Catfish Pro Top Cat Power Rod 4.5lb Review

Not every catfish swim has room for a 12ft rod, which is where the Catfish Pro Top Cat Power comes in. It's a 10ft 6in specialist with a 4.5lb+ test curve, made for tight swims and for stopping big cats at shorter range before they reach a snag.

Underneath, it shares the Top Cat recipe, with a high-modulus carbon blank, a powerful through action, a heavy-duty metal reel seat and a Fuji tip ring. The big differences are a full Duplon handle and that shorter length, so is it the right rod for you?

If your swims are cramped, overgrown or full of snags, I think it's well worth a look.

How well is it built?

Stopping big fish at close range is what this rod is about, and its high-modulus carbon blank is a good base for that job.

It's paired with a heavy-duty metal reel seat sized for the large fixed spool reels catfishing calls for, so it's built to stay put when a heavy fish is pulling hard.

The tip ring is a Fuji, which makes sense, as that's where line friction and wear are highest. The other rings aren't Fuji, and that's one of the ways this entry-level model keeps its price sensible, as the step up in the Catfish Pro range gets Fuji rings all the way through.

The handle is full Duplon from top to bottom, and it's a hard-wearing material that copes well with rod rests, holdalls and wet banks. To be fair, it isn't a premium build, but it's a tough, practical one, and I think 8.5 is about right.

Power & Action

So, what does the 4.5lb+ rating mean? The plus is there because the blank has reserve power beyond its nominal test curve, so it's built to cast heavy, bulky baits and to keep pulling when a big cat is heading for cover.

The through action works alongside that power, and under pressure the blank should bend right down into the butt, absorbing the lunges of a big fish at close range rather than bouncing the hook out.

That's especially useful on a short rod, as there's less length to cushion a sudden run.

What you give up is casting reach, as a 10ft 6in rod won't put a bait as far as the 12ft Catfish Pro Top Cat. For long-range work on big pits the longer rod makes more sense, but for close and medium-range fishing I think the power and action are very well matched.

Handling

In a tight swim, under trees or on a steep, overgrown river bank, a 10ft 6in rod is far easier to cast, to hold and to manoeuvre when you're landing a fish.

It also gives you more direct control at close quarters, which matters when a cat is trying to bury itself in a snag a few metres out.

The full Duplon handle gives a secure, comfortable grip even when it's wet, and the shorter length should make the whole rod feel less unwieldy than a 12ft catfish rod.

That's pretty much the whole point of the Top Cat Power, and it's why it earns its place next to the longer Top Cat.

For anglers fishing cramped or snaggy swims, it's a very manageable rod. I think the 8.5 reflects how practical it is, with only the lack of reach on open water holding it back.

Is it good value for money?

On value, it's hard to fault. It's a mid-priced catfish rod from a brand that focuses entirely on the species, and it gives you a high-modulus blank, a metal reel seat, a Fuji tip ring and a full Duplon handle for the money.

It's the entry point to the Catfish Pro line-up, so you don't get Fuji rings throughout, but you don't need them to land big cats.

Next to the Wychwood Agitator CR-D in its 10ft 4.5lb form it's a close call, and the choice comes down to whether you prefer this rod's metal reel seat and Fuji tip or the Agitator's braid-friendly SiC guides.

I'd recommend the Top Cat Power to UK catfish anglers fishing tight swims, snaggy rivers and smaller pits, and to newer catfish anglers who want a capable specialist rod without paying for top-end fittings.

