Penn Battle IV Spin Reel Review
Penn built the Battle IV as a saltwater reel, but I would argue it is one of the best pike lure reels you can buy for the money. The reasoning is simple. A reel that is built to survive salt spray, sand and wet boat decks is going to shrug off a winter of chucking lures on a cold, wet pike bank without complaint.
How well is it built?
Penn build the body and sideplate from metal rather than graphite, and you feel that heft as soon as you lift it out of the box.
The extra weight is what keeps the gears perfectly lined up when a big pike is thumping away on the end, so the reel never feels like it is flexing or straining.
Penn's Hydro Armor seals protect the important parts from water getting in. It does not mean you can drop it in a puddle and forget about it, but it is a real help against rain and spray, and the black and gold finish is as tough as it looks.
How well does it cast and retrieve?
The gears are cut by CNC machine, which in plain English means they mesh very precisely.
On the bank that translates into a smooth, even retrieve, and that matters on a lure reel because you are winding all day and you want to feel every knock on the lure rather than grinding from the reel.
The range runs from 1000 up to 10000. For most pike lure work the 3000 or 4000 is the size to look at, and the 4000 picks up 37 inches of line per turn, quick enough to keep a jerkbait or spinner working properly.
Line lay is neat enough for braid, which is what most of us use for pike lures these days.
How useful is the drag system?
The drag uses Penn's HT-100 carbon fibre washers, the same material they fit in their more expensive reels.
It comes on smoothly from the first click and stays consistent through a long run, which is what you need when a double-figure pike makes that last powerful dash as it sees the net.
A jerky drag is how hooks get thrown at the last moment, and this one is as smooth as you will find at the price.
Is it good value for money?
At around a hundred pounds, the Battle IV sits in the middle of the pike reel market, and for a full metal reel with sealed parts and a carbon drag it is very good value.
It is a reel that will do years of lure fishing, handle the odd trip to the coast for bass or mackerel, and still feel solid at the end of it. For me it is one of the easiest recommendations among comparable products.
