishing, the Daiwa J-Braid X8 is our pick at 8.6. For pike and predators it's the Skeater Zero-X 8Braid Floating at 8.5, for sea fishing the Berkley Flex Braid at 8.4, and for carp the Thinking Anglers SBX at 8.6. On a budget, the Leeda Super Braid is our Best Budget pick.

Is 8-strand braid better than 4-strand?

Eight-strand braid is usually rounder and smoother, so it casts more quietly and further. Four-strand braid is often a little rougher but can be very tough, which suits rocky sea marks.

Do I need a leader with braid?

Usually, yes. A fluorocarbon or mono leader is less visible and more abrasion resistant at the business end, and for pike you need a wire trace on every cast, because they bite through braid.

What breaking strain braid for lure fishing?

Around 8lb to 15lb braid suits light lure fishing for perch and zander, 20lb to 30lb covers general pike and sea lure fishing, and heavier braid suits big lures and rough ground.

What is the best budget fishing braid?

The Leeda Super Braid is our Best Budget pick at 8.0. It's an ultra-thin, near-zero-stretch braid with a round profile on 150 and 300 yard spools.