Pros

  • Handy 10ft 6in length for tight, snaggy and overgrown swims
  • 4.5lb+ test curve with reserve power for heavy baits
  • Through action should absorb lunges from big fish at close range
  • Full Duplon handle gives a secure grip when wet
  • Heavy-duty metal reel seat and a Fuji tip ring

Cons

  • Shorter length gives up casting reach on big, open waters
  • Entry-level fittings, with a Fuji tip ring rather than Fuji throughout

Features and Specifications

Feature What this means
Length: 10ft 6in Shorter than the 12ft Top Cat model, which makes it easier to use in tighter swims with restricted casting room. The extra leverage you get from length matters less when you need to muscle a big cat away from snags at close quarters.
Test Curve: 4.5lb+ This is a serious amount of power for a rod. The manufacturer adds a "+" qualifier, meaning it's built to handle loads beyond a straightforward 4.5lb rating. That makes it capable of stopping large catfish and lobbing heavy, bulky baits without the rod feeling overworked.
Blank: High Modulus Carbon High modulus carbon is a stiffer grade of carbon fibre, which helps pack a lot of power into the blank without the rod becoming unnecessarily heavy. Combined with a powerful through action, the rod bends right down into the butt when under load, helping absorb the lunges of a big fish rather than pulling the hook out.
Handle: Full Duplon Foam Duplon is a dense closed-cell foam that gives a secure, comfortable grip even when wet. A full-length duplon handle means both your casting hand and your lower hand are covered, which is useful when you are applying serious pressure to a strong fish.
Reel Seat: Heavy Duty Metal A metal reel seat is far more robust than a standard graphite or plastic fitting, and it is sized to accommodate large fixed spool reels, which are commonly used in catfishing because of their high line capacity. You won't be struggling to fit a big reel on here.
Tip Ring: Fuji Fuji is a well-regarded Japanese component brand. Having a Fuji tip ring at the most vulnerable point of the rod, where friction and wear are greatest, is a sensible touch. The remaining rings are non-Fuji, which is one of the key differences from the higher-spec Pursuader model.
Guide Setup: Multiple Rings The rod has plenty of rings spaced to follow the through action of the blank. More rings spread the load of a running fish more evenly along the rod, which helps protect the blank and gives you better feel and control during the fight.
Range Position: Entry-Level Top Cat This sits below the Pursuader in the Catfish Pro lineup. The step up to the Pursuader gets you Fuji rings throughout and a Fuji reel seat. If you are new to catfishing or want a capable rod without paying top-range money, this is the starting point in the range.
Brand: Catfish Pro Catfish Pro is a UK specialist brand founded in 2004 and based in Romsey, Hampshire. They focus entirely on catfishing, so the tackle they produce is built with the specific demands of the species in mind rather than being adapted from general carp gear.

Frequently Asked Questions

What test curve does the Catfish Pro Top Cat Power Rod have?

4.5lb+, meaning it's built to handle loads beyond a straightforward 4.5lb rating. That makes it capable of stopping large catfish and casting heavy, bulky baits without the rod feeling overworked. The "+" qualifier indicates the blank has extra power reserve beyond the nominal test curve.

What length is the Catfish Pro Top Cat Power Rod?

10ft 6in. This is shorter than the 12ft Top Cat model, which makes it easier to use in tighter swims with restricted casting room. The shorter length also gives you more direct control when you need to muscle a big cat away from snags at close quarters.

What reel works best with the Catfish Pro Top Cat Power Rod?

A large fixed spool reel in the 6000-10000 size range, loaded with 30-50lb braid or heavy mono. The heavy duty metal reel seat is sized to accommodate big fixed spool reels, which are commonly used in catfishing because of their high line capacity. The 4.5lb+ test curve needs a reel with enough capacity and drag power to match.

Does the Catfish Pro Top Cat Power Rod have Fuji rings?

Fuji tip ring only, not Fuji rings throughout. The tip ring is Fuji because that's where friction and wear are greatest, but the remaining rings are non-Fuji. The step up to the Pursuader model gets you Fuji rings throughout and a Fuji reel seat.

Is the Catfish Pro Top Cat Power Rod suitable for pike fishing?

Yes, particularly for dead-baiting at range or fishing big livebaits on large stillwaters. The 4.5lb+ test curve gives you the power to cast heavy pike baits and handle big fish, while the 10ft 6in length suits boat work or tighter swims. It's overpowered for most lure work, but capable for trolling or fishing static deadbaits.
