What Does This Mean?

When rating the build quality of a rod, consideration has been given to the basic components.

These include the materials used in the blank, handle, reel seat and line guides.

We also take into account any additional features that make life on the bank easier for anglers.

What Does This Mean?

How a rod casts is one of the key fundamentals that determine a great rod from a mediocre one.

Easy, frictionless casting that provides accuracy is all rated in this category.

What Does This Mean?

The ability to play fish effectively is an important feature of any fishing rod.

Fishing is a sport, and as part of this sport, feeling the pulls, lunges and the fight of a fish is an exhilarating feeling that adds to the overall experience and enjoyment of angling.

As such, this is all taken into account when rating fishing rods.

Value For Money

What Does This Mean?

How much any fishing rod costs is always going to be a key factor in an angler’s final choice.

A rod can have all the bells and whistles under the sun but if you have to re-mortgage your house to purchase it then all of a sudden it isn’t the best choice for some.

When rating how much value for money a rod brings, consideration has been given to how the rod performs in all the other categories vs its price point.

The Korum Barbel rod range offers anglers a versatile, durable, and budget-friendly option that performs admirably across various barbel fishing scenarios

The Rods Features

The Korum Barbel rods were in development for eight years, suggesting a significant investment in their design and performance.

These rods feature several upgrades from the previous models, both in aesthetics and functionality.

Visually, they sport a custom-like appearance with Korum’s bespoke font, (based on one of their own graphic designer’s handwriting), and durable white tips.

The most notable improvements however are in the rod’s action and power, which are optimised for casting large feeders and managing long rigs when targeting sizeable fish.

In terms of construction, Korum has made some notable changes. The new rods now feature a full real cork handle, which is solid and slim, paired with a DPS-style reel seat. This replaces the previous KB rub reel seat design and in my opinion, is quite a considerable improvement.

An anti-frap tip guide has been added, which helps reduce line tangling during casts that can be catastrophic when using heavy feeders. (trust me I know first-hand!)

The range includes four rods: a 13-foot 2.5 lb version for larger rivers, two 12-foot options at 1.75 lb and 2 lb, and an 11-foot 1.75 lb rod for smaller waters.

This versatility fully demonstrates Korum’s commitment to producing a Barbel rod that covers every eventuality an angler may need.

How It Performs

After spending some time with the Korum Barbel rods, I’ve got to say I’m quite impressed. I’ve used them in various conditions, from the wide, fast-flowing stretches of the Trent to smaller, more intimate rivers, and they’ve held up brilliantly.

The rod’s action is powerful yet progressive, providing the confidence to cast heavy feeders accurately and far when needed.

What’s really stood out is how versatile these rods are. I’ve found myself opting for the 12ft 1.75lb version for most of my barbel fishing, but it’s also proven it’s worth surface fishing on commercial carp venues, handling both scenarios with ease.

The Tips On The Korum Barbel Rods
The tips on the different models

Durability-wise, these rods have taken a fair bit of rough handling without complaint. I’ve dragged them through brambles, and accidentally knocked them on rocks, and they’re still going strong.

While they might not have the prestige of some higher-end brands, I’ve found the performance to be consistently reliable.

The build quality is solid, and the cork handle feels comfortable in the hand. It casts well and has a lovely play action to it allowing you to lean into larger fish if needed on the fight.

Overall, considering the price point, I feel like I’m getting a lot of rod for my money with this barbel rod.

They might not be the fanciest rods on the market, but for a dependable workhorse that can handle most barbel fishing situations, these rods have certainly earned their place in my setup on the river and as such rightly have a place in our guide on top barbel rods as the best budget option.
