Feature | What This Means |
---|---|
10+1 Ball Bearings | The reel contains 11 bearings in total (10 standard + 1 roller bearing) which create an exceptionally smooth rotation when casting and retrieving. More bearings typically mean smoother operation. |
Low-profile bail arm | A streamlined bail arm design that reduces weight and the chance of line tangles while maintaining strength and reliability. |
High-grip spool band | A rubber strip around the spool that allows you to tie braided line directly to the spool without it slipping, eliminating the need for backing line or tape. |
Carbon-reinforced rotor | The rotor (the part that wraps line around the spool) is strengthened with carbon fibre, making it extremely rigid and resistant to flexing even under heavy load. |
Magnesium Body | The reel’s main body is constructed from magnesium alloy, offering superior strength while being significantly lighter than traditional materials like aluminium. |
CNC aluminium drive gear | The main gear is precision-machined from aluminium using computer-controlled (CNC) processes, ensuring exact tolerances for smoother operation and longer life. |
Carbon bearing cover | A lightweight carbon fibre cover that protects the bearings while minimising overall reel weight. |
Cork/EVA handle | The reel handle combines cork and EVA materials to provide excellent grip and control even in wet conditions. |
Front drag | The drag system (which controls line tension) is located at the front of the spool, allowing for quick adjustments while fighting fish. |
Anti-reverse | A mechanism that prevents the handle from spinning backwards, ensuring solid hook sets and better control when fighting fish. |
Size | Weight | Drag | Ball Bearing | Gear Ratio | Line Capacity |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1500 | 220g | Front | 10+1BB | 6.2:1 | 150m/0.10mm |
2500 | 232g | Front | 10+1BB | 5.1:1 | 150m/0.16mm |
The Fox Rage TR Reel is the highest-quality reel Fox Rage has ever created, available in two sizes: 1500 and 2500.
Here’s how the reel performed in testing and/or from experience and feedback from other anglers.Â
When we assess the build quality of a fishing reel, we test and review the materials used in manufacturing the reel and how it all comes together in the finished product.
This part of the review is fairly self-explanatory and focuses on how well the reel casts and how smooth the retrieve is.
Distance isn't a factor in this assessment whereas accuracy and efficiency is.
On top of the actual, physical performance of the reel we also look at the number and type of ball bearings, the spool, line lay and the gear ratio in comparison to its required use.
When reviewing the drag system on a fishing reel we are testing how smooth the drag is and how convenient it is to use.
There is no bias as to whether a reel has a front or rear drag system, it is solely judged on how smooth it can take out line relative to the amount of pressure that is being applied.
Self-explanatory in terms of an assessment but yet an important part of the review process. This is because it creates more of a level playing field.
Of course, the more expensive a reel is the more quality components it will have and as such will generally score higher.
Having value for money as a criterion allows us to recognise good-performing reels at bargain prices.
The Fox Rage TR Reel series is a relatively new addition to the reputable ‘Rage’ predator range that still comes with the same build quality and engineering precision that has made it so popular.
The lightweight magnesium alloy body provides a robust foundation while keeping the overall weight impressively manageable at 220g for the 1500 size and 232g for the 2500 model. The carbon-reinforced rotor and CNC-machined aluminium drive gear demonstrate Fox’s commitment to durability, while the carbon-bearing cover adds protection without compromising the reel’s lightweight design.
The oversized cork/EVA handle offers a unique-looking yet really comfortable grip in all conditions with the low-profile bail arm ensuring smooth line management without adding unnecessary bulk.
In testing, both TR models delivered outstanding performance across various lure fishing scenarios. The 10+1 ball bearing system provides remarkably smooth operation, which, in my opinion, is a godsend when working lures all day. The 1500 size, with its faster 6.2:1 gear ratio, excels at rapid lure retrieval and reactive techniques, while the 2500 model’s 5.1:1 ratio offers excellent control for more methodical approaches.
The rubber grip band on the spool proves invaluable for braid users, eliminating any concerns about line slip without requiring backing line. The front drag system offers precise control and smooth adjustment, which is very much needed if there are larger fish in the water and you are using light gear.
To top it all off, the price of the Rage TR is in the affordable range making it a great option for both beginners and more experienced anglers looking for reputable quality.

There are four key attributes that form the basis of our reviews on fishing reels. These include the following:
Build Quality: – When we assess the build quality of a fishing reel, we test and review the materials used in manufacturing the reel and how it all comes together in the finished product.
Cast & Retrieve: – This part of the review is fairly self-explanatory and focuses on how well the reel casts and smooth the retrieve is. Distance isn’t a factor in this assessment whereas accuracy and efficiency is.
Drag System: – When reviewing the drag system on a fishing reel we are testing how smooth the drag is and how convenient it is to use. There is no bias as to whether a reel has a front or rear drag system, it is solely judged on how smooth it can take out line relative to the amount of pressure that it is being applied.
Value for Money: – Again, this is self-explanatory in terms of an assessment but yet an important part of the review process. Having value for money as a criterion allows us to judge how well a reel performs vs its price point and in turn allows us to recognise good-performing reels at bargain prices.
