When rating the build quality of a rod, consideration has been given to the basic components.
These include the materials used in the blank, handle, reel seat, and line guides.
We also take into account any additional features that make life on the bank easier for anglers.
How a rod casts is one of the key fundamentals that determine a great rod from a mediocre one.
Easy, frictionless casting that provides accuracy and distance is all rated in this category.
The ability to play fish effectively is an important feature of any fishing rod.
Fishing is a sport, and as part of this sport, feeling the pulls, lunges, and the fight of a fish is an exhilarating experience.
This is all taken into account when rating fishing rods.
How much any fishing rod costs is always a key factor in an angler's final choice.
A rod can have all the bells and whistles under the sun, but if it is unaffordable, it may not be the best choice for some anglers.
This rating considers how the rod performs in all the other categories versus its price point.

Fox has gone with a full Japanese shrink wrap handle, which offers both comfort and durability, even with wet hands or during fast, underarm flicks. It’s slim, balanced and pairs really well with smaller 5000-sized reels. The handle ends in a laser-etched metal butt cap that adds a subtle touch of class without affecting grip.
The 18mm DPS reel seat used here is seriously impressive for a rod in this category. It’s black anodised, feels rock solid when clamping down on the reel foot, and gives the Explorer Ti a premium feel the moment you pick it up.
Unlike many retractables, the reel doesn’t wobble or loosen, even when playing fish aggressively under the tip.
Fox has fitted the Explorer Ti with American Tackle Ti-Forged Air guides, which are not only featherlight, but offer exceptional line flow.
The wider bore and anti-frap tip make it ideal for heavier lines and close-quarters casting, something stalking rods often struggle with.
Constructed from a high modulus 2K carbon blank, the Fox Explorer Ti Rod offers quick recovery and a superior playing action.
This construction ensures that the rod remains lightweight without sacrificing strength or responsiveness.
Despite its compact nature, the Explorer Ti casts incredibly well. On test with the 3lb version, I comfortably flicked single hookbaits 60–70 yards using a 10lb mono setup.
The action is progressive but with a firm recovery, giving you loads of confidence under load. The rod doesn’t feel like it folds or lags behind your cast, a rare thing for this rod type.
Expert Quote
“This is not your average retractable. It behaves like a proper full-size rod but breaks down small enough to go in your boot or on a plane” – Lewis Porter
Playing fish on the Explorer Ti is a dream. You get that soft compression through the tip that cushions lunges at close quarters, but the lower section has real power, especially in the 3.5lb model.
I personally used it to turn a 20lb mirror from a snaggy marginal tree and was genuinely impressed by how it held up under pressure without feeling clunky or stiff.
Heres a video showing the Explorer Ti in action:
The Explorer Ti sits at the premium end of the retractable market, but in my view, it fully justifies the price. The finish, fittings, and feel are all next-level, and it offers performance that makes many 12ft rods blush.
If you want a stalking rod that doesn’t feel like a compromise, this is the one.
Here is how the Fox Explorer Ti compares against other products in its category.
